Great Car

I have only owned the car for a week so I'm still learning how to operate a high tech hybrid vehicle, I drove a similar size car for five years that rode, felt and sounded like a small car. The Prius drives like an upscale mid-sized sedan. It's quiet, comfortable, handles well, and has gotten over 50 mpg in city and highway driving the first week of operation. Fit and finish is outstanding. According to CR, reliability should be well above average. So far, I'm very satisfied with the car. I was interested in waiting for the new 2010 model but was able to save thousands by purchasing one of the last of the 09s.

Value for Money Finally

We purchased our new Prius in Dec 08 and promptly drove from Florida to CA and back. 5900 miles with no problems and $125 in gas costs for the entire trip. Since then we have put another 17000 miles on it with NO problems mechanical or otherwise. I am looking forward to purchasing another in the not to distant future. Excellent value for money. Gas mileage after the first 6000 miles went from 47 highway and 49 city to 48 highway and 51 around town. Got to love the savings. Cruising speed is comfortably up to 80 interstate with no significant loss of economy. A pleasure passing the clunkers going over the great divide.

I bought an '09 Prius new, with 5 miles on it. I traded it for a newer Prius last week, when it had 203,000 on it. MPG had fallen from 50 to 44 on long trips, it used a quart of oil between changes, and the main battery had never never been replaced - so I thought it was time to change. The bad things you read in other reviews are not necessarily true - I readily changed light bulbs and did other small maintenance following the many YouTube advisory movies out there. We were happy with its cargo capacity - we traveled 300 mi. round trip to build a log cabin while owning this car, and often took it, stuffed with materials for that job. It was not plush, but entirely adequate. You could run at any highway speed you chose, though it'd take you longer to get there than with a 6 or 8 cylinder engine. Mileage did fall in the winters (Pennsylvania), into the low 40's and upper 30s. I ran snow tires on it in the winter as, with the heavy battery near the rear axle, traction in snow with standard tires was not impressive. In 11 years the only major service cost was for a muffler. Reliable, durable, fuel efficient, and with more internal room than you'd think by looking at it from the outside - we loved it. The oil consumption disappointed me - I have run Toyota engines far beyond 200,000 miles without that, but I understand now that their 4 cylinder engines are known for it.

Air conditioning in a hot climate like in Arizona could be a bit more robust. When we bought the car, we took advice of dealer and had leather seats installed which may be more durable and comfortable than the factory seats. Headlights could be better when turning corners. Light does not go out to side enough. Had to replace the instrument panel screen, but it was under warranty.

Problem with highway Steering

We brought the car for its great fuel economy and nothing else. The car isn't cute, the ride is not what we were used to but we knew that. We test drove the Prius many times before buying it. But during our first long distance trip (400 miles) we experienced handling problems. The car wanted to move from side to side, I was constantly adjusting the wheel. There were also cross winds during part of the trip, which made things worst. Spoke to my local Toyota Service department and corporate Customer Service, they indicated the car was "Working as designed". My wife refuses to use the Pruis for long distance highway driving.
