Great Ride

2018 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

I have read a lot of the reviews and some have found fault with the ride. They need to understand this SUV is built on a truck frame and not a unibody like some of the softer SUV's. This vehicle is strong, shifts well (Toyota should have never changed to a 6 speed in the Tacoma's; they should have stuck with this one from the 4Runner). Although mine is a 2wd, I get 24 on the highway and around 18 mpg in town. The vehicle has a solid feel and when you close the doors you can hear how solid it is. I had a new Tacoma and although it is a good looking truck, the transmission left a lot to be desired. I switched over to the 4Runner and haven't been disappointed. This SUV sits up high, gives you a good feel for the road and performs well. My only drawback is I wish it had a more powerful stereo as standard equipment but overall its not bad and the navigation works well. I love this vehicle.

Dealerships refuse to fix

2018 4Runner. Ongoing front end vibration issues. Well documented on the internet as a known problem with the 5th gen 4Runner. Dealerships (Las Vegas)won't write up repair orders in a manner that reflects the actual problem I assume to avoid having to repair it or an eventual lemon law claim. I could trade it ofcourse but it doesn't seem right to pawn my $40k problem off on someone else so it will become a habitually recycled vehicle within the market making these unscrupulous people more and more money each time it's once again traded and resold. I still have a '07 4Runner which I love and drive daily. It's unforunate Toyota now seems just as sketchy as the other manufacturers who refuse to stand behind their vehicles. This is my last Toyota. If a person has to settle for a vehicle with an ongoing unresolved issues they may as well but something more capable or more fun than a Toyota product. I do get the impression Toyota service advisors just generally treat women like they are a joke so perhaps them just assuming I am stupid is a big part of the issue here. Regardless- I no longer recommend Toyota...this entire ownership experience has been absolutely appalling.

Finally, a car that checks all of the boxes for me

I have been a fan of the 4Runner for a few years now, and even talked my brother into buying a used '10 SR5 Premium. After seeing him rack up 140k miles and it still feeling like a new car, I fell in love with this model. Expecting my first child, I wanted something bigger than a sedan and better in Cleveland winters. Tired of all of the crossovers that are minivan substitutes with 4 doors, I wanted something masculine and capable. After making a few calls, I was able to get a good deal on a Magnetic Gray Metallic SR5 Premium. I love how it has just want I want and nothing more-"leather" heated seats, moonroof, 3 rows and navigation. The ride is super smooth, I don't get the complaints of a jostling "truck-like" ride. It sits nice and high, something else I was looking for. The controls are knobs, no little buttons to turn up the A/C, which is refreshingly simple and easy. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the coolest feature on the 4Runner- the rear window. Put it down along with all four windows and the moonroof on a summer night and try to not smile.

Underpowered but nice

If you want an SUV that has power both on and off road you may want to rethink this one. Acceleration is lacking and for six cylinders the gas mileage is also a bit skimpy. If those things don’t matter it’s a great vehicle! Wish they’d bring back the 4.7 V-8 as an option!!

I came off of a 2008 4Runner Limited with 210,000 miles. Loved it and didn't want to part with it but... it was time to let it go. After putting only 4K on my used 2016 Limited CPO (bought with 34k miles) I'm not so sure I did the right thing. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely a solid vehicle with great interior, tech features, full time 4WD etc. etc. It's definitely seems down on power as compared to my old one. Even if the engine is rated 40HP and torque more, it drives completely differently. It continually shifts into lower gear when the slightest push of the accelerator is used. If you try to accelerate normally (just normally mind you) the green ECO light goes out and the gas mileage indicator goes right down to 14 or 15 MPG. Even on trips with the cruise set to 75 I only get 17 MPG, combined around town I'm down to 16.4 as indicated by the mileage gauge. Now I get that it's heavy, but I also own a 2011 Camaro SS convertible M6 that has some bolt on's and a tune and it makes 420 rear wheel HP and 425 torque and it gets 16.6 MPG with me doing a daily beating on it. It also weighs 4,110 lbs, but of course is a bit more aerodynamic than the 4Runner. What I'm getting at here is the Camaro V8 engine is making close to 490 HP at the engine and it somehow gets the same MPG as a 270HP V6? C'mon Toyota, you can do better! My old 4Runner did a consistent 18+MPG combined and only dropped below that when I used 4WD. Whatever they did to the gearing, trans shift points etc. etc. made the drive-ability much much worse than my old 2008. Other than the sluggishness and constant shifting it runs well and is easy to drive, has great features, tons of interior space etc. But they did eliminate the nice little fold out tray that was in the top of the center console, it was a great place to put your morning breakfast sandwich while you drove to work or elsewhere. Update: 7/2019 Vehicle ran great through the winter months, the full time 4 wheel drive is a nice feature here in New England. I never noticed tire slippage and the traction control light only came on a few times. I did re-use my Blizzaks and rims from my 2018 4Runner so they helped traction a lot. Dealer replaced the passenger side air bag on a recall notice, no issues there. I did notice that the engine rattles a LOT on start up and even after warmed up is quite loud. Took it to the dealer and they said it's normal: the engine has a known rattle to it due to piston slap when cold. I just wanted to make sure and also get a complaint in while it's on warranty. I hope it's another 210,000 trouble free miles like my 2018! I eventually got used to the lack of power, but it still bugs me on trips north when the engine has to downshift for most hills on the highway. My 2003 Pathfinder never did that, even loaded up with 3 people and snowboard gear. Update 1/1/2022. SAVED OUR LIVES This vehicle saved my and my wife's life. We were hit on the highway by a person that lost control while trying to pass me on the right. We were spun into the grassy median / drainage ditch where we rolled and flipped several times. Amazingly I am unhurt and my wife only has whiplash and a small cut on her elbow. Police called it a Christmas miracle. If you saw the vehicle you'd never guess that we walked away. Every air bag went off except for the 2 front ones, which saved us from facial injury either by design or default. We obviously didn't need them. We were wearing seatbelts. The vehicle took a severe beating but completely protected us. Every window was broken except for the drivers door and the moonroof. Amazingly, the doors still opened. Heck of a good cabin structure!
