Still Going Strong
Bought this van new in 2001 and it's never been taken to any repair shop. Dealer or otherwise. If you're gonna put your precious cargo (wife and kids) in a box, this is the one. The safest, the most reliable, the most luxurious and the most worry-free box out there in the market. BTW, I also own a BMW Z4 which has been to the dealership for "tweaking" 3 times since i bought it last year. Something about them Japanese engineers. I bet in the next 25 years or so we'll think Japanese when we think of prestigious automobiles.
Our Odyssey for a reliable Transmission
We bought our used 2001 Odyssey after our first child was born in 2003. It was reportedly one of the safest minivans on the market and we felt good about the purchase. Within the first year at about 90k miles, the tranny went out and the dealership replaced it. Two years and 40k later, the replacement tranny went out, this time we had to replace it. After only 21k miles on this tranny, it goes out and the dealership agreed to replace it but we had to pay the labor cost which was about $750.00. We did so and sold the van immediately after. We replaced this unreliable vehicle with a Lexus GS400 and have never looked back. If you are looking for reliability, stay away from this vehicle!

We like out '01 Oddy very much. We drove 60 miles to Brown's Honda in Charlottesville because (a) they let us test drive one and (b) we didn't have to pay over MSRP. Ask for Diane - she was great. I like the Oddy, but it has been in the dealer 4 times so far because of power door malfunctions. The Magic Seat, Traction Control, Climate Control and larger size made this our choice over the Sienna. It's our first Honda after 4 Toyotas and I rate them (as companies) equal.
Tranny advice and comments
Trannies are the weak link in ALL vehicles and especially VANS and MINIVANS. Most people don't realize this and push it to the limit abusing and breaking it prematurely. Be gentle with the tranny and will last much longer than did for others. Tip - find (feel) the changing spots and take the leg off the gas just before gear change. i.e. after 20km/h, 40,80)
Resale value higher than sales price
A great ride and keeps my family very safe. I paid less than what I see the same used models selling for today. Imagine buying a car and making money on it!
