JD Who?
I don't know where JD Power gets their data, but other than needing a 4.7L vs. a 4.0L, this vehicle is really nice. Had a LED heated seat indicator burn out, fixed ASAP by the dealer. Normal brakes and tires, but otherwise, primo vehicle.
I'm a satisfied customer
I purchased my JGC even after reading all the reviews that are listed here on this site. I did the smart thing, and asked current Jeep owners personally. Sure, there may be problems, but other than the CAM shaft transformer and problems with my stereo (which where all fixed under a few hours with the warrenty I purchased), it has been a fantastic car, comfortable drive, and a good investment. I drive through creek beds and fields often for fishing trips (no problems). But more improtantly, my grandmother is able to get in an out of my JGC with ease. It high enough off the ground so she doesn't have to struggle. Those who have complained w/ reviews, what do you hope to accomplish?

best pick
No problems, this is a great vehicle if you like to ride in style and know that you will be able to "get there" no matter what the conditions are.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
This is the 5th Jeep and 3rd Grand Cherokee we've owned (1987 thru 2001) and all have been excellent vehicles. Mechcanical reliability (all had the long proven 4.0L engine) has been outstanding. On the 2001 LTD I did have some front brake rotor vibration at about 30,000 mi, but the entire assemblies were replaced under warranty and no problems in the 16,000 mi since. This car is both sharp looking, very comfortable and tough. It;s the best 4wd vehicle I have driven in snow (Maine winters). The 1998 Laredo I gave to my daughter is still going strong at 150,000+ with only brakes, tires and shocks replaced.
Don't do It!
This car is by far the worst quality new car I have ever owned. Over a three and one half year ownership, I have had more problems with this car than my 1964 Austin Healy Sprite that I owned in 1966. Most of the problems occurred after the warranty period elapsed. However, there were a host of annoying problems even during the warranty period. With only 47k miles on it, I have replaced a rear window wiper motor (twice), been unable to get my memory seats to work (ever), replace a heating system blower motor, replaced a 'split' power steering line, completely replaced all brake elements, replaced the radiator and associated parts, replaced all four shock absorbers, etc.
Great Entry SUV w/a few nec. upgrades
The Laredo w/leather and heated seats, Infinity Gold sound package, selec trac, moon roof, and cd chngr is a great buy and drives nicely. The upgraded 235 65 17 tires are hard to find cheaply. The optional 245's are better on the SUV in Ohio climates. For the money, the Laredo with upgrade options is a great vehicle and you dont need to pay for the "limited" markers unles a V8 is absolutely nec. Laredo does have a V8 option with out the Limited price.
We love it
We've owned our '01 Limited for almost two years now. Had warranty work done for the brake rotors and the driver side heated seat. Dealer service was excellent. I've owned 4x4's for many years and this one is top notch. We have the Up-Country package, which is handy for the off-road stuff that this rig is suberb at! The AWD in snow has a different feel that takes some getting used to, but it gets you where you want to go. Our Jeep is very solid and fun to drive as well as having some nice luxury touches. You can spend much less for an SUV, but then again, what the heck do you work so hard for?
Bad Brakes & Tranny
Had brakes in for repair several times. Finally had new rotors installed by brake specialist (they claimed Jeep should have had a recall because of original brake quality). Just had the transmission replaced at 89,000 ($3900). Have been driving all my vehicles for last 40 years over 100,000 miles and never had to replace transmission.
Jeep Should be embarrassed
Sad to say but my Jeep is the worst quality new car I have ever owned. Over a three and one half year of ownership the money just seems to bleed from my bank account. Most of the problems occurred after the warranty period elapsed. However, there were a host of annoying problems even during the warranty period. With only 54k miles on it, I have replaced the blender blower unit, the main electrical unit, A/C cooling problems, and have had 4 sets of brakes. I cannot begin to count the number of times this vehicle has spent time in the shop. Why can't the US make quality cars on par with Asia? Never again will I purchase a Jeep.
Take your chances
You are really taking your chances by buying a 2001 Grand. The build quality is terrible. Problems I have had: steering pump and steering column needed to be replaced. Window regulator broken. Electronics nightmare! Gas tank leak. Exterior Jeep logos oxidize along with paint. Do yourself a favor and get an extended warranty. I really think I might have been unlucky by buying this particular Jeep. I've owned two in the past and have never had problems.
Can you say bigger rotors?
Got this car new in 2001, and it is by far the most fun car to drive I've ever had. I love it. Too bad, however, there are so many repairs required. I have had to turn or replace rotors three times now, and this seems to be common among Jeep owners. But there have been other strange problems: Bad lock motor in the hatch, seized lock cylinder in the ignition, bad thermostat, replaced radio, and I just had to replace the driver's seat frame ($400) as it broke free of the mounting riser. I have NEVER had to fix a driver's seat before. This could have been a perfect car, but with horrible mileage (13 mpg city) and chronic bad brakes, it's hard to look past all the other problems.
honest assessment
Has been very reliable with 116k on it now and runs like new, but has been well maintained. Like others, have had problems with the brakes, but have replaced only once although the problem was extreme. Get great gas mileage for an suv, averaging 18-20 mpg with 4.0L and 4x4. Very capable off-road. Has been used heavily for towing and other truck responsibilities. Overall, not bad. Certainly better than my other domestic brand experiences.
Owner
It drives really wonderful, I really don't have any compliants.
Grand Cherokee #2
This is my second jeep grand cherokee and I have not ever had a problem mechanically or otherwise.....My first one had over 70,000 miles when I traded it for the new one and it was never in the shop. This one has over 40,000 and it too has never been in the shop.
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
Really only one problem with this vehicle. Brakes...twice back into shop for adjustment. All other aspects seem very good...no other problems whatsoever.
Satisfied After 20 Months
I purchased this used in June 05 with 59,500 miles. The ONLY problem I have had with this Jeep is that I've replaced the battery twice in 20 months. I drive with my headlights on "auto" and I'm told this drains the battery. Other than that, I'm extremely happy with it. The seats are VERY comfortable. I usually drive 80 on the highway and gas mileage is around 17 mpg but I also have the 4.7 L engine and I put larger tires on it. I've gone mudding in this Jeep and taken it on the beach and still no problems. All electronics still work and no brake problems. I change the oil every 3K miles, however I am not sure what the previous owners did.
I absolutely love my Jeep Grand Cherokee
I have owned it for 25,000 and have NOT have any problems. The body is tight, and the suspesion allows it to drive over anything. I took if offroad on Pismo Beach a few times. Other 4x4s were either getting stuck or drivers had to get out and lower the tire pressure to move. Not the Jeep.
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4WD Limited
Very quick & powerful V-8 engine. Handles well in all conditions. Very comfortable leather seats. Had to get one software update to correct the transmission slamming into / out of gear at low speeds. The update fixed it. The driver's side heated seat is broken but still under warranty. The rear cup holder sucks and gets stuck all the time.
If I can save just one person from buyin
Piece of crap. A/C went at 26K, the regional Chrysler/Jeep rep offered to pay half as a good will gesture. At 26K? Brakes went at 25K, same thing. Radio goes out at any given time. Had to replace seat warmer @ $400 at 45K. Mirrors will occasionaly reset themselves at weird angles when parked. I get in car - side mirrors are aimed at the ground. Rear end piece just went at 65K...yup, a real well built machine - NOT!!! I will NEVER buy a Jeep again.
clunker
The drivers seat is uncomfortable.Jeep could take a lesson in seat design from Honda. There is a "clunk" in the rear suspension. I've had it checked out several times. It's blamed on a broken shock, but the shocks are fine. The sound stops when there is about 100lbs placed over the rear end in the cargo area. Also if a light duty shock is used.
6 years and still stong
I purchased this vehicle new and it has been one of my favorites. The styling and ride are great and the reliability has been quite good. Like all GCs of this year, the front brakes were horrible but once the solution was found, I can't complain one bit. The answer to the brake problem is to replace the pads and calipers with a brake kit from the Jeep dealer. Basically it's the same setup found on the 2003 model! I've had this vehicle on long trips and off-road in the woods of Pennsylvania. It has performed very well. Would I purchase another one? You bet!
Jeep GC Love/Hate
The abilities of this car lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately, during the 50k miles I owned it I experienced pretty much all of the problems other people have reported. The transmission was repaired once (wouldn't shift from 2nd to 1st after coming to a stop), warped front brake rotors twice, the hatch lock motor replaced, a window regulator replaced and the driver's seat frame broke on the left side where it bolts to the floor. I bought an extended service policy that took care of the most expensive repairs. The steering wheel doesn't look or feel centered with the seat and you replace the entire door panel if you want a factory replacement for a worn arm rest pad ($400 part).
Well Done
Love it. and i would definitely buy another one. Don't miss out on driving a Jeep.
Jeep Limited
This is an all around great car. It has a V8 and drives great. The leather seats are comfortable, the moon roof is great and everything is awesome. I have had no problems. The limited looks great. I love the body style.
2001 Grand Cherokee limited 2wd 4.7l
This could have been one of my favorite vehicles ever. With all the bells and whistles our limited is quite comfortable and the 4.7l v8 is strong in a midsize suv. Rear seats are cramped for adults but fine for children. Build quality is poor. I've had $1600 of work to replace all the a/c blending doors. I've also replaced driver and passenger window regulators as well as one tail light assembly and both headlights due to pitted lenses and driver seat heat element.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
This is our fifth Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. We have found the vehicles to be very dependable. We have driven on long trips through the Arizona desert in August. We have driven in the cold Nebraska winters. They perform wonderfully in all situations.
great jeep
28000 miles and only one problem. The heated seat on the driver side doesn't work and I have yet to take it to the dealer for repairs under the warranty. I have the selectmatic transmission that I have not seen on any other Jeep Grand Cherokees, but I am glad I do. It gives me the option of 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. It appears others have had trouble with the Quadramatic Trans.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is not so bad
I have had no problems with Jeep other than the fuel pump went out the first month. It is a 2001 Grand Cherokee.

It wasn't bad at first
This Jeep was a dream until I found out that this jeep lunges for no apparent reason, it jerks, and i have taken it in and no one can really tell me a specific reason why it does this, I would not reccomend this jeep, not unless the manufacturer takes a look at what is causing this lunge
Nothing But Problems
I have had my 2001 Cherokee since Dec 2001. I have replaced the rotors 4 times. The ignition also died at 40K miles and had to be replaced. Overall it has been in the shop 13 times for mechanical problems. Engine also has problems starting when it rains. ALthough the dealer can't find the problem. Also the back seats flip up when you stop quickly. Very nice when you have a small child seat belted in the backseat. Also the dealer we bought this from does not stand behind their cars at all.
the "Jeugo"
The moulded interior of the 2002 JGC Laredo reminds me of a child's cheap plastic toy. The driver's side is so cramped that I can barely keep from stepping on my own feet. The glove compartment is so small that the only thing that will fit in it is a pair of gloves. And finally, the car vibrates in idle.
Very good overall, brakes problematic
The beauty of this vehicle is it is relatively small for an SUV with the power of a V8 and 6300lb towing capacity. You won't find another vehicle that can pull as well that drives like a car when you aren't pulling. Things I don't like: front brake rotors will warp under normal use every 10-15K miles and will need resurfacing to prevent shimmy. Jeep's warranty on this is 6K, I think. Also think front seats could be a bit firmer. Poor fuel economy when towing about 5500 lbs---about 9 mpg. Rear end makes a whirring noise when moving very slowly (5 mph or less), but is normal. Other than brakes, no real problems.
Jeep Rocks!
This is the 3rd Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited I've purchased. The only reason I've bought three is that I like to update the Jeep every so often. I had a 1993, 1998, and now a 2001. Before I bought my 1st & 2nd Jeep, I test-drove pretty much every SUV available. By far, the Jeep's reliability and comfort are the main reasons why I will continue to update my Jeep with another Jeep. My other car is a BMW and if I could only have one, it would be the Jeep Gr Ch LTD. It has all the options I wanted and the price was right. It's a great SUV.
Do Not BUY
A reliability nightmare. Three fuel pumps have been replaced. Complete transmission overhaul @ 69,000K, heated seats do not work, brake problems, etc. etc. I should know better--had same problems on my 1999 which I just sold. Jeep can not build a reliable vehicle and Carmax is so busy because of all the needed repairs it takes two weeks to get an appointment so they can attempt repairs.
King of SUVs
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is the one SUV that all the competitors fear. It has tremendous off road capability. I have taken it on beach sand with heavy ruts and loose drifting sand. No problem at all. It can handle anything. Try that with the fake SUVs put out by the competitors. Who knows more about four wheel drive than Jeep? My wife drives this one, and she absolutely loves it. (She owns Ford stock, but we bought this new. We also have a Liberty).
Grand Cherokee rocks!
Bought the Limited in 99, has been great vehicle ever since. Not one major problem to report.
7+ years & still going strong
We bought the 01 JGC new and now with 86k miles let our college age son buy into it. Loaded Laredo w/leather, 4l i6 with Selectrac. It's been very reliable: of course we replaced the brake pads/rotors @ 35k and 85k mi (2nd time was planned). Also did seat heaters 3 times but under ext warranty. (liked it enough we just bought a new 07 similarly equipped but 4.7v8 for towing). I follow sched a maintenance & have not had problems, our mechanic says the i6 Selectrac is best SUV ever. I would have rated this one higher except it's now compared to the new 07, not really fair.
Running Fine
I have had the vehicle for over 20K miles and have taken it to Iceland and Hawaii without incident. I had to replace the automatic rear hatch lock and the battery (both known problems). However, maintenance and parts was rather simple. The vehicle performs when I need a 4x4 but looks at home stylingwise in town. I am averaging 13.5 mpg in town. I wish that was a little better. I would suggest regular maintenance intervals be met and probably a front brake upgrade and airflow filter kit. Other than that, good used vehicle!
It's always something, but it's always going.
You'll have to fix it fairly frequently, but as long as you make the repairs, these things can get up to 250k+ miles. The 4.0-liter I6 just keeps on going, but other issues pop up, like bad fans, melty electronics, and self-lowering windows. Interior holds up pretty well and is tough. Body holds up well, and this thing has more than enough torque. Sometimes the transmission searches a bit, and it can feel like the Flintstones' car when you stop suddenly, but it'll get you where you need to go and do it well.

Cherokee
So comfortable!!
Never Again (I'd give 0 stars if I could)
I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd in 2001. It was a comfortable ride, especially on the highway, when it was not in then shop. I got rid of it because it was so unreliable. After 15 months and 19,000 miles, the transmission went out. During the 6 years I kept it, I replaced the transmission (under warranty), 3 window motors, the rear lift supports, front dash speakers, and brake rotors (at 30K miles). I got rid of it when I discovered that the passenger HVAC control was stuck on cool. I was not willing to fix the HVAC damper. I sold it at 98K miles. I will never buy another Jeep/Chrysler product. The local dealership in Houston where I bought the vehicle and initially has it serviced (River Oaks) was absolutely terrible. They took forever to repair it and the dealership management and owner were cavalier when I expressed my concerns about reliability re: the transmission failure. Their suggestion was that I buy a n ew one.

If you want a true SUV this model will plow through snow and trails with ease.High ground clearance is a plus, feals solid driving.
24 years old and still a great ride
Owned and loved this Jeep for over 24 years.
best suv out there!!!!
couldn't be happier with my Grand Cherokee. Looked at Acura, M-B's, Lexus, and Land Rover. Had a Explorer- hated it. The Jeep is the best price and performance wise hands down!!! Don't be fooled, there really is only one...
Jeeps suck!
I should have been careful and bought a Japanse Suv. The MPG sucks and so does the ride. The engine is very weak and build quality is poor.
Great Ride!
I have almost 30K miles on my Jeep. No major problems and excellent dealer service.
