Pros
- Quick acceleration and sporty handling
- Comfortable ride quality
- Refined luxury-leaning interior
- PHEV powertrain is a rarity for a three-row SUV
Cons
- Below-average cargo capacity
- Regular fuel economy isn't any better than a standard CX-90's
- Small third-row seat
- Elevated price tag can be hard to justify
What's new
- All-new midsize three-row SUV, replacing the CX-9
- Kicks off the first CX-90 generation for 2024
Overview
When the Mazda CX-9 was last redesigned in 2016, it became one of our favorite three-row midsize SUVs. As the years went on, however, its lack of interior and cargo room became more of a liability as fresher and roomier rivals such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas debuted. But now Mazda is back once again vying for a top spot with the all-new 2024 CX-90.

The CX-90 is similar in size to the CX-9 it replaces as Mazda's flagship, though its wheelbase (the distance between front and rear wheels) grows by 7.5 inches, benefitting passenger and cargo space. The CX-9 was notable for delivering a more luxurious interior than its contemporaries, and the CX-90 builds on that refinement by delivering an experience that rivals entry-level luxury SUVs. Acceleration is strong and smooth thanks to a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is standard, and Mazda even offers a plug-in hybrid version that delivers an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range on a single charge.
Overall, we're impressed with the CX-90 and think it's a desirable choice for a three-row SUV. Besides the Telluride and Atlas, other alternatives include Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and Toyota Highlander. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to get our full report on where the CX-90 shines and where it comes up a little short.

8.5/10
How does the CX-90 PHEV drive? The CX-90 PHEV accelerates just as strongly as the regular CX-90. At the Edmunds test track, our test vehicle sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, which is about a second quicker than a Honda Pilot or Kia Telluride. But note that time is with the gas engine fired up and a charged battery. It's not nearly as quick when you're driving on pure electric power, taking a very slow 14.8 seconds to get to 60 mph. Out in the real world in hybrid mode, the PHEV feels similar to the non-PHEV CX-90, with brisk acceleration from a standstill and enough in reserve on the highway to make passing slower traffic a snap. In EV mode, the electric motor is fine at low speeds, such as zipping away from a stoplight, but overall the sluggish performance makes it hard to avoid the temptation to floor the throttle to engage the gas engine. Additionally, the electric motor works through the 8-speed automatic, and the shifts at low speed are notably more abrupt than when the gas engine is running. Of course, one of the reasons you'd pick the CX-90 is for its handling, and even in PHEV form it's a cut above most others in its class. The steering feels nicely weighted and accurate, and this big SUV stays planted and secure when cornering. It's fun for what it is, and the sole dynamic slipup is the brake pedal feel. There's no problem with stopping power, but it feels too touchy and takes a while to learn to stop smoothly.
Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the CX-90 PHEV? The CX-90 PHEV weighs a few hundred pounds more than its non-hybrid counterpart, but it still has a composed ride that's especially well suited to highway driving. Compared to others in its class, it skews a little toward the stiffer side, and our test vehicle's 21-inch wheels and skinny sidewall tires shoulder part of the blame for the rough ride over broken pavement. Nonetheless, we'll accept the added stiffness since the CX-90 generally handles better than other vehicles in its class.
The front seats are comfortable and supportive, at least for short and medium-duration drives. For the long haul, some of our drivers thought the seats were too narrow, requiring them to shift around and fidget to try to stay comfortable. There's a minimal amount of wind noise on the highway, but road and tire noise is higher than expected. The four-cylinder engine in the PHEV doesn't sound as nice as the inline-six used in the rest of the CX-90 lineup, but luckily you'll only really hear it at wide open throttle.

Interior
8/10
How’s the interior? The CX-90 PHEV's cabin is pleasing to the eye with rich-looking and -feeling surfaces everywhere. It's also perfectly functional. We like the use of physical buttons for major controls such as the audio system and climate controls, and they're clearly labeled and easy to find. The driving position has a cockpit-like feel, but the front passenger has easy access to various controls if needed. We also like that the CX-90 is easy to see out of, though the long hood can make it a little hard to place the CX-90's nose when you're parking.
The CX-90 PHEV offers seating configurations for seven or eight passengers across its three trim levels, but none offers the second- and third-row passenger space of the class leaders. It's not uncomfortable, but if your priorities are for your rear seaters to stretch out, the Hyundai Palisade and Volkswagen Atlas both feel more spacious.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? Adding to the sleek look and feel of the CX-90's interior is a low-profile center display screen and, on higher trims, a crisp-looking digital instrument panel. Both have crisp graphics, and we like the cool perspective view Sport mode gives the instruments. Our test vehicle had the available 12-speaker Bose audio system. It sounds OK for an upgraded system but requires a bit of fiddling with the settings to get crisp audio quality.
The center screen's native interface looks dated and is only accessible through the rotary control knob. The knob itself is nicely weighted and feels expensive, but some will pine for a touchscreen, even though the CX-90's screen is a bit far away. (Oddly, touch functionality does work when you're using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone integration.)
Advanced driver aids are plentiful, and all CX-90s come standard with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot warning and other systems. It's a competitive collection for the class, and we found the adaptive cruise to be more responsive and consistent than some competitors' systems.

Storage
7/10
How’s the storage? Since there isn't a lot of cargo space to begin with, it's a good thing the CX-90 PHEV doesn't sacrifice any for its battery. At its best, there's only a max of 15.9 cubic feet behind the third row of seats, 40.1 cubes behind the second, and 75.2 cubes when all seats are dropped. That's less than what's available from bigger rivals such as the Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas — not by a huge amount, but many buyers are drawn to this segment for the practicality.
Inside, the CX-90's style limits the amount of usable storage space available for front passengers. There's enough room for most odds and ends, but vehicles like the Telluride and Honda Pilot offer more storage options. The center console in particular is oddly shallow considering how wide and large the console is between the seats.
Got small children? You'll like that the CX-90's rear doors open wide and make it fairly easy to install bulky child safety seats. If you plan on towing with the CX-90, you'll want to skip the PHEV. Its tow rating maxes out at 3,500 pounds, which is no better than what you get from a Mazda CX-50.

Fuel Economy
8/10
How economical is the CX-90 PHEV? The EPA gives the CX-90 PHEV an estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg in combined city/highway driving when operating in hybrid mode. That's a few mpg better than what most other three-row SUVs get. And based on extensive real-world driving, we've found the EPA estimate to be pretty accurate. But note that the regular CX-90 also gets 25 mpg combined. To make the most of the PHEV's fuel economy, you'll need to frequently charge up and take advantage of its estimated 25 miles of all-electric range.
Value
7.5/10
Is the CX-90 PHEV a good value? One of the reasons we like the regular CX-90 so much is because it gives you a luxury experience at a reasonable price. The problem is that the CX-90 PHEV carries a luxury price as well. Its pricing is similar to that of an Acura MDX or Lincoln Aviator, and although neither is a PHEV, both are a little more luxurious and have badges that have more cachet than Mazda.
On the flip side, if you need a large-ish three-row SUV and it's just got to be a PHEV, the CX-90 is the only game in town since the Kia Sorento PHEV is notably smaller and others like the Volvo XC90 PHEV are considerably more expensive. Just make sure you plug it in frequently to maximize that battery-driven value.
Warranties are fairly standard but don't hold a candle to those offered by Hyundai and Kia. Roadside assistance is offered for three years/36,000 miles, but free maintenance is not offered.

Wildcard
8.5/10
We're already fans of the CX-90 thanks to its upscale look and fun-to-drive nature. The CX-90 PHEV simply builds on that appeal with its ability to save you at the pump, as long as you remember to plug in regularly. We wish it cost a bit less, but it's still a neat trick, and the fact that it compromises so little over the regular CX-90 is icing on the cake.
Which CX-90 does Edmunds recommend?
If the PHEV's 25-mile electric-only range catches your attention, we think the midlevel Premium trim adds enough desirable equipment like a panoramic moonroof, additional drive modes, and more driver assist tech to make it a worthy upgrade over the base Preferred trim.

Mazda CX-90 models
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is a three-row midsize SUV with seating for a maximum of eight passengers. The PHEV version employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid system with a single electric motor that pulls power from a 17.8-kWh battery pack. Combined output is 323 hp and 369 lb-ft, and Mazda estimates you can travel up to 25 miles on a full charge. It also has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Charging the battery from zero to 100% when using a 240-volt power source takes about two hours and 20 minutes, Mazda says. Unlike the regular CX-90, the CX-90 PHEV has a simplified trim structure with only three trim levels: Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus. 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
My wife's 17 year old RX 400h has been remarkably reliable, but needed replacement. We cross shopped multiple brands, including the Kia that Edmunds rated a bit higher than the CX 90. In my view that comparison review is valid, but only if your primary use case is as a younger family that needs to haul a soccer team, or if touch screens are more important to you than stopping … distances, gas mileage, insurance costs, and quality.
Remarkably, the CX 90 PHEV is a driver's car - an actual driver's car that's also a spacious hauler. We were shocked by the excellent handling and tight turning radius, and then I realized that the CX 90 PHEV is a mid engine design! The gas engine and electric motor are both behind the front axle: a "front-mid." For us, better handling, better braking, better quality, a gorgeous interior with properly firm seats, and radically superior fuel economy are a winning combination. A worthwhile tradeoff vs. a few extra cubic feet of space. You should also check insurance rates in your area. Kia/Hundai only added engine immobilizers in 2022, so at least where we live they're still being targetted by thieves and insurance rates here are higher for them.
To top it off this is a PHEV that can tow 3500 lbs and run electric for all of our local driving. No other brand offers a PHEV 3 row in our area excepting the much higher priced and (sadly) lower quality Lincoln.
In our view Mazda is no longer a direct competitor to Kia, Honda, Hyundai or Toyota - they're offering near BMW performance with Lexus-like quality at lower prices than traditional "luxury" brands. We highly recommend you consider this model.

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I sold my previous Lincoln Corsair GT due to the recall on the engine fires. Decided too long to wait for a solution. Started looking and placed an order for the 2023 Cadillac XT4 Sport but 2 months later the dealer had not even placed the order with the factory because of allocations. Terrible experience. Turned to Mazda after finding the CX-90 PHEV in Artisan Red with white interior. … Stunning interior and love the incredible red paint which changes colors based on light and curves in the design. Love it. The ride is incredible and super quiet due to the double pane glass. The gas mileage includes 28 miles of EV miles and that covers most daily trips for me. So, I'm getting eMPG of 76 which is incredible. I fill up maybe three times a year. The car has been superb since we moved and were able to load up a lot by lowering all the seats. Better than a pickup truck in my opinion. I have really been impressed with the Mazda sales process since the sales reps are not paid commission but straight salary. They get bonuses though but they are not desperate like some car sales reps are. They are more like Tesla in their behavior. The sales process was great and I had no bickering and got the car I wanted the day I picked it out. Was incredibly smooth and stress free. After getting the car, I researched Mazda's history and focus on engineering. Mazda uses a much thicker steel when creating the car and their paint process is well known as unique in the industry due to the levels of paint they do. I am really impressed with their plug in hybrid technology which I believe is helped by their Toyota relationship (Toyota owns 10% of Mazda and Mazda uses Toyota Finance). I'm quite impressed with Toyota since they lead the world in hybrid technology and was glad to find out of their relationship to Toyota.
Update 6 months later. Superb car. No complaints and only praises.

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Been a Toyota guy, but after months of trying to buy Grand Highlander max hybrid. With limited availability and once trim line was available, there were added accessories, added cost over $3-4k over MSRP. Started looking at Mazda, didn’t know they made a 3 row SUV, let alone PHEV. Test drove CX-90 PHEV, blew me away. Much nicer interior (luxury) and exterior vs Grand Highlander max … interior n exterior. But also Grand Highlander does not have a PHEV ! Living in the city I make many short trips during the week usually under 20 miles a trip. All electric mode range is up to 25-26 miles in CX-90 PHEV. Have had this CX-90 over a month and still haven’t had to stop by gas station to re-fuel. I just plug in CX-90 PHEV every night, next morning battery is fully charged (I normally just charge to 90%) But the driving experience is the best part of this sporty 3row suv vs family suv. Put this CX-90 PHEV in sports mode, it becomes a different beast, it just takes off when you floor it , the steering is so intuitive, you feel really planted to the road, especially on curvy roads. And you honestly forget this is a 3 row suv. This is a 323 HP suv hybrid PHEV not a Tesla. I test drove a Tesla Y extended range, very nice. But for me the Tesla is so plain inside and the exterior design seems really boring. I needed more interior room for my needs. And to my surprise , Mazda blew me away with interior and exterior design. Plus if you want to save $7500 on CX90 PHEV off MSRP go the leasing route, which I did ! Honestly if you haven’t test driven a CX90 , really should give them a test drive. I’m very happy I did !
From Acura MDX to Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
My son is a new driver... The family Acura MDX has carried us safely on many adventures for well over 180,000 miles and now it is his safe passage for the future.
The “trade-off” is that I have to take on a car payment once again, however, the CX-90 PHEV Prem Plus has not disappointed and has proven to be worth its price tag! We have already taken it on a trip over 500 miles, through … rain and snow with no issues aside from the bumper sensors being temporarily blinded by road spray and dirt. The electric ride is smooth, and the sport mode is useful to get around slow moving vehicles on single lane, country roads (of course in safe passing zones).
I look forward to driving it for years to come, but am admittedly nervous at the level of technology built into the first year vehicle that could pose long-term concerns - time will tell.

Mazda CX-90 vs. Kia Telluride
The Telluride has been a class leader since it debuted back in 2020 and it doesn't look as though it will relinquish that crown anytime soon. It represents a better value than the CX-90 by offering more features for the money and Kia backs it with a generous warranty. The CX-90 is perhaps the most luxurious SUV in the class, but the Telluride isn't far off.
Mazda CX-90 vs. Volkswagen Atlas
The CX-90 and VW Atlas both offer a pleasing mix of comfort and easy-to-use controls. The CX-90 has a power advantage and it's more fuel-efficient and nicer inside the cabin. Going with the VW, though, gets you more cargo room and more spacious third-row seating. It's also less expensive.
Mazda CX-90 vs. Honda Pilot
The recently redesigned Honda Pilot makes waves with its TrailSport model that adds legitimate off-road capabilities, yet it keeps its position as a sensible choice for growing families. The Pilot benefits from several clever storage and usability solutions, including a removable second-row center seat that's unique in the class. The CX-90 distinguishes itself by being more fun to drive and luxurious inside.

FAQ
Is the Mazda CX-90 a good car?
