Used 2018 Toyota 4Runner Consumer Reviews
Solid Toyota but under powered
I came off of a 2008 4Runner Limited with 210,000 miles. Loved it and didn't want to part with it but... it was time to let it go. After putting only 4K on my used 2016 Limited CPO (bought with 34k miles) I'm not so sure I did the right thing. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a solid vehicle with great interior, tech features, full time 4WD etc. etc. It's definitely seems down on power as compared to my old one. Even if the engine is rated 40HP and torque more, it drives completely differently. It continually shifts into lower gear when the slightest push of the accelerator is used. If you try to accelerate normally (just normally mind you) the green ECO light goes out and the gas mileage indicator goes right down to 14 or 15 MPG. Even on trips with the cruise set to 75 I only get 17 MPG, combined around town I'm down to 16.4 as indicated by the mileage gauge. Now I get that it's heavy, but I also own a 2011 Camaro SS convertible M6 that has some bolt on's and a tune and it makes 420 rear wheel HP and 425 torque and it gets 16.6 MPG with me doing a daily beating on it. It also weighs 4,110 lbs, but of course is a bit more aerodynamic than the 4Runner. What I'm getting at here is the Camaro V8 engine is making close to 490 HP at the engine and it somehow gets the same MPG as a 270HP V6? C'mon Toyota, you can do better! My old 4Runner did a consistent 18+MPG combined and only dropped below that when I used 4WD. Whatever they did to the gearing, trans shift points etc. etc. made the drive-ability much much worse than my old 2008. Other than the sluggishness and constant shifting it runs well and is easy to drive, has great features, tons of interior space etc. But they did eliminate the nice little fold out tray that was in the top of the center console, it was a great place to put your morning breakfast sandwich while you drove to work or elsewhere. Update: 7/2019 Vehicle ran great through the winter months, the full time 4 wheel drive is a nice feature here in New England. I never noticed tire slippage and the traction control light only came on a few times. I did re-use my Blizzaks and rims from my 2018 4Runner so they helped traction a lot. Dealer replaced the passenger side air bag on a recall notice, no issues there. I did notice that the engine rattles a LOT on start up and even after warmed up is quite loud. Took it to the dealer and they said it's normal: the engine has a known rattle to it due to piston slap when cold. I just wanted to make sure and also get a complaint in while it's on warranty. I hope it's another 210,000 trouble free miles like my 2018! I eventually got used to the lack of power, but it still bugs me on trips north when the engine has to downshift for most hills on the highway. My 2003 Pathfinder never did that, even loaded up with 3 people and snowboard gear. Update 1/1/2022. SAVED OUR LIVES This vehicle saved my and my wife's life. We were hit on the highway by a person that lost control while trying to pass me on the right. We were spun into the grassy median / drainage ditch where we rolled and flipped several times. Amazingly I am unhurt and my wife only has whiplash and a small cut on her elbow. Police called it a Christmas miracle. If you saw the vehicle you'd never guess that we walked away. Every air bag went off except for the 2 front ones, which saved us from facial injury either by design or default. We obviously didn't need them. We were wearing seatbelts. The vehicle took a severe beating but completely protected us. Every window was broken except for the drivers door and the moonroof. Amazingly, the doors still opened. Heck of a good cabin structure!

Just What I Need!
This is an extremely reliable vehicle that fits in my garage bay, tows my trailer, rides comfortably, has intuitive controls, puts out excellent audio sound, and provides an excellent driver’s view on all sides. It has four wheel drive when I need it, and the better handling rear wheel drive when I don’t.

4 Runner Two Thumbs Up
First - a disclaimer; this is my first new vehicle in 11 years. The technological leap was huge, so by comparison to my Honda Element, the 4Runner is amazing. I use this for hauling, off-road, camping and outdoors activities. I'm just starting out with it, but the fuel economy has been great - much more than I expected. Highway travel has been more than 24mpg! Bopping around town takes me down to 21.5. I've been carefully recording my fuel use because frankly this far exceeds the window sticker fuel economy of 17/21 with 18mpg average. Cargo space is great... very comfortable... plenty of power and looks great. So far, so good!

Simply a well built beast
I own 2 4runners. Beyond subpar fuel economy it's a truly fantastic truck. If your tech freak this is not your car. Old technology that works very well with near flawless fit and finish and reliability.

Disappointed in Sluggish Gas Guzzling performance
I'm a first time Toyota owner. Have always loved the 4runner look and finally decided to trade my F-150 and try one. I went with the TRD off road model because I really like the sportier all black trim on the inside and the rims. I probably won't do a lot of off-roading but I do have use for the 4 wheel drive in the winter and I love the "truck" feel. Not many SUVs left like it. Also, I'm not a tech guy so the lack of tech options that many reviews talk about doesn't bother me. So, I've had my new 4runner for a few weeks now and have my first 1,000 miles on it. About half of those are highway miles. There is a lot that I really like about it. Love the way it looks, love the stance, interior is comfortable but not too plush, ride is quite nice for an off-roader, quality seems great, no squeaks or rattles which I can't stand. I have to sadly say though, that I'm very disappointed with the engine performance. It feels extremely sluggish and non-responsive to the gas pedal. I noticed this even on test drive but figured It was just different from what I was used to and since all the reviews I read pegged the 0-60 at 7.5-8 seconds, I didn't think it would be an issue and I'd quickly get used to it. Unfortunately, not the case. The sluggishness is a continual disappointment. In fact, I have tested the 0-60 myself about a half dozen times and I can't get to 60 in under 10 seconds. That's nailed to the floor 100%. If I actually drove like that, I think I would get about 5 mpg! Normal accelerator use takes FOREVER to get to normal highway speed. That leads me to my second real disappointment which is the fuel consumption. I knew from reviews that these were not great with gas mileage but mine in considerably worse even then the estimate ratings. They are rated 17 city - 21 hwy (avg 18). As I noted above, I drive about a 50/50 mix and my avg mpg after 1,000 miles has topped out at only 15.7 mpg! Even being very "gentle" with the accelerator, I can't get it to creep up any higher than that. I should say that I'm not trying to nit-pic. I REALLY wanted to love this vehicle. I'm just really struggling to get past the poor performance issues. I wonder, are the 0-60 ratings and mpg ratings just overly generous/overstated, or could there possibly actually be some kind of a problem with my engine? And I wonder if any other owners share these disappointments? Anyway, if these issues are of concern to you, you're definitely not going to be pleasantly surprised by the 4runner.
