Used 2000 Toyota 4Runner Consumer Reviews
Tough and Reliable
I've had my 4runner for only a month now but already I see what a great car. It has smooth steering a great ride. But the acceleration house power could be better. It's is very offroad capable. It has conquered everything I've thrown at with ease. I suggest if you want a SUV that looks good on and off the road that can get you where you need to go no matter where it is in the city or out in the country get an SR5 4x4. But, if you need an SUV that is just for off roading I'd suggest a Chevy Tahoe Z71
Great SUV with a few mods
I was concerned about power so I add the TRD headers and exhaust, Amsoil air filter. These mods along with the 5 speed give it plenty of power and torque. The addition of OME heavy duty shocks and springs, slightly larger tires, and front sway bar quick disconnects create a serious cabable off road machine. Reliablilty is great. I think the air filter and headers may have improved my gas milage. I would highly recommend this SUV to anyone seeking a serious SUV. It rides like a truck. The truck underpinnings contribute to its off road reliablity. There is reason the UN and other aid agencies use Toyotas and Land Rovers in the most remote parts of the world.

Dogs are much happier now...
Go with the best and get a 4Runner. Get anything else and settle for less. We throw our dogs in the back and everyone's happy. Toyotas run forever. I just sold my 92 Toyota pickup with 175,000 miles on it. I expect our 4Runner will prove just as reliable!
Reliable
I have owned my 4runner for 6yrs and have 167,000 miles on it and have done nothing but regular maintenance. It is a little under powered but very reliable. I have been on several trails in Moab and in the Black Hills of SD, (great 4wd system) I have the Sport package with the electronic locker in the rear diff. Toyota has built a very reliable and dependable vehicle with this one.
Very happy with mine
Now has 40K. Perfect size for me and my outdoor activities. I wouldn't want to be 6'+ in the drivers seat. We take 2 kids camping with adequate room for kids and gear. Firm suspension but I wanted something to take 4 wheelin in the back country in Colorado - excellent there. Drives nice to me on the highway. Rarely need to use FWD in snow storms in the mountains. About 23 MPG from Grand Junction to Denver OVER the rockies / 19-20 around town - great for an SUV. I asked my mechanic about Toyotas before I bought one. Said I wouldn't see him much any more but when I do it will cost me. Good fit and finish, hasn't needed anything but oil changes in 40K.
