2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Consumer Reviews

First 2 weeks with 2024 LC 1958
Here is my short review of my new Land Cruiser 1958 after first two weeks of ownership. I am not going to cover the obvious like off-road capability. That's what this vehicle is intended for, so there is no point in writing about it. Positives: - Ride: For a body-on-frame, off-road oriented vehicle, the ride is pretty comfortable (better than comparable off-road vehicles) - Handling: Again, for the type of vehicle, handling is good, without excessive body lean on curves. It's easy to control the vehicle at highway speeds. - Noise: The engine is quite noisy under heavier load, but at steady speed the interior is very quiet. Road noise is minimal (I credit the tires for it), and wind noise is only perceptible above 65-70 mph. - Seat comfort: The seats are comfortable, with the right combination of soft layer on top and firm support underneath. They are well shaped and supportive. - Build quality: I am engineer with quite a lot of experience in quality control, and I am very picky about it. Honestly, I can say that I still haven't found any fabrication quality defect with my LC. Long-term reliability is to be determined, but at least it's built well. - Creature comforts: In spite of being a base-trim, utility vehicle, it comes with a decent amount of comfort features: 3-zone auto A/C, heated seats, heated steering wheel. - Sound system: The basic sound system is actually pretty good, better than what I have experienced in other Toyotas (I had 7 of them). - Complete package: Like all Toyotas you get a complete package without having to select a myriad of "options" and "packages". It comes fully equipped for towing, and attachment points for running boards, rock rails, roof rack. Unlike other brands which start with low MSRP, but you have to pick a dozen of expensive "options" to make the car usable, this one comes complete. - Power and acceleration: It's not a sports car, but acceleration is good for the type of vehicle. The engine feels relaxed at highway speeds and rarely has to work above 2000 rpm except when accelerating. There is no turbo lag thanks to instant torque from the electric motor. - 4WD controls: No gimmicks, not fancy computer-controlled off-road modes (with a dozen of clutches that overheat and fail when you need them most), just manually selectable center differential lock, rear differential lock and 2-speed transfer case. Beats any computer-controlled system if the driver knows what he/she is doing. - Safety system: Toyota TSS 3.0 works very well. If you don't like how it keeps control of the car, most likely it's because you are just a bad driver. Neutral: - Fuel economy: I am averaging 22 mpg in mostly city driving. Better than competitors, but not outstanding. - Interior materials: I love the cloth trimmed seats which have a very nice feel to the touch. But everywhere else it's hard plastic. There is no padded surface in sight with exception of the center console lid. A bit more soft padding on the doors wouldn't cost much and make the interior a much nicer place. Negatives: - Storage space: There is very little storage space. The glovebox is minimal, the center console is small, and storage space under the trunk floor is very limited. It's hard to find space for and keep organized stuff that I typically carry with me: recovery gear, air compressor, hitch ball mount, etc. - Cargo space: The trunk floor is very high and cargo volume is small for a vehicle of this size. It's obviously bigger than a small SUV, sedan or a hatchback, but it's less than what an average mid- to big(ish)-SUV would have. It's enough for my needs, but it may be disappointing for somebody who is specifically looking for an SUV with a lot of cargo space. - Tires: I like the fact that tires are very quiet, but they are useless for any type of off-roading. A vehicle in this category should come with truck-type tires with at least a bit more aggressive tread and reinforced sidewalls. - Transmission shifting: The transmission shifts OK when accelerating, but downshifts are harsh when slowing down to a stop. Verdict: If you are looking for a very capable off-road SUV that you can also use and enjoy as a daily driver and/or family vehicle, the new Land Cruiser strikes the right balance. It is much more practical and comfortable than Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco. On the other hand, typical family-oriented SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, KIA Telluride, Hyundai Santa Fe or Honda Pilot simply can't go places the Land Cruiser can. UPDATE: The honeymoon is over. Now, after owning the Land Cruiser for 6 months, I can honestly say that it has been very disappointing. Here is why: 1) Fuel economy: terrible, 19-20 mpg and requires Premium gas 2) Comfort: ride is very uncomfortable and engine/road/wind noise are terrible. At city speeds, the harsh, unrefined engine noise is very intrusive. Above 60 mph, wind and road noise make longer road trips extremely unpleasant. 3) Practicality: cargo space is small for vehicle of this size and high floor (due to hybrid battery) make loading heavy objects an exercise in weightlifting. There is very limited storage space inside, only a tiny center console and minuscule glove box. 4) Interior: hard plastic everywhere, looks and feels extremely cheap. Easily scratched. 5) Long term reliability and durability: while I haven't experienced any mechanical problems yet, the powertrain is extremely over-complicated. The combination of small displacement 4-cyl engine with a turbo and hybrid makes it the MOST complicated powertrain there is. The engine bay is extremely crowded so doing any maintenance or repairs will be a nightmare. Because of how complicated it is, it is bound to fail and cost a fortune to repair. Overall, mediocre vehicle that isn't worth half of the price. Stay away, it's pure hype and zero substance. I'm trading in mine soon.

My ‘58 is Great…
Purchased in 06-2024, somehow circumvented the dealer wait-list, paid MSRP, no mark-up, no problem, am delighted to own and drive this vehicle, currently getting 26.2 MPG as a daily driver, am liking the interior ergonomics and fit and finish, and the power train is a great feature and performs well, yes, the cargo floor is high and a bit of wind noise from the high/upright windshield but knew that from the ‘first drive’ reviews, so far no complaints/disappointments, hopefully shall be driving it happily for a decade or more, thanks toyota, great job…

Lives up to the Hype 2
Agree with previous review regarding the kind of noisy acceleration of the turbo 4. Very diesel like. To get the fuel economy, torque, and supreme off road capability I think we have to "get used to" some trade off's here and there. If you want a comfy, quiet highway cruiser then there are definitely better options. This is a serious Overlander, so if that's your genre, then 5 stars for the Land Cruiser. FYI - I just did 1K mile road trip and averaged a little over 25mpg so mine appears to perform as advertised. Hope that helps?

Got the Heritage Blue!
I got the mid level trim and picked mine up in early August. I’ve put around 4K miles on it. No issues so far. The engine is a little jerky and takes some getting used to after you first buy it. Lots of horse power and there’s a slight turbo lag. I’m getting about 21 MPG in real world driving. Unfortunately, it does require premium fuel and doesn’t have the biggest gas tank. On the plus side, it’s quite comfortable and it’s just a really cool car in so many ways. I honestly love it. Is it perfect? No. It has a lack of Storage up front for things like sunglasses and your wallet. The cool box is pretty much stupid and tiny and I wish I had a regular regular compartment instead.. There’s not as much room in the very back as in my 5th gen 4Runner, the seats don’t lie flat, and it beeps at me way too much. But there’s a lot to love. I honestly just love being inside of it. It’s comfortable. The buttons are tactile and laid out sensibly. The infotainment system is very good, and the JBL audio is pretty decent in my opinion. It really moves on the highway. It also just looks like a million bucks. I mean honestly, Toyota really nailed it in terms of style with this car. It’s also the right size and super easy to maneuver, especially with its incredibly good turning radius. Happy with my purchase.

Lives up to the hype
I currently love 99% of this vehicle. It’s comfortable, perfect size for maneuvering and parking vs. the huge pickup I had prior and our Tahoe. Technology is wonderful and PLENTY of power from the drivetrain. My only nit pick is how noisy the engine is on acceleration. I’m getting use to it but it reminds me of a diesel. If that doesn’t bother you, you can’t go wrong with adding the premium package too!

Satisfied Toyota Owner
The Land Cruiser is a beautiful and well thought out vehicle. It’s very affordable and capable, both on and off road. It’s a more credible vehicle than the 4Runner and it shows. It carries on the Land Cruiser Tradition. I’m getting 22 mpg in town and have not yet taken a trip with it but I am sure it will get at least it’s claimed 25 mpg on the highway. I’m glad I made the purchase of my first Land Cruiser.

2024 Land Cruiser is not what I expected
The land cruiser lusted for 69,185.00. I purchased it 3 weeks ago it looks great handles great. The 4 cylinder engine is ample enough for highway speeds. Unfortunately there is almost no storage and the center console is great if you don't need to carry anything. My biggest issue after driving it for the first week i noticed a vibration in the drivers seat so i took it back to the dealership to get the tires balanced. After an hour and a half the technician came and got me to drive a brand new land cruiser, I said I have a brand new one and he said but you need to drive this one so I did and sure enough it had the same problem and I was told they could not fix it and maybe if Toyota got enough complaints they would let them know ow how to fix it. That is not exceptable but I left with it not corrected only with the hopes Toyota would recognize the issue. Not a happy camper at this time.

Solid Vehicle, Great Design, Worth the Wait
I purchased mine about 10 weeks ago and have put about 2600 miles on it. I've always loved the Land Cruiser but didn't like how it had strayed too far from its roots over the past two decades. The 1958 ticked all the boxes for me since I wanted the full-time 4WD and locking diffs but wanted to forego the luxury items such as leather seats, larger touch screen, power lift gates, and all the extra cameras. My only reservation was the 4-cylinder turbo hybrid and whether it would provide long term reliability since I tend to keep my vehicles for many years. The fact that Toyota has been making hybrids for such a long time and that this model was assembled at the Tahara plant in Japan helped me to pull the trigger on this purchase. So far, I love everything about it. It feels more solid than any other vehicle I've had, the interior and exterior design is perfect in my opinion, and it's getting about 23.5 mpg with mixed driving in Normal mode. The only negative I can think of so far is the size of the fuel tank. It would be nice to have a range of more than 300 miles since I'm coming from a vehicle with a 400-mile range. That being said, my previous vehicle was returning about 16 mpg on premium fuel, so fuel stops are running about $60 rather than $90-$100 and I can certainly live with that. Overall, I'm very pleased and hope to have this Land Cruiser for many years.

Loving my new car
When someone Totalled my Lexus GX I decided to check out the new 2024 Land Cruiser 1958. I didn’t want a 3rd row. I didn’t care about a sunroof. But I did want better gas mileage. I loved the idea of a hybrid but I didn’t want to plug anything in at the end of a long work day. The LC doesn’t need to be plugged in which also works for me. The gas mileage is so much better than my GX. This car has everything I wanted but nothing that I didn’t.

This Land Cruiser sells itself.
Had no intention of buying a Land Cruiser but there in the showroom was this Meteor Grey (?) well sculpted not to big, not to small but just perfectly proportioned SUV. We both hopped inside and the comfortable yet supportive seats and well laid out interior controls with great visibility and not a mismatched panel gap to be found. When you grab the well placed door pull and close it, it lets out a solid this sound as if closing a vault door. Not heavy, but just solid. The headroom even with the moon roof is plenty and with multiple seat adjustments along with powered steering wheel, we were both able to find a perfect driving position even with me at 6'1 and the spouse 5'11. Having two position memory allowed all those fine adjustments to each be stored ensuring as we switch drivers we don't have to go through it all over again. The soft material where my knees are are welcome as I rested my right leg against the console side. Then their are the buttons! While we appreciate the modern look of our EV and it's minimal buttons, it's so nice to just push on an actual button to ventilate or hear out seats, and another for temp, and another for record, etc;. Had no idea how simple these are in form and function as we'd forgotten. The driving and dynamics are fantastic for a vehicle half the Land Cruisers size, but I'm here it's well done. No body roll, no harsh thumps from holes on the road, wind noise is surprisingly low for this upright and large vehicle. The hybrid is almost imperceptible as it switches the motor on and off as necessary never really noticing it's not a V8 under the hood. It's surprisingly swift from a stop and braking doesn't come with any nose diving down when stopping quickly. Interior could use more storage. Our Escalade has spaces for two of everything even if we never no what's on all of those spaces after a while. The Land Cruiser isn't going to let us clutter much up and the cooler in the console is a neat idea and even has its own coolant and fan system so you have the windows down in the mountains and cabin A/C off and and still have our Liquid Death cooling in the console if for some reason we have them hot when putting them in the LC. Our MPGs have been averaging 25.2 in suburban driving which is amazing compared to the Escalade or the QX80. So a couple months in and we'll update on any issues, but so far, we're officially thrilled with the execution of this truck.
Superior
Traded in our 2012 Explorer for a First Edition. Loved the Explorer but the build quality of the Landcruiser is evident immediatley. This is a heavy truck purpose built to get you to some cool places. Obviously not a Jeep or a Wrangler, but it can do most of what those two can with better fuel economy and a much better ride. This sucker will be on the road 25 years from now with proper care. Looking forward to getting on some rugged terrain for backcountry skiing and hiking. Fuel economy is excellent for the size of the vehicle. We are going to keep the stock tires as most of our driving will be on pavement but this vehicle is built like a tank.

Better then what I have read or seen on Youtube
I waited 9 months to get my Landcruiser. I ordered the Base model with premium package and 20" wheels. coming from an Acura MDX I am extremely pleased with the view from the road. I sit high enough to see the road with excellent visibility on all the windows. I read about the LC not being fast but it has plenty of punch and have not had any issues passing anyone on the road or getting onto ramps. I have driven my LC for 13,000 miles and not have had any issues at all. The seats are extremely comfortable for long trips and the interior buttons are all easy to access. the heads up display is great for me as well. I cannot speak enough my decision. Anyone on the fence should take one for a test drive. You will not be disappointed. Update 24k miles and the Land Cruiser is driving perfect getting 23mpg overall. Best SUV on the Market.

It’s the Little Things and Lack of Parts
The Good. I love the styling and ride of my 1958. I’ve owned several 4WD vehicles and this is one of the most capable and pleasant to drive. The styling is also top notch and having looked at the Defender and GX550, the LC took the honors. Gas mileage is also markedly improved over the 5th Gen 4Runner, and I regularly get 23-24 on the highway and around 21 combined. For a vehicle this large, that’s impressive. The Bad. Toyota generally did a very good job with this vehicle. It’s a nice bridge between the 4Runner and top end LC. That said, there are a lot of small misses that could have been avoided ranging from poor trunk design, to present but difficult to find options, to one of the worst infotainment systems in a post 2010 vehicle. The ugly. Ultimately, the good would outweigh the bad on this vehicle with one major fatal exception: lack of parts support. I have had two significant issues that have required repair - one a warranty item and the second a broken windshield. On the warranty item it took two months for the part to come from Japan (pre-tariffs) so my car was out of service for two of the nine months I’ve owned it. The windshield, which cracked after getting hit by a rock on the highway is on back order indefinitely and the dealership doesn’t have a backup option. So I drive since there’s no plan B. I’ve been told by the dealership and Toyota corporate that it may take six to 12 months to get the windshield. So … if you plan to use a LC as a daily driver, I would not recommend it given the lack of available parts, and especially the windshield (after-market windshields are in very short supply) unless this is a secondary vehicle for you. Toyota sold 15k LCs in the U.S. in Q125 so it’s surprising that they would put a vehicle at this volume into the market without a plan for replacement parts, but given Toyota corporate’s response, they don’t seem to care. Once these issues are ironed out, it’s a very nice riding and handling car and it has many positives.

My Love Affair with my Blue Beluga
This is a dream vehicle as it is so damn capable, will take you wherever you want to go and it looks good doing it. I wish there were more accessories to doll up this brute, but as it gets into the mainstream everyone will be jumping on that bandwagon. We have the Heritage Blue and even though we live in Western Washington have never seen another one.

Intangibles that you can't put a price on
There are some things that defy rational thinking and common sense...like love, and that explains why I absolutely adore and appreciate this car. Forget the little knocks that you read here, forget comparing feature sets with other vehicles. That is your rational brain. Lean into the look and feel of this beautiful LC...shift like a man like we used to, hear the roar of that turbo, count on 1 hand as you go around town and on long drives how few LC's you see on the road. This is such a unique car and it will last you for decades even when the others have gone through fads and try to capture your attention with 60 inch screens and 20 cup holders. And to say this cargo space is small, just push the middle seat down and you have 82 cubic feet! We have moved an entire house over rough road with our 1958 with no problem. Isn't that more important than lifting stuff 4 additional inches? Landcruiser people don't mind putting their back into things, they enjoy lifting the trunk, they love the manual cloth seats. If that's not you, have fun with your telluride. I am sure alot of people feel similarly about their Broncos ( not Bronco sport, which are quite pathetic). And I did too...really like that car but fate made me test drive these back to back and there is no comparison in my opinion. If you mostly off-road, then I can see where why you'd disagree.

8000 km Check Up
I have the Middle Trim. I could not be more pleased with this Rig. Very Comfortable. Very Responsive, it is Immediate, hard to believe for a 4 Cyl. Very Impressive! Best I’ve done so far on fuel is 8.6L/100km on Cruise at 90km/hr 10.4L/100 km on Cruise at 115 km/hr It seems to be getting better as it breaks in. 8000 km check revealed all the fluid leaked out of the left rear shock. I Love this Rig! I dont know how they could have made it better. It’s a work of Art.

Most don't come with Disconnecting Sway Bar
I've owned quite a few off-road oriented Toyotas over the years and am a big fan, including of my new 2025 Land Cruiser Land Cruiser (LCLC, i.e., not the 1958), but there are a few drawbacks of which potential buyers might like to be aware. -- The disconnecting sway bar is an approximately $1200 option -- not standard equipment -- on the LCLC. It's not available at all on the 1958, and most new LCLCs are being shipped without them. And since you no longer can order Toyotas to spec, you might have trouble finding one with the DSB. -- The ride is truck-like. My 2023 Lexus GX 460 with its KDSS is much smoother. If ride quality is important to you but you want an off-road oriented Toyota product you'll do better with a new or used Lexus GX or LX. -- Fellow sufferers of back pain may struggle to find a comfortable seating position as I have. The seats in my other vehicles are more comfortable. This probably won't be a problem for most. -- The electronic nannies on this vehicle are overwhelming. Warning beeps and messages of all kinds appear constantly. Happily, most of this can be turned off but you'll need to spend a while with the options menu. It would be great if Toyota installed a single switch that would stop all of the electronic screaming when this vehicle is taken off-road. -- The stock tires are good on-road but aren't going to cut it in serious off-roading conditions. I'm considering replacement options. -- If you get the premium package you're getting the cool box, which is a nice feature but cuts down on center console storage space. And we haven't yet found a convenient place for the front passenger to put his/her phone. That's it for the nitpicks. Otherwise this is a terrific vehicle worthy of the Land Cruiser nameplate. Outstanding build quality, beautiful interior, strong powertrain, very capable off-road (with the right tires, and if you're lucky with the DSB), and nicely composed on-road.

Bad brakes; bad windshield design; bad service
I bought my LC trim with Premium Package on December 31. Aesthetically, it is nice. Unfortunately, the brakes squeal loudly in reverse. It is a known issue that Toyota will not repair. My dealership told me that it was because of the materials used in the brake pads. Also, within 2 weeks, the windshield developed a crack. From what I've read online, this is common because the windshield is so vertical. It has been months now, and Toyota will not send a replacement windshield. They say it's on backorder. Except, in the meantime, Toyota continues to manufacture and sell LCs with new windshields. When I asked them to send me one of the new windshields they use for new LCs, they said it is in a different supply chain. Totally unhelpful and nonsensical. Toyota Brand Engagement is unhelpful. I have been trying to work with them for months. The first representative didn't contact me again. After weeks, I called back and was assigned a new representative. He supposedly secured me a replacement windshield. Told me in a voicemail message and he closed my file. I never got the windshield. So, once again, the burden was placed on me to run the issue down with Brand Engagement. Now they are telling me it is on back order again. So, I am driving a $70,000 vehicle that looks like a $10,000 vehicle, and sounds like a $2,000 vehicle. Making monthly payments the whole time. It's as if Toyota writes you off once you aren't a source of revenue anymore. The last Brand Engagement rep laughed at me over the phone. I've asked to speak with their repurchase department. At this point, I regret buying it although it's a nice design. The only bright spots in my ownership have been my interactions with Palmer Toyota of Mobile, AL and Allen Toyota of Gulfport, MS. Great service so far. But the dealerships are independent and not part of Toyota corporate.

LC 1958 great off-road SUV
Currently own the 1958. It’s comfortable, perfect size, plenty space in trank, maneuvering good. Engine sound slightly remaining me diesel but not noisy. Technology is awesome, plenty of power from the drivetrain. Seats comfortable and off course off-road capability great. My only few issues such as little space in front panel, no wireless charging and hard plastic on door instead of soft material. That's it, overall great off-road SUV.

Avoid this vehicle
We have had our Toyota Landcruiser now for 6 months and are trading it in for a Tundra. Here are the concerns: Overpriced - premium model Poor drive quality Poor lumbar support Cheap materials Sluggish even in sport mode Terrible gas mileage Dangerous instability during turns We haven’t tried the off roading capabilities as we’re a family of 5 and use the vehicle around the city primarily. We have done extensive highway driving. Overall we’re extremely disappointed. We bought the vehicle new and could not test drive it beforehand. I would strongly advise to avoid this vehicle until there is a major price reduction or redesign. So very disappointed. Toyota should do much much better.

Wonderful vehicle
I’ve always wanted a Land Cruiser. So far it has lived up to the hype. Roomy and smooth ride. Only negative is the gas mileage is ok not what I expected for a hybrid. Wish it had electric trunk opener.
