Brakes, Drivetrain and Electrical Woes
I have had many makes of automobiles Japanese, German and American but this is the most problematic of them all. I purchased a Limited 4X4 with all the goodies, V8, Quadratrac etc,etc... The brakes have been among the worst I have ever owned needing replacement before 15K miles. The transmission has a mind of it's own, clunking off downshifts at slow speed and upshifting harshly when cold. The electrical system has been a nightmare randomly flashing the headlights when the vehicle is unattended. I should have done my homework before I purchased this vehicle. Shame on me!
it's a chore just to get in the car
i loved my Jeep when I first leased it. Now, four years in, i hate it. The automated door locks malfunctioned 1 month after my warranty was up but the service department said it wouldnt have been covered anyway. So it's $350 to fix it. Plus there is only ONE key entry on the car. So after four years of owning it the remote entry doesn't work so just getting in the thing is a chore. I have had brake problems and need new rotors again. I will never buy a Jeep again and can't wait to get out of this one. Both my dealer and Chrysler have been unconcerned with my complaint.

FENG SHUI
I believe it's important to endure in a vehicle that makes you feel 'at home' and suits your taste. If more people truly enjoyed their interiors they would'nt be in such a mad rush to get the #&!! out of it. Instead they would enjoy their ride better and take it easier on the roads.
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Fun to drive, very sound vehicle. Great styling
An honest opinion of the 2000 Gr. Cherok
With every Jeep when you 1st get it you probably will have to bring it in at lesat 4x for warranty work in the 1st 6 months. However after that its ok.
JEEP = JUNK
Warning! Jeeps are junk! I purchased a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 V6 and had nothing but problems with it. First the braker rotors had to be resurfaced, then the fuel pump, then the passenger side window motor and finally the door locks. All of this within 17,450 miles! This should never happen to a new car with that few miles (Poor quality control).
Replaced too many parts in the 1.5 years
So far I have replaced Water pump, 2 window motors, brakes and air conditioner compressor. Mechanic says these are all known bad parts!! Jeep should reacall some of these if they are know to have bad parts. WOULD NEVER BUY A JEEP AGAIN!!!
2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE
THIS VEHICLE IS VERY DEPENDABLE AND SUPER COMFORABLY TO RIDE IN. EVERYONE HERE AT WORK PRAISES IT FOR ITS BEATY. I KEEP IT WASH AND CLEAN. I AM PROUD TO BE THE OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE.
Trust the reviews
I wish I would have believed the reviews before I bought my 2000 Grand Cherokee. Nice car but things just keep breaking. Like everybody else; door-locks, brakes, weather stripping, and fuel pump. If you buy this car I GUARANTEE you will be spending money on stipid repairs.
STAY AWAY
5 TIMES BACK TO THE DEALER ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,ROLLER COASTER OFFERS A BETTER RIDE,STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!
Very Happy
I have a very good lease deal on this vehicle. At the time, I was looking at the Passat. Across the street was a Jeep dealership. I went over and got out with a new Jeep. It costs me $100 less then the Passat, and there is NO comparison between these two. This is a much better familiy vehicle. The only thing going to Passats favor is fuel economy.
Beware before Getting This Jeep!!
I bought this truck I loved it in the beginning. Its approx a little over a year and it has done nothing but given me problems. The first thing was the driver side window motor and regulator. That was $330 alone. A couple months later the coil pack was going bad (only four out of the eight) that was very pricey. Couple months later my steering wheel fluid was leaking. Next my radiator was leaking, had to replace that thermostat, etc. Then couple months later got a tune up thinking this would help mileage and help it drive somewhat better. The next day the truck shut off while in park. Thinking mite be fuel pump is why car keeps shutting off (due to bad gas months ago) way to much money for maintenance!
3rd JGC & 1Jeep Cherokee
My first was an 88 Jeep Cherokee Limited, the next three were JGC 94, 96 & 2000. Only problem with any of them was AC coil on '96 at 65,000 miles. Had one set of rotors go bad AFTER I had a tire company turn them(ground down). If the rotors warp or need turning, just purchase new ones instead. $10 to turn and only $40 for a new one. Rotors never seem to last after having them turned down, just spring for the new rotors and new brake shoes. Their easy to put on yourself and the entire job will cost $100 and a couple of hours for one set if wheels...as opposed to paying a mechanic shop $300-500.
LOVE IT !!!!
I OWN A 2000 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE AND I LOVE IT!! HOWEVER I TOO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE WINDOW MOTORS GOING OUT. IT IS A COMFORTABLE VEHICLE, HOWEVER THEY ARE OVER PRICED.
Waste of money
I have had many problems, Front Brake rotors have been replaced 3 times, power doors do not work, front doors never open with remote or key, must open rear door and reach in front to opeen either front door.
I love my Jeep!
I have had no problems with my Grand Cherokee. I love this vehicle! The only drawbacks are not-so-great gas mileage and higher insurance rates.
DISASTER!
I have had tremendous problems with this car. The rotors are terrible. I have had them turned 5 times in two years. I will soon need to totally replace them. There are countless other problems that I have had with this vehicle. Worst craftmenship I have ever seen in a vehicle. I have had two Jeeps prior to this one that did not have problems. I would have bought another after this but will never again buy a Jeep considering the hosing I got on this dud! These need to be recalled (at least for the brakes)
Them's The Brakes....
This is my fifth Jeep product and the only one I have been less than pleased with. Today I had my brake rotors resurfaced for the second time (22k miles) which were shaking the vehicle when I braked. Transmission whines at highway speeds and drivers window clicks going up. Air conditioning is just ok, nothing like the old Grand Wagoneers and the wheels won't stay clean more than a day. I have tried to love this vehicle but can only manage to just like it ok. Have friends with similar Grand Cherokees and similar problems. My wifes 2001 Cherokee Limited is vastly superior in quality if not ride and comfort.
Bought used and still happy...
Picked up used about a year ago...previously owned by a little old lady who put on 60K in 2&1/2 yrs. Paid 2K under Edmund's TMV. Happy with the quiet, subtle ride 13K later. Avg 17.5- 19.0 MPG per tank, mostly hwy miles. Engine 4.0 powerfull enough (no towing). Comfortable leather seats and fantastic 200 watt Infinity CD/Cassette. Only quality issue has been broken passenger door hinge, wouldn't open - $200.00. Only minor pulsating on braking. Found local repair shop to perform factory suggested maintenance for cheap.
does good off road
I bought this for a family vehicle and it has done very well it was a 1 owner when purchased @94,000 miles. It now has 121,000 and has had no Major problems I think this is due to the owner before me taking care of it I have had to replace the radiator and idle air control (the iac was causing it to die at idle) and its due for a tune up I do all my own work so no labor to pay for and most of the time after a little searching I can find the new parts I need cheap oil gets changed every 3k miles with mobile1 10w-30 its had it share of offroad and did well overall a decent vehicle if its taken care of I think I love it and would drive on or offroad anywhere
Mixed Bag
Great truck. Tranny issues have soured me a bit. Gas milage has been ok. 4.0 litre engine under performs. If you can, get the eight.
This Jeep Saved My Life
I purchased a 1999 Jeep Grd Laredo in 11/02. In 12/02,5 weeks after owning it, a 4-dr Ford F-350 ran a red light and hit my little Jeep. The air bags did exactly as they are suppose to do. They inflated instantly and deflated just as fast. I have no visible injuries from the air bag, the seat belt or the truck. I just have muscle and back pain. This Jeep saved my life, but unfortunatley I could not save it's life. I bought it for $16,100.00 and it had a total damage of $16,539.+. I will always miss that 1999 but I have replaced it with a 2000 (same color of course). I highly recommend this truck.
Luxury Price, not so luxury quality
This vehicle is fun to drive, it handles well, has nice part time 4x4 option -- great for the rain. However it's not reliable, rotors, and pads must be changed to aftermarket asap (expensive). Sensors, relays, and windows quit working way before you'd expect. And I've had serious electrical issues which cause the vehicle to quit while I'm driving (dangerous). Dealerships seems to provide little product support, and manufacturer takes little responsibility. These problems seem persistent regardless of how I take care of my vehicle, or how I drive it. Oh, the fuel gauge and rear gate lock have also quit working.
Transmission/Rotor problems
Generally, the vehicle has been great, very few problems. However, approximately every 16,000 miles the rotors need to be turned due to warping. Dealer says that this is normal and should be done annually. My response was BS. I have 39,000 miles on it and I'm about due for anouther rotor job. Transmission, when shifting into overdrive, seems to slip. I've notice for the last few months the engine reving up when it shifts. Started watching the tach and it also indicates that the engine revs up when it shifts into OD.
2000 GCherokee
I have over 100,000 miles on my GCherokee. Biggest maintenance was replacement of the water pump. No oil buring, runs great on highway. Secret of longevity is probably the basic in- line six cylinder engine. It's bullet proof.
Fun to drive
I bought a used Grand Cherokee about 3 months ago and have had absolutely no problems with it. I bought the V8 and only get about 18 MPG but sold my 3/4 ton suburban for it so the gas mileage is great! Very fast with the V8, have gotten up to 115 in this with virtually no shaking or noises of any kind. I needed a mountain goat for the winter so I can get up the mountain for Skiing and have no concerns with powering through feet of fresh powder.
Will not own another Jeep...
Bad experience all around. Horrible wind noise behind driver/passenger area. Warped luggage racks (fixed under warranty.) Horrible service from dealer. I was actual told that oil seeping from my engine was "normal" even though no one else seems to have the same problem. The steering stabilizer bolt almost came out. The track arm bolt DID come out (fixed at my expense. Even with an extended warranty.) Alternate dealership replaced oil pan gasket but did not tighten all the bolts when reassembling oil pan. Horrible resale. Overall poor fit/finish/quality for the price paid.
2000 jeep laredo
This has been a great car. The only problem in 3 years was a problem with the cruise control that was fixed while they changed my oil.
Fun Vehicle
I love my Jeep. Has provided style and comfort while driving with few problems. It is versatile and is a great traveling vehicle or running errands.
Mostly great things
Vehicle four wheel drive is great. I keep up with my brother in off-raod situations where he is driving a wrangler. My only issue was an engine problem that needed four trips to fix. As it turned out, they replaced the head. It has been great ever since. As for everybody having the brake problems, as long as it is still under warranty, they should be replaced by the dealer. Jeep came out with a new system for these vehicles to stop the rotor problems. Both a friend of mine and myself took our vehicles back to the Jeep dealership and complained aobut them. They replaced the brake system with out any further questions.
Great Car, Off-road/On-road
The Jeep Grand Cherokee, is a nice little vehicle. It has the Quadratrac II, and can really pick-up with a v8. Adding a K&N filter also helps with it, and all around is a great car.
my jeep
I have a 2000 Jeep grand Cherokee limited 4.7l v8 efi and I love it. I have a supercharger on it, k&n cold air intake, throttle body, throttle body spacer, Hooker headers, and flowmaster exhaust, streetglow neons underneath and inside. And inside I have 3 jl audio 12'' subs with 2 1,000 Watt amps.
Good for me..
Other than the fact that changing out the rear two spark plugs on the engine is a bit of a nightmare...and that a differential case gasket began to leak...the Grand Cherokee has been flawless. Very stable on rainy, wet streets, good to excellent acceleration and plenty of room for 5. Interior has held up very well...no problems there. All power options continue to work without problem. Fit and finish good for an SUV. Overall...one of the best Jeeps I have owned and driven (of 5 so far).
Your get out what you put in...
Picked up used, pre-owned by a little old lady...really! Recently took care of 60K maintenance at independent dealership, saved 100%-175% off of dealership service quotes. Absolutely love this vehicle! All options except V8, heated seats, and digital heat/ac. Better than Ford & Chevy SUV's (many experiences w/both) in numerous areas. 2000 and forward has been much better for these vehicles. Take care of your vehicle, including ALL maintenance as suggested, don't drive like a teenager, and your vehicle will take care of you.
2000 Grand Cherokee LTD Makes the Grade
With its good sound system, and sun roof it is an excellant driving vehicle in both winter driving and summer use, in Nebraska
Not as good as I hoped!
Negatives: Rear View not very good Poor Front Brake Design (replaced twice) Poor Power Door Lock Design (replaced 3 times) Poor Fuel Pump Design (replaced once) Would not recommend vehicle to family or friends This is my third Jeep I've owned and will not own another one.
STAY AWAY FROM JEEPS!
Oh, where to start! I've had this POS for 4 months and have had it to the dealership 6 times! Brake rotors warp, Steering column clicks, sunroof when opened makes a rattling sound, the Jeep pulls to the right, big time! The dealer tells me this is normal and that it's the "crown on the road", WHATEVER! This vehical is the WORST vehical I've ever owned. Not only will I never buy a Jeep, I'll never buy a Chrysler after being dicked around by the dealership so much, they were very painful to deal with!
Hmm. Brake problem
Unless you own a company that makes the rotors, this vehicle may be too expensive. I love jeep vehicles, I own a 97 wrangler with no problems, but my 2000 Grand Cherokee has been in the shop for brakes 3 times (12K, 16K 27K) Plus we have started to notice a driveline howl, which the dealer says is normal. Jeep should stick to building just wranglers!
Another great Jeep for our lineup
Have numerous XJ Cherokee's that have proven themselves time and again for reliability and capability. Was hesitant to add a Yuppie Jeep to the lineup, mainly because the creature comforts kinda took away from the hardcore Jeeping mentality that we have. But all in all, this has proven us wrong. Who says you can't have an extremely reliable vehicle AND be comfortable at the same time?
Transmission Troubles
The transmission is terrible. It has been at the dealers numerous times because it hestitates and slams into gear. Everytime the dealer "fixes it", the problem worsens, to the point of slamming into gear 2x between 15-20 mph producing a bucking effect. The ackward shifting is more dominant when the car is warmed up & between 15-30 mph. It also has much difficulty switching from Park to Reverse. Although the ride (suspension) is very comfortable, it is offset when you are bumping into different gears. Since the transmission is a costly repair that the dealer's "speciality" mechanics can't handle I wouldn't recommend this vehicle.
Never Again...
We knew we were rolling the dice when we bought this used vehicle based on the reviews. Two weeks after purchasing the vehicle, the a/c started to blow warm air on a road trip. Dealer could not find a problem. Door locks broke soon after. Dealer wanted $370 to fix. Car vibrates above 65 mph. Dealer seems unconcerned about providing solutions to the customer. We have only put 6,500 miles on this car in 10 months. We have traded this car in for a foriegn model. I will never buy another JEEP vehicle again. Build quality is awful and customer service is pathetic!!
Brake problem with this Jeep
This jeep has been in the shop at least 6 times in 2.5 years. Brakes are the big issue. We have had the front rotors surfaced 3 times in 30K miles. We know two other friends who have Grand Cherokees both with brake problems similar to ours. Chrysler will not warranty after 12K miles. They say it is a wear issue and they are not responsible. My wife drove a Ford Tempo for over 100K miles without touching the brakes. We will not buy another jeep/chrysler/MB due to the poor customer service. The customer service reps have actually told us to go buy other brands because they do not want our business. Also had the power windows repaired/replaced twice.
Disappointed
very good exterior design but not high quality materials : leather seats showed quickly as "used" for example. Car not stable in turns, even at 25mph, my kids complain of being pushed to the sides when I turn. Greatly disappointed as I expected more in terms of quality. Had to replacve brakes/rotors twice in 2 years.
Figured they would have fixed it by now
I have a JGC with only 34,000. It has been in for service consistantly for the alignment, but the dealer says there is nothing wrong, every Jeep does pull to the right, it has what they call a Natural Drift. Well I have to hold on tight down the highway since it wants to go right all the time. Breaks need to be redesigned, controls, seats are good. Whinning noise in from the drivetrain, but heard that's norm, well I am not sure I would buy this one again. Thinking about writing a letter to Chrysler how dissapointed I am.
I Hate This Jeep!
When I bought this truck, I loved it. Since then it has been one thing after another. It started shaking and I found out that the coil packs had to be changed. That wasn't too bad. But then my heater coils and blower motor had to be replaced. That was quite expensive. I can say that it has never left me on the side of the road. That's a plus, but I will never buy one again.
What a shame
It's too bad. After owning a 1990 Cherokee Pioneer, I was so excited to finally move up to a Grand Cherokee Limited. I loved the looks (except for the droopy rear-view of the gas tank), and the V-8 really moves. I loved this car. The shame of it is that I am now on a first name basis with the entire service staff of my dealer. Even worse, I am also familiar with a private shop because for all the items that were "excluded in the warranty". I don't have room to list all the problems. I'm glad I leased this car. I love to drive it, but reliability will make me return it. I couldn't imagine owning this car outside of a warranty.
NEVER AGAIN
This is my first and LAST Diamler/Chrysler product! The tires went bald at 25000 under normal driving conditions, with regular rotating. The brakes had to be done at 27000. Soon after both window motors in the front doors had to be replaced at my expense. Then the automatic headlight switch went bad causing my battery to be drained, had to purchase new $150 switch and battery. Most recently the back left door automatic locking mechanism is not working. I'm a military Officer and proud American but will never again buy a Domestic vehicle, my $11,000 97 Nisan Sentra has never had a problem and it has power everything! Don't say I didn't warn you!
After 4 1/2 years, we traded it in
I enjoyed my Jeep the 4 years we had it. But like another reviewer said, make sure you can afford to maintain the vehicle. I loved driving this car, I always felt safe in it. One problem it seemed with mine was that I always needed new tires. I think I had at least 4 flat tires the years we had it. Not including buying two new sets of tires. The speakers in the top of the dash blew after my husband turned the stereo up way too loud. Finally the radiator and fan blew, then the water pump twice, and the thermostat. (also had to get a new motor for the driver window) Gave up after that.
Never Again
My first Jeep Grand Cherokee was a 1997 model with the V8. It was a wonderful vehicle except for the gas mileage. When my lease came up I opted for the new and improved version, a 2000 model. This vehicle has been in the shop more times than my previous 3 vehicles combined. The service staff knows my name when I walk up to the counter. I complained enough that Chrysler put new front rotors on my vehicle at 37,000 miles. Other problems to note: power windows, keyless entry forgetting codes, vehicle not starting due to computer system,....I could go on and on. I will never buy another Chrysler product!
Don't Buy One
This has been the worst vehicle we have ever owned and are in the process of getting rid of this junk. Poor quality. Since day one the car has had a very hard pull to the right. The Jeep has been to the dealer about 8 times for the pull and for brakes. They have been very uncooperative and told me the pull was normal....yea right.
