Driving experience

How does the Lexus RZ drive? Most noteworthy about the RZ is how much it feels like any other gas-powered Lexus product. Presumably, Lexus intentionally crafted this characteristic to better suit its current customer base. Some EVs offer immediate shove when you hit the accelerator pedal, but the RZ has some built-in lag to feel more relaxed. The same can be said of the brakes, which feel more traditional and provide very little slowdown from regeneration. As a result, there's no one-pedal driving setting to allow you to fully come to a stop while just lifting off the accelerator.

The RZ does have decent power when you need it. We tested both a dual-motor RZ 450e and a single-motor RZ 300e. At the Edmunds test track, the 450e accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. That's properly quick and comparable to what you can expect from most other dual-motor luxury electric SUVs. The 300e took 7.4 seconds, however, which is slower than rival single-motor SUVs.

The RZ has one of the most comfortable rides of any EV, but it can feel almost too soft when you're going around corners. Plenty of advanced driver aids are available, but we found them frustrating because they were so conservative in their behavior.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Lexus RZ? Overall space in both rows doesn't quite match class leaders, but it's still great for passengers big and small. Getting in and out of the RZ is easy, with good seat height and door clearance for heads. Got small children? Installing a child safety seat should be hassle-free, though the seat anchors are marginally less easy to access than those in rivals like the Audi Q4 E-tron.

The front seats are decently comfortable, offer sufficient adjustability, and have powerful heating and ventilation functions. The climate system's heating, however, takes way longer than it should to reach the desired temp, and the available radiant heating panels in the front row are a neat idea but don't provide as much warmth as we'd like.

All of the main controls are easy to find and operate. There are real knobs for the volume and the climate controls, located high so you don't need to take your eyes off the road to make changes. The shifter is a bit complicated for no obvious benefit, though once you learn it, it's easy to remember. A few of our staff members found the steering wheel controls a bit confounding, though, and the learning curve will likely be steep for most people.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? Every RZ comes with the large 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen system that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The overall responsiveness is appreciated. We also like the superb sound quality from the optional Mark Levinson audio system; it's worth getting because the standard audio system is unremarkable.

There are plenty of USB-C ports, which is a good thing since during our time with the RZ, the wireless charging pad proved inefficient and unable to keep up with the demands of wireless smartphone connectivity.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The cargo area can hold a Lexus-cited 34.9 cubic feet worth of your things, and the rear seats can split in a 40/60 configuration and the sections fold relatively flat. The space is adequate but nowhere near what a Tesla Model Y can provide, and without a frunk to help out, the RZ's space limitations become evident pretty quickly.

Small-item storage in the cabin is also an issue. The door pockets are too small and the RZ does not have a typical glovebox. Instead, there's an opening beneath the center console that is barely large enough to hold a small purse. Got small children? Installing a child safety seat should be hassle-free, though the seat anchors are marginally less easy to access than those in rivals like the Audi Q4 E-tron.

Is the Lexus RZ a good value? With the addition of a third trim level in 2025, it's not such an uphill battle to justify buying a RZ. The new base trim is far less expensive than the other offerings and makes the shorter range of the RZ more palatable. As with any Lexus, build quality is excellent, so whichever trim you choose, you will get a premium experience.

The RZ has a standard warranty of four years/50,000 miles for basic coverage and six years/70,000 miles for the powertrain. The battery warranty is generous at 10 years/150,000 miles. Lexus offers the first year of free maintenance and four years of roadside assistance.

Range/Efficiency/Charging

How are the range and efficiency? We tested the RZ 450e and RZ 300e, both with 20-inch wheels, and they have an EPA-estimated range of 196 miles and 224 miles, respectively. Other versions of the RZ can go farther, but in general the RZ's range is short for a luxury EV. In our real-world Edmunds EV Range Test, we managed 204 miles for the 450e and 245 miles for the 300e. Relative to the rest of the EV field, both results are pretty unimpressive and could be considered deal-breakers for some buyers.

Charging speed is decent. At a fast-charging station, the RZ has peak charging power of 150 kW, which should be quick enough for most, though most rivals can accept more power and charge more quickly. On the plus side, the RZ is fairly efficient. In our test, the 450e used 30.7 kWh of energy for every 100 miles of driving, and the 300e used 28.7 kWh/100 miles.

X factor

The Lexus RZ looks sporty in a sort of generic Lexus way, but it isn't really fun to drive. Most of its appeal comes down to its calm driving experience and solid build quality. Its meager driving range really keeps it from being a more desirable choice in this competitive segment.

2025 Lexus RZ trim level differences

The 2025 Lexus RZ is available in two models: the entry-level RZ 300e and the RZ 450e. The RZ 300e comes with a single electric motor (201 horsepower and 196 lb-ft of torque) that drives the front wheels. Lexus estimates it will offer 266 miles of range on a single charge (224 miles with 20-inch wheels). The RZ 450e adds a second motor for all-wheel drive with a combined output of 308 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates it will achieve 220 miles of range (196 miles with the 20-inch wheels). Which RZ trim does Edmunds recommend?

We like the RZ 300e. It provides more range than the 450e, which is more valuable and useful than the 450e’s quicker acceleration. The 300e isn't all-wheel-drive, however. If all-wheel drive is a must, we'd suggest the Standard trim level to get the best value.

Edmunds spotlight: A new entry-level trim enhances the RZ's affordability

Lexus previously sold the RZ in two trim levels: Premium and Luxury. For 2025, Lexus has added a third trim level called Standard. Price is the most appealing aspect about it. Compared to a 2024 RZ, the RZ Standard slashes more than $11,000 from the SUV's as-new starting price. Certainly, features were lost to accommodate the price cut, but the Standard RZ still has, in our estimation, a bare minimum of luxury features.

People are nervous about the RZ because they hear a lot about range, but many of the reviews are based on the 450e. I got my RZ 300e with 18" wheels, and the drive range is greater than advertised. We are averaging 4.8 miles per kWh in real-world driving (about 3000 miles), which translates to a range of 348 miles (I drive gently, it should be said).
