The 2024 Lexus RZ boasts an exceptionally nice cabin and a smooth ride. It's mostly what you'd expect from a Lexus EV. However, the RZ's short range and relatively high price are significant drawbacks. Many other luxury EVs are more compelling overall.Read full review

Overview

Lexus has a deep roster of hybrid vehicles, but the RZ is the only fully electric model in the lineup. It debuted last year and is related to the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, but with Lexus' brand of luxury and refinement. In terms of size, it fills the gap between the smaller Lexus NX and larger RX. As is the case with other Lexus vehicles, the RZ favors comfort over performance and comes with a generous list of driver assistance features.

Edmunds spotlight: More range from the new RZ 300e version
Lexus has added a new entry-level RZ 300e trim for 2024. It only has one electric motor and front-wheel drive, compared to the RZ 450e, which has two motors and all-wheel drive. There are two advantages to the new 300e. First off, EPA-estimated range on a full charge for the 300e is a maximum of 266 miles. That's a significant increase from the RZ 450e, which carries on into 2024 with its max 220-mile estimate. The 300e also costs less, though it isn't as powerful as the 450e.
Competitors to consider
The Tesla Model Y is a very popular choice. It is less expensive and provides more range than the RZ, though it's not as comfortable. From luxury automakers, you should also check out the Audi Q4 e-tron, Genesis GV60 or GV70, and Volvo XC40 Recharge. Finally, Acura has come out with its first EV, the ZDX. Be sure to check out our Expert Rating below to see where the 2024 Lexus RX leads and where improvements are needed.

We drove the 2024 Lexus RZ on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7.5/10
How does the RZ drive? Most noteworthy about the RZ is how much it feels like any other gas-powered Lexus product. Presumably, Lexus intentionally crafted this characteristic to better target its current customer base. Some EVs offer immediate shove when you hit the accelerator pedal, but the RZ has some built-in lag to feel more relaxed. The same can be said of the brakes, which feel more traditional and provide very little slowdown from regeneration. As a result, there's no one-pedal driving setting to allow you to fully come to a stop while just lifting off the accelerator.
The RZ does have decent power when you need it. We tested both a dual-motor RZ 450e and single-motor RZ 300e. At the Edmunds test track, the 450e accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, which is properly quick, tying the Tesla Model Y Long Range. The 300e took 7.4 seconds, which is quite a bit slower than other comparable single-motor SUVs like the Audi Q4 e-tron. Around turns, the RZ's softly tuned suspension means it bobs and moves around more than most luxury EVs. The RZ is best enjoyed as a city commuter.

Comfort
8/10
How comfortable is the RZ? With cushy ride quality and exceptional sound insulation, the RZ is one of the most comfortable options for an electric SUV. Sure, it sacrifices some handling ability but we think the trade is worth it. The front seats are decently comfortable and have powerful heating and ventilation functions. The climate system's heating, however, takes way longer than it should to reach temp — cold mornings will necessitate preheating the cabin or donning a large fluffy sweater until the system wakes up. The available radiant heating panels in the front row are a neat idea but don't provide as much warmth as we'd like.
Interior
8/10

Overall space in both rows doesn't quite match what the Tesla Model Y offers, but it's still great for passengers big and small. Getting in and out of the RZ is easy, with good seat height and door clearance for heads. From the driver's seat, the visibility in all directions is stellar and the seat offers enough adjustability to get comfortable quickly.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? Every RZ comes with the large 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen system that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While a home button would make navigating the system easier, the overall responsiveness is appreciated. We also like the superb sound quality from the optional Mark Levinson audio system; it's worth getting because the standard audio system is unremarkable.
The one area where the RZ needs some work is the advanced driver aids. Most of the systems are annoyingly oversensitive in their warnings, particularly the blind-spot warning and driver attention monitoring. The adaptive cruise and lane keeping systems worked well and were useful in our testing.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? Most of the RZ's interior space is for passengers. The cargo area can hold a Lexus-cited 34.9 cubic feet worth of your things, and the rear seats can split in a 40/60 configuration and the sections fold relatively flat. The space is adequate but nowhere near what a Tesla Model Y can provide, and without a frunk to help out, the RZ's space limitations become evident pretty quickly.
Small-item storage in the cabin is also an issue. The door pockets are too small and the RZ does not have a typical glovebox. Instead, there's an opening beneath the center console that is barely large enough to hold a small purse. Got small children? Installing a child safety seat should be hassle-free, though the seat anchors are marginally less easy to access than those in rivals like the Audi Q4 e-tron.

Range and Efficiency
6/10
How are the range and efficiency? We tested the RZ 450e and RZ 300e, both with 20-inch wheels, and they have an EPA-estimated range of 196 miles and 224 miles, respectively. Other versions of the RZ can go farther but in general the RZ's range is short for a luxury EV. In our real-world Edmunds EV Range Test, we managed 204 miles for the 450e and 245 miles for the 300e. Relative to the rest of the EV field, both results are pretty unimpressive.
Charging speed is decent. At a fast-charging station, the RZ has peak charging power of 150 kW, which should be quick enough for most, though most rivals can accept more power and charge more quickly. On the plus side, the RZ is fairly efficient. In our test, the 450e used 30.7 kWh of energy for every 100 miles of driving, and the 300e used 28.7 kWh/100 miles.

Value
7/10
Is the RZ a good value? Despite a very pleasantly luxurious cabin, it's an uphill battle to justify buying a RZ. Its price is similar to rivals such as the Genesis GV60 and Volvo XC40 Recharge but you're generally getting less range or performance. The RZ has a standard warranty of four years/50,000 miles for basic coverage and six years/70,000 miles for the powertrain. The battery warranty is generous, with coverage for 10 years/150,000 miles. Lexus offers the first year of free maintenance and four years of roadside assistance. You also get the Lexus Reserve program that allows the use of a gas-powered Lexus for 30 days over three years, which is a helpful solution for those concerned about the limited range of an electric vehicle.
Wildcard
7.5/10
The Lexus RZ looks sporty in a sort of generic Lexus way, but it isn't really fun to drive. Most of its appeal comes down to its calm driving experience and solid build quality.
2024 Lexus RZ trim level differences
The 2024 Lexus RZ is available in two models: the new entry-level RZ 300e and the returning RZ 450e. The RZ 300e comes with a single electric motor (201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque) that drives the front wheels. Lexus estimates it will offer 266 miles of range on a single charge (224 miles with 20-inch wheels). The RZ 450e adds a second motor for all-wheel drive with a combined output of 308 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates it will achieve 220 miles of range (196 miles with the 20-inch wheels). Both RZ models are offered in Premium and Luxury trim levels.
Which RZ trim does Edmunds recommend?
Deciding between the new RZ 300e and the RZ 450e will likely come down to your range needs as well your potential need for all-wheel drive. After that, we suggest stepping up to the Luxury trim. For a rather reasonable price, you get several items that enhance comfort along with premium audio and additional driver assist features.

2024 Lexus RZ 300e Premium 4dr SUV w/18" Wheels (electric DD)
This car is a sleeper and glad for it because I negotiated the price (with $10,000 trade in) to about 40% off sticker.
Chose the 300e Premium (18 in wheels) for the greatest range and its roominess (holds ten feet of 2x4s hatch to dash). Plus it's a Lexus and I knew the car company would not likely close up shop due to poor sales.
This car does not disappoint. The exterior styling is … literally a head turner. At least once a week someone stops me to ask about it. The pictures and video don't really capture the great styling details of this car. Luxury, safety, comfort, roominess and every detail was considered in its design and function.
Range mode (up to 64 mph) allows secondary battery to kick in and increase range. So when around town or in traffic I press the button. On my 200 mile-long trips there is really only about 40 miles I can travel without encountering traffic moving less than 65 mph, so this car works well for me. I haven't been able to get the exact range from 10% to 100% but I heard someone got about 282 miles. I seem to be getting closer to 230 or 250 miles even though this model is rated at 262 miles.
Fast charge on 240, so if you need a safety net to get to the destination a one or two hour charge gets you from 50% to 75% charged. Tesla-compatible OEM charger coming out late 2024 early 2025.
If you like to get in your car and drive from Ohio to Oklahoma, then an EV is probably not for you. But if you want a great EV SUV for a good price, all I can say is I love mine and I'm a car person.
The all glass roof on this model does not have a shade. So I crack the windows or park in the shade. Just about all features on this car are customizable, so there are two separate manuals to help. I still can't figure out how to lower the volume of the back-up the warning buzzer but will take it in to see if they can figure it out.
My first EV and for me it was absolutely the right choice. Everything I want and need in one stylish and functional car.
