Used 1997 Mazda Protege Consumer Reviews
Sucks swamp water
Interior dome light has never worked (Dealer couldn't fix) Power windows track broken at 70K, but I only open the window once a month. Power window switch broken at 70K. No one every uses it. How could it wear out? Internal Engine noise when cold at 90K, charged $1,300 for repair. Problem returned in a week later. Now dealer reports to me that it isn't worth fixing. If I fail to use high test gas, valves ping. Tech's recommendation - "Use the good stuff". So, I used the good stuff and then this reportedly destroyed the catalytic converter (Another $800.00) 6 model years old and the blower motor going bad. One thing after another..
Great Car!
It is a small version of a luxury car.

Reliable, sensible car
I've driven this car all over the country, literally. Performs adequately, not powerful at all but extrememly reliable. The gas mileage is great (39ish on the highways). Overall, nothing special, but a good car to own.
Reliable and Good Gas Mileage
I own both a 97 and 98 Protégé. Both have been very dependable. I would recommend this car if you are looking for something that is inexpensive, reliable and provides good gas mileage. Both of my cars are LXs, which are somewhat sporty looking, but this is definitely not the car to buy if you are looking for performance.
cheap but reliable
We bought this car to "drive the wheels off". We have put few dollars into the car(brakes, emission system) and it still runs great and gets 31 MPG around town. This isn't a car for long trips with the family, but it does what we want it to a low cost.
