Best Car Ever

My 2012 Volt has been the most trouble free, economical car I have ever owned. I would encourage everyone to look at and test drive this car. It is a marvel of engineering. It's truly like driving a future car today. It has an incredible range and the novelty of charging it everyday hasn't worn off in the 4 years I've owned this car. It looks great and is a joy to drive, really fun. Update for August 2016: I had the service charging system light come on recently and I couldn't charge the car. Took it in to dealer and they fixed it but said I had to pay (out of warranty) I called Onstar volt advisor and they advocated for me with dealership and apparently my repair was covered under Voltec Warranty. Dealership gave me a refund for the work performed. What other car have you owned where there is a staff of professionals ready to advocate on your behalf with a dealership? Amazing! One additional comment was I had my third oil change done in the 52k miles I've owned the car. Besides new tires, wiper blades and fluid that is all the repairs I have done on the car. This is still the best car I've ever owned. I will be shopping for another one for our family soon.

We just retired. The key to a successful retirement was to control our expenses. I decided to invest in some Green solutions. First we installed a Solar Array on our roof. Then I researched electric Cars. The only one that answered the question "What happens when I run out of Juice?" was the Volt. I paid 20, thousand for a 2012 with 20 thousand miles. It was loaded. I got a Tax credit of $7500. so net out the door was $12,500 not a bad price. WE charge it and it goes, no problems and it is the most dependable car ever. So far it has cost me an additional $O to operate.Update: After three years, It has only gotten better. No maintenance and no problems. Here is the update, " Now that we have driven this car for over 5 years, I can say, Wow, what a Car. Not a single problem or glitch is 5 years??

2012 Volt - Better car than most realize

Update: 20 mos. now and about 25,500 miles on the Volt (total miles on car about 95K). It continues to provide above average daily transportation, but I have started to notice a decline in AER(all electric range). On the 2012 Volt a full charge is 10kWh, but recently I am only getting 8-9 kWh resulting in AER of about 30-32 miles. There are many factors that affect range, but my driving habits are all exactly the same, same tire pressure, same usage of A/C, heat, etc...Overall still impressed and again would definitely recommend the Gen 1 Volt as long as there is a full understanding of what it is......and what it is not. Update: 14 mos. and 17,200 miles on the 2012 Volt and it continues to be a reliable and very thrifty car. I've used 28.3 gals. of gas which is approx. 1000 miles @ 35mpg, all the rest has been on battery power. So few people understand how these cars "work" and that has been a very significant factor in it's demise. As purely an electric car, it has limitations, but at the same time with the gas engine "generator", it has few limitations. Before considering one of these, the first thing to do is to gain a full understanding of what it is, and what it can and can't do? Also, If considering a Gen. 1 Volt (2011-2015) be advised that many changes were made over the 5 years. They all look about the same, but there are several significant differences. Update: 7 months now with the 2012 Volt and very impressed. I changed the tires to Bridgestone Ecopia 422+ and have kept them inflated to 38-40psi., rides and drives much better and AER is improved. Recently I had the best range so far on a full charge, 48.2 miles on 10Kwh. So far 9600 miles driven and just 11.1 gals. of gas used, all the rest has been electric. Overall, just a very good small car that is very affordable in the used market. I would buy again, specifically the first gen Volt, not the newer one. After 29K in 16 months my 2016 Chevy SS needed a break, so I looked for an affordable (about $10K budget) daily driver. A few on my list were: Cruze Eco and diesel, Chevy Sonic hatch, VW Golf TDI (looked for one returned to market after Mfg. TDI buyback) and the Chevy Volt. I drove a Sonic and eliminated it in short order due to excessive vibration. The VW's are commanding more $$ than expected, so I turned to the Cruze and the Volt. After lots of calculating and several test drives I found a '12 Volt with 69K and got it for $10,600. 2 days in, the OnStar, Bluetooth, satellite radio and Nav were all inoperable. Dealer took car back and had the OnStar module replaced, since then all is working fine. Overall I am fairly impressed with the car. 1850 miles so far and only 3.6 gals of gas used, the rest all electric. I had a 240V charger installed at work and use the 120V at home. The car drives very well and in "Sport" mode it has decent acceleration due to the instant electric torque. Of course when you lean on it, the electric range goes down real quick, but it's there if you want or need it. So far all electric range has been between 35-42 miles depending on speed, traffic, etc...May do even better with new LRR tires. In summary, the first gen Volt is a bit better than expected as a daily driver, it's smooth, quiet and now easily affordable.

I test drove the Volt because I wanted to contribute to a reduction in our reliance on oil for 97% of our critical transportation needs. I bought the Volt because I loved everything about the car. The Volt's battery life allows me to complete my 42 mile round-trip commute without using a drop of gasoline. But, I can also take long trips without any "range anxiety." I have driven 6,500 miles, including some interstate trips on which I used a total of 42 gallons of gas. Otherwise, its all electric. Either way, the car is a joy to drive because it is so smooth and fluid -- refined may be a better description.

I leased a 2012 Volt in April of that year and loved it. Once I learned to always drive in “L” gear for maximum regen braking, and “S” drive mode for maximum acceleration at the light the car was so much fun to drive. It was extremely quick and totally quiet. What I like is the acceleration is 100% useable. Since there is no noise, grinding and shifting you can put the pedal to the floor every time you start off without any guilt or spectacle. 90% of my driving is in town and I never have to use gas unless I go on a trip out of town. My only disappointment with that car was that in the third year that I owned it my battery range dropped about 20%. I went from seeing 36 miles after charge in the winter to 30 miles. In the summer it went from 47 to less than 40. Chevy said this was normal, but I can’t believe that since it all happened in the third year. Also in that year I added a level 2 charger at work and started topping the car off both at home in the evening and work in the morning. Turned that car in at end of lease and got a barely used 2014 with every option which I love. It has navigation which the 2012 did not and that is a great feature because of how it integrates with other features. Lots of improvements over the 2012. Now I’m not charging until I drop below 20 mile range and keeping my fingers crossed that I won’t lose driving range in two years.
