When a new Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco isn't your style, but a vintage Land Rover or Toyota Land Cruiser is too much work, there's the 2026 Ineos Grenadier. The rugged off-roader from a new English automaker costs plenty and lacks many comforts you'd expect for the price. But its retro charm and robust construction give it a foundation for serious adventure. In a world where SUVs are more and more homogenous every year, the Ineos Grenadier is refreshingly different and dripping with personality.

Driving experience

How does the INEOS Grenadier drive? We weren't expecting much from the Grenadier off-roader in our battery of road tests. Even by that standard, the results were disappointing. The Grenadier needed 8.8 seconds to reach 60 mph, much slower than the six-cylinder Ford Bronco and Land Rover Defender. Braking performance was similarly underwhelming — stopping from 60 mph required 152 feet — and like that of a heavy-duty pickup. For 2026, the Grenadier receives a heavily revised steering system that fixes most of our previous complaints. The Grenadier does a lot better for itself now and is easier to drive as a result.

Things improve off-road, where the Grenadier's copious ground clearance (10.5 inches) and optimal approach and departure angles make it easy to traverse many obstacles. Available locking front and rear differentials also helped deliver better traction on a pockmarked hill climb. Ride quality is surprisingly good given the off-road tires and long suspension travel. The Grenadier is unbothered by potholes or road imperfections and keeps the effects from reaching the cabin. Driver aids are sparse: no adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning or surround-view camera system here.

Comfort

How comfortable is the INEOS Grenadier? The Grenadier offers plenty of passenger room in both rows. Even passengers 6 feet and taller have enough space in back. Car seats are also easy to install, with easily accessible top and bottom LATCH anchors and plenty of space to maneuver. The front and rear seats are made by Recaro, and while only manually adjustable, they're pleasantly supportive and comfortable.

The fixed roof means the Grenadier doesn't suffer from the same wind noise issues as the Wrangler and Bronco. There's some tire roar and coarse engine noise, but the cabin is insulated enough to enjoy conversations even at highway speeds.

The touchscreen does double duty as the speedometer, thus its high position on the dash, but remains within easy reach of the driver's seat. First-time passengers will geek out on the overhead switches that make the SUV feel like an airplane cockpit. They're charming, fun and functional. Less charming is the panel of warning lights in front of the driver, which becomes an unsightly mess that's hard to decipher if several lights are illuminated.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? The meager tech features on offer work well, but the Grenadier doesn't offer a native on-road navigation system or voice commands. There's a pathfinding system for off-roading that will record the path the vehicle travels so you can find your way back on a trail, but that's it. Fortunately, there's wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, so you can use those for navigation while on the move. Provided you have a cell signal, of course.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The innovative split gate allows cargo access without needing to open a giant, wide tailgate like with the Bronco and Wrangler. Cargo room is expansive with 40.6 cubic feet behind the second row or 71.8 cubic feet with the second row folded. The cargo area's load-in height is high but not egregiously tall like the Land Cruiser's.

The Grenadier lacks small-item storage, though. Aside from the glovebox or smaller center console bin, there's no covered storage in the cabin. The tiny space in front of the shifter isn't sunk, so items in there will take flight when you drive around corners. Your phone can go in one of the cupholders, unless you have drinks in there, in which case it's going back in your pocket or purse.

Is the INEOS Grenadier a good value? Eighty grand seems like a lot to pay for an intentionally simple nostalgia wagon. Its lack of modern amenities is central to its charm but also means you sacrifice features that make competing SUVs more comfortable and capable. That said, build quality is a big highlight. New automakers tend to struggle here, but Ineos builds the Grenadier at a former Mercedes-Benz plant and it feels like a very solid machine. Underbody protection is so robust that you can take it off-road without worrying much about damaging hanging parts.

How’s the fuel economy? It's easy to remember the base Grenadier's fuel economy estimates since it gets an EPA-estimated 15 mpg combined (15 city/15 highway) for most trims. The Trialmaster Edition is rated at 14 mpg combined. On our fuel economy test route, we measured fuel economy of 15.6 mpg. Turns out that when your SUV is as aerodynamic as a barn, it's going to affect your efficiency.

The Grenadier is a vehicle that could only be built by a startup. No established automaker would dare to build a vehicle with either the exterior (a retro Land Rover Defender clone) or interior (a take on a jet cockpit) that this throwback off-road SUV shows up with. The driving experience is just as old-school as its looks suggest, with its vague steering and lack of modern driver aids. But that's the point! You buy a Grenadier for its undeniable British cool factor. That gives it a deep well of charm from which to draw.

Whether those merit luxury pricing starting north of $70,000 is debatable, and for the money, there are more battle-tested options such as the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail and Toyota 4Runner. The Land Rover Defender 110 has similar retro charm and off-road ability with a dash more comfort and luxury. While Ineos has created a niche off-road vehicle, it has made some concessions to attract a broader range of buyers. For 2026, Ineos has addressed our biggest issue with the Grenadier: its steering. Thanks to internal changes to the steering mechanism, the Grenadier feels more precise and will more willingly go where you point it. This change makes the Grenadier more enjoyable to drive on the road. Ineos has also reprogrammed the automatic emergency braking system and added a new lane keeping assistance system to bring the Grenadier back into the center of its lane should you stray too close to the line. I’m a gear head and read/watched everything before I recently bought my 26 Grenadier. I conclude they don’t get a fair shake, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. The same people who got LR to dumb down the Defender just don’t get it. The steering, stereo, and AC are just fine. The ride and drive characteristics are much better than a Wrangler and Land Cruiser, though …
