2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4dr SUV 4WD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)

Rented a nearly new Cherokee Laredo for a 2-day trip from Cleveland to Sarasota. Two 10+ hour days mostly on the super slab, but some town driving, too. Here is my take: First and foremost, brakes. Weird. After 22 hours of driving, I still couldn't master these brakes. Way too touchy and inconsistent. A light touch on the pedal gives nearly nothing, but a slight increase in pressure causes near panic braking. Lifting doesn't help, and modulating them is difficult. They just seem to have a mind of their own. If this is Jeep's version of smart braking, it's very crude technology. Steering is light and quick. Almost too quick for an SUV, but I adjusted to it. The 8-speed transmission jumps around gears too much. Like the brakes, a light touch on the gas at cruising speed brings nothing. A slight increase in pedal pressure elicits a downshift and a surge in speed, usually more than expected, almost like a turbo kicks in. While I applaud the available power, Jeep needs to work on a transmission and brakes with more linear response. Fuel mileage was good, with an average of 26 mpg over my 1200 mile trip. Cruise control buttons were terrible, having no tactile feel or easy use. I had to look down at the buttons to use the CC. Change them to a stalk so eyes can stay on the road. Cabin noise was low and the body had no squeeks or rattles. Suspension was very good, handling rough roads better than other SUV's I've driven. Visibilty was good, but the rear view mirror seemed a bit small. Lots of plastic in the cabin and the seats look a bit cheap, however, the driver's seat was very comfortable for highway drving (I'm 6 ft, 210 lbs). The distance from the steering wheel to the pedals was, as usual, a bit short. A telescoping wheel would have helped. So all-in-all, 3 stars. It would have been a strong 4 star if not for the braking behavior and jumpy transmission.

Is This a Jeep??

I was hesitant to even test drive a Jeep after how rough a couple of mid- 2000s my family had driven, but I was blown away and was made a respectable offer. In my humble opinion, it so much better than my test drives with a Subaru Forester (Touring Trim) and Honda Pilot (EX-L). I've been very surprised at how smooth and quiet my '23 Jeep GC has been. Truly has a luxury car feel with the Overland trim: ventilated/heated/massage front seats, heads up display, and passenger screen. It reminds me a lot of my 2017 BMW 530i that had all the bells and whistles. So far, it's maintained about 21.5 MPG while driving moderately hard on about 60% highway (would obviously be a lot higher if it weren't insane bumper to bumper rush hour traffic.) Stellantis has done impressive things with Ram trucks, and so far, I'd have to say they've had the magic touch with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
