Biggest surprise of my car life

2025 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Sport 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I am a car guy. After years of owning most high line brands, this time I decided not to pay the ultra premium price, but to get a near premium product. One of my previous favorite brands was Lexus, which similarly overdelivered vs BMW, Volvo, Jaguar, etc. Other than the CX90, my semi finalist was a three row Lexus TX hybrid (a version of Toyota Grand Highlander). At almost $80K, it had … some disappointing aspects, particularly interior quality and handling. Plus ho hum styling. My CX90 aced those details, was better on fit and finish, and cost $25K less! And drives like a German performance SUV. If the CX90 reliability is up to par, this car may be, dollar for dollar, one of the smartest car decisions I’ve ever made.

2025 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
Right from picking up my new CX-90 from the dealership the problems began. First it was a radar sensor error code which didn't allow the adaptive cruise or lane centering to work- that required 3 visits to the dealership to get fixed. Now the adaptive cruise works but is pointless as any slight turn in the road the vehicle will slam on the brakes. Transmission started jumping shortly … after, no fix available. Steering wheel locks up on the highway requiring you to use force to steer the other way (2 visits to service with no fix), heated seats stopped working, and the list goes on. I ended up returning the lease early as I couldn't fathom the idea of driving it for 3.5 more years. Mazda you can do better. You make great vehicles but why wouldn't you have put more effort and quality control into the CX-90? Unfortunate because it's one of the best looking 3 row SUVs!

2025 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
We got a lemon. Trying to get rid of it now. Check engine light on and Mazda takes forever to try to fix anything. Throws codes left and right. Recalls out the wazoo. We will just call this one a loss.

2025 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
25+ visits to our dealer over 8 months and only 3300 miles on it as purchased new. We had every recall it had actually occur and got every one of these corrected at dealer through several visits. Big issue, 100% dead 12v battery in driveway. Over MANY visits, our dealer put in a 3rd new 12V starter battery since the new battery was still failing in only 3-4 weeks of use. Finally on 3rd … battery, dealer and Mazda tech figured out the battery was being grossly undercharged due to a software issue. That finally got fixed at the expense of far too many returns to the dealer for this serious issue. After all of this, the loud and annoying low battery alert and dash warnings still continued to occur almost every day, even with sufficient driving done daily. Dealer said it was normal, ya, right. We had had enough of this Hybrid in only 8 months of ownership and we felt we could not depend upon it for a long trip and traded it in at a $10K loss for another make of vehicle that was gas-only. That gas only vehicle has performed flawlessly with zero returns to our dealer for anything. The 2025 Mazda CX-90s are again being recalled for many issues. This model should be avoided until Mazda figures out a lot of things it should have before releasing this new model in 2024. The CX-90 is sure to blemish what was a clean record in general for Mazda. The CX-90s are a dud, period! Avoid or flip a coin on any decent reliability, if you choose to get one! Also, consider that the much greater technical complexity of using a Hybrid over a gas only vehicle, may come at cost of reliability over time. While our gas-only SUV does not get the higher MPG that our CX-90 had, it was greatly worth getting a vehicle we could depend upon 100% of the time and know it would not let us down when we needed to rely on it.
