Overview
Buyers looking for a comfortable, well-built luxury SUV can turn to established favorites from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Or they can consider the stylish 2024 Volvo XC60, which offers a bit of modern Scandinavian cool relative to its more serious German counterparts. The XC60 seats five in an interior roomier than most rivals, it offers sophisticated safety features, and is the only model in this group to offer a plug-in hybrid version that can cover 35 miles on electricity. It lacks the Benz's cushy ride comfort or the Audi and BMW's athleticism, but the XC60 has a distinct character of its own.

EPA Estimated Electric Range
The XC60 will automatically switch to gas when the electric battery is low.Electric cars typically experience 1-2% of range loss per year with slightly faster degradation over the first 50,000 miles as the car settles into its long term state, according to Recurrent's study of 15,000 EVs.
Estimated range mapThis map is a visual representation of the possible one-way and round-trips by this vehicle (on a full charge) from the geometric center of Seaboard, North Carolina. The depicted ranges are based on the estimated new vehicle range value provided by the EPA, rounded down to miles for one-way and miles for round-trip. Actual range will vary depending on the condition of this vehicle’s battery pack, how you drive, driving conditions and other factors.
240V Home ChargingEstimated total charging time when using a 240V outlet. This is either a 3-prong or 4-prong outlet used for appliances, for example a clothes dryer.
EV batteries should be kept at 30-80% charged to extend battery life.
8 yrs or 100,000 milesHybrid batteries are federally mandated to carry at least 8 years or 100,000 miles of warranty coverage from the manufacturer. Batteries that lose capacity more rapidly than expected should be eligible for replacement under warranty. Coverage of additional hybrid components beyond the battery itself will vary by automaker.
According to GeoTab’s data, if the observed degradation rates are maintained, the vast majority of batteries will outlast the usable life of the vehicle.

Edmunds spotlight: Plug-in power gives XC60 an edge
Volvo has always cut its own path among European luxury cars. The XC60 is no different, offering a standard gas engine alongside a plug-in hybrid option. Few rivals offer the latter (the Audi Q5 is a notable exception) and it gives the XC60 an edge, although a pricey one that costs more than $11,000 over the base drivetrain. The extra power is enticing, though, and depending on your driving, the premium could pay off. The T8 can also "self-recharge" by using the gas engine to boost battery charge. It's no substitute for plugging in and filling up, but it's a useful feature that can extend electric range. In combined operation, the T8 is rated at 63 miles per gallon equivalent.
Competitors to consider
Buyers have many options for a small luxury SUV, from the agile Audi Q5 and BMW X3 to the stately Mercedes-Benz GLC. The Genesis GV70 offers bold, Bentley-esque style at an un-Bentley price, while the Lexus RX offers timeless elegance and comfort. The Cadillac XT5 flies under the radar but delivers snappy handling and striking design. The only rival to the T8 Recharge is the Audi Q5, although it's rated for less electric range — 23 miles — than the Volvo.
Which XC60 does Edmunds recommend?
If your budget allows, we recommend the XC60 Recharge in Plus trim. The plug-in hybrid is more powerful, and more expensive, than its base four-cylinder counterpart. But if you have a short commute or regular routes that can maximize the Recharge's 35 miles of electric-only range, you could recoup the added expense through reduced fuel consumption. But if the bulk of your driving will dip into the gas side of things, we'd suggest sticking with the base B5 engine with the Plus trim. The latter offers improved cabin treatments and extra driver assistance features.

These Are the Best Luxury SUVs You Can Buy in 2024
Got a taste (and a budget) for the finer things in life? A luxury SUV might be right up your alley, and there are a whole lot to choose from. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of all the best. In this video, Edmunds’ Nick Yekikian tells you all about the best luxury SUVs on sale in 2024 and why we love them.
63 MPGeMPGe is the official metric that the EPA uses to measure the efficiency of alternative-fuel (including electric) vehicles. Just like regular MPG shows how far a car will travel on one gallon of gas, MPGe shows how far a vehicle will drive on 33.7kWh of electricity - the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. Combined MPGe is the combined total of 45% city MPGe + 55% highway MPGe.
The X3 is more performance-oriented than the XC60, with livelier handling and steering that makes it more fun to drive on a twisty road. Power and fuel economy are pretty even, but we give the edge to the Volvo's plusher and roomier interior. The BMW, though, offers a little more headroom for taller passengers and significantly more cargo space.
The Genesis GV70 is a relative newcomer, debuting just two years ago, but it made a memorable first impression with its bold styling and value. The GV70 base trim offers more standard features than the XC60 (larger infotainment display, Android Auto, wireless charging), makes more power from its larger four-cylinder engine, and has more cargo capacity. It may lack some of the Volvo's brand cachet, but it costs less and comes with a more generous warranty. We've picked it as the top small luxury SUV in our rankings.
Last year's full redesign of the Mercedes-Benz GLC returned it to its rightful place near the top of the small luxury SUV class, edged out only by the Genesis GV70 in Edmunds' rankings. Smooth and efficient power, a high-class interior and sophisticated in-car technology make the GLC a tough rival. The Benz offers cushier ride quality but costs more as well.
