A Very Good Buy

2007 Toyota Matrix XR 4dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl 4A)

After 1,000 miles, I have no regrets. Bought for its gas mileage and versatile interior which are even better than I expected. Ave. 29 mpg local and 37 mpg highway. Driver's seat is high, but I'm short so its fine. Added side air bags, stability and traction control, ABS, window tint and leather seats. The versatile interior is great whether carrying groceries or lumber. A more powerful engine would be nice, but I'll take the mpg. A comfortable car mostly driven locally. I have no doubt this was an excellent purchase.

Sporty look, not feel. Snow is a no go.

My husband and I bought this car about 3 1/2 years ago. We downgraded from an SUV to try and counterbalance rising gas prices at the time. I had done my research. Reliability seemed good, and it had very few what I call "important" car complaints such as transmission, lemon issues, or major car malfunctions. This still holds true today, so if you're looking for a car that includes those things then this is the car for you. What I didn't look at was handling, particularly in the snow as we live near the mountains. The storage room is fantastic, comfort level was great for long road trips, and the mpg were not horrible. After looking at additional reviews, I will second what many have said though. The paint does chip, the interior does seem to scratch easily, and the real zinger is that the clutch is the worst I have ever experienced. I have driven manual cars my whole life, and I can't for the life of me catch on to this one. After 3 1/2 years I still either rev it excessively or let it die trying to take off. When pushing the clutch in, it's like pulling a rubber band. The tension just gets worse and worse so there is no let off point. You better pray you don't run into traffic otherwise you'll have a sore leg the next day. The engine is weak, but I didn't expect anything less because I wanted a car that got better gas mileage. Between the clutch and the weak engine though, driving in the snow is a nightmare (yes I have snow tires on). I absolutely HAVE to start it in second gear or else I spin out and even then it's iffy. The lack of response on ice makes it a road hazard not only to me but anyone around me as well. I thought I just needed some time getting used to it, because my last car was an SUV. I think 3 winters is enough testing time. Oh, and yes, I have driven in the snow my whole life and yes other front wheel drive cars seem to do just fine. Pros: Roomy, great storage, decent gas mileage. Ideal for road trips. Cons: Terra-bad in the snow or even rain, worst clutch ever, poor paint and interior quality.

Very happy with it!

After having been driven an Aurora and spending thousands of dollars on gas and repair, I decided to buy a Toyota car. Since my 1st choice the Prius was a little over my budget, decided to go with the Matrix. Bottom line I am very happy with my choice. The car is easy to drive, has a lot of cargo space and I spend much less time at the gas pump.

Good City/Town Car

After 11,500 miles the Matrix is finally broken in enough to review it. The usable space is fantastic. It has plenty of zip for city/town driving (especially w/ TRD performance filter). Ours is loaded as possible w/ sunroof, wheels, upgrade stereo, ABS, airbag package, trim package, etc. These cars look silly w/o the extra trim IMO. My disappointment rests in the cars rattles in the dash and elsewhere. Way too new for this, and whatever happened to legendary fit and finish. Lousy Gdyr tires and their harsh ride had some to do w/ onset of rattles (better ride and fewer rattles now w/ Michelin tires), but it's still no excuse. Best mileage thus far has been 33 mpg (highway), disappointed.

I purchased my 2007 Matrix XR brand new, no one else even test drove it. I have 30,000 miles on it and so far at less than 20,000 miles they had to resurface the rotors, but the pads are just fine. They then replaced the belt. Then, they replaced the water pump and the belt again! Today I was driving down the road and it just died. It's in the shop right now. I don't know yet what this latest problem it, but of course it is out of warranty now. The car style is great for hauling stuff. Love the fold down back and passenger seats and love that the window in back opens without having to open the entire back.
