The year was 1996. Pleated slacks were in, "Macarena" was the No. 1 song and Independence Day was the big blockbuster. It's also the year the Chevrolet Express debuted. Vehicles typically undergo a full redesign every seven to 10 years, but the Express has stubbornly clung to its original formula — and it shows.

Compared to newer vans, the 2023 Chevrolet Express is well behind the times. It's not as efficient, maneuverable or versatile as its rivals. On the plus side, it's more affordable, and its reliance on muscle over smarts allows it to tow up to 10,000 pounds, a feat matched only by the related GMC Savana. For 2023, the Express loses its diesel engine option but is otherwise unchanged. Again.

If budget and towing are your primary concerns, the Chevy Express could be a good match, but if your requirements for a commercial van stray anywhere beyond those two realms, you'd be better served by one of its few competitors. The Ford Transit, Ram ProMaster and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter are available with tall roof options and come with many more modern features and conveniences.

The 2023 Chevrolet Express is available in Cargo Van and Passenger Van configurations and in standard- and extended-wheelbase styles. If you plan to carry more people and weight, you may want to upgrade from the 2500 series to the 3500 model.

Which Express trim does Edmunds recommend?

The Express Cargo Van is only available in WT trim, but for the Passenger Van, we suggest checking out the top LT trim. It adds some rather basic features that make it feel less like a U-Haul rental, such as carpeting, cloth upholstery, and forward collision and lane departure warning systems.

Defect Description:: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles. Incorrect software in the transmission control module (TCM) may result in harsh shifting, reduced power, unintended deceleration, rear wheel lockup, or cause the vehicle to move in an unintended direction.
Defect Consequence:: Rear wheel lock-up or moving in an unintended direction can increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action:: Dealers will update the transmission control module software calibration, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 9, 2024. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N242471620.

We bought the Chevy van because we wanted a vehicle that could sit 11-12 people, the Dodge Sprinter cost twice as much and doesn't have the towing power. We rented several vans for diferent long distance trips and compared. 2009 Chevrolet Express LS 1500 3dr Van AWD (5.3L 8cyl 4A)

I've been driving several different vans of this model ranging from '06 to '09. The engine has very good power, and the AWD system really helps it grip the road. However, the gas mileage could be better, the best I've ever gotten out of it is 17mpg (on 87 octane gas). I bought this van slightly used for my family of 9. That means that we are tough on a vehicle. Between Hockey practice, Basketball games, park runs and anything else that comes up, we pretty much live in this thing. We now have 413k miles on her. The engine and powertrain have been flawless. I love my 2006 Chevy Express! My only complaint is that I can hardly ever find a parking spot for it. It's very long, and seems much wider than my other cars have ever been. (Suburbans)
