My new Si

ksm1998, Aberdeen, MD, 12/09/2017
2017 Honda Civic Si 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
I have owned many cars and was not really in the market for a new car, but Honda was having a lease special (only $199!!!) for a 2017 Civic Si and I couldn't resist. Let's just say I am very happy. I got it in Lunar Silver and I actually think it is a really good looking coupe. The rear wing does interfere with rear vision a bit, but certainly not a deal breaker. The car is a joy to … drive, with great damping to soak up bumps and not be too harsh considering it is a sports car. It is quick enough to be fun, but not so quick that you're breaking the law in just 2nd gear. There is the expected turbo lag (and/or boost threshold) issue, but keep it under 3000rpm and you will get nearly 40mpg out of this 1.5 liter. As with most Honda manuals, this is a joy to shift. It is not quite Miata slick or nearly as precise as the S2000s I have owned, but still fun. It is not like the long, rubbery throws of VWs, BMWs and Audis I have owned. I am 6'1" and my head nearly hits the roof. Tons of leg room, but if you are taller than me, your head may poke through the sunroof (or get the sedan which had a bit more headroom). Seats are not leather, but are heated and I prefer that (GTI is the same). Leather is too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. Stereo system sounds good and infotainment system works well. Who needs navigation when you have Android Auto? I thought I wouldn't like the lack of a volume knob, but the steering wheel volume button works quickly to turn volume up or down. This car will not be my daily driver (especially because it is a lease), but I will be missing it on the days I am not behind it's wheel.

The right automobile for me!

Greg Zeller, Toledo, OH, 10/01/2017
2017 Honda Civic Si 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
I have had this car only 1 month. It has good power and I drive it mostly in Sport mode. Ride is somewhat stiff which is what I want and expect for a sporty car. Fuel mileage has been about 32 for the first 2 fill ups. The seats are great. Very good support and they fit my body and height. My previous 2 cars were a Prelude and an Acura RSX-S. The turbo has a totally different power … range than the VTEC engine of course. Prelude was my all time favorite car. This comes real close and being just fun to drive every day. My Si in now 3.5 years old. I have less than 20,000 miles. I love this car. 5/18/2023 Love the car. 2 door is no longer available. Glad I got it 23,000 miles . So fun to drive.

3rd Civic Si, and our 15th Honda since 1985!

Jeff From Up North, Saint Peter, MN, 08/23/2017
2017 Honda Civic Si 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
This is the latest Civic Si, I've owned a 1985, and a 2002. I traded in my 2016 Accord coupe for this. So happy I did! Amazing value, nice bells and whistles, but it's still a civic. In the 17000+ miles I've gone, I'm getting 34-35 mpg! Not too powerful, but Sporty and Very Fun to drive!

A Blast to Drive From Day One!

Paul, Pensacola, FL, 12/21/2018
2017 Honda Civic Si 2dr Coupe (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
If you enjoy a fun car for 2 or less, this is a good choice. My other car is a Miata-X5 . . . I wanted to enjoy my driving experience to the max! My everyday car is the Si . . . I have been a loyal Honda fan since 1992, and will only drive manual transmission cars. My gas mileage is averaging at 40+ mpg. Couldn't be happier. Have owned the car for more than a year!

Which Civic does Edmunds recommend?

Any 2017 Honda Civic powered by the superb turbocharged 1.5-liter engine will be a good choice by our standards. If you're looking for the most equipment for your money, the EX-T trim makes for quite a good value. It includes available features for the Civic such as remote start and the LaneWatch blind-spot camera. A base Civic such as the LX is certainly appealing, and the standard 2.0-liter engine is fine, but the extra power and fuel economy gained with the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine are worth the price.

What’s new

After a complete redesign just last year, the 2017 Honda Civic coupe is back with a few key additions. Most important, a hatchback variant has been added to the lineup, and the available turbocharged engine makes a bit more power in that model, too. A new high-performance Si and Civic Type R should arrive later in the year.

Vehicle overview

Redesigned just a year ago, the 2017 Honda Civic has re-established its standing as a no-brainer choice for a small car. Think of it this way: Are you interested in impressive fuel economy and/or class-leading acceleration? Yep, the Civic's got that. What about a comfortable, roomy interior filled with upscale materials? Check. Do you want something livelier than the typical sedan? Well, Honda's got the Civic coupe, plus performance-focused Civic Si and Type R versions are on the way, too.

An excellent all-arounder, the newest Civic drives well no matter which version you pick. Out on the highway, the Civic offers a composed ride quality that doesn't get overly floaty or harsh. Honda has also packed in plenty of the latest technology, from smartphone integration to advanced driver aids that can help you avoid accidents. No matter how you look at it, the 2017 Honda Civic is one of the best cars in its class.

Though it may be the base trim, the standard Civic LX comes with a lot of equipment for the money. Standard equipment includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (158 horsepower, 138 pound-feet of torque), a six-speed manual transmission (a continuously variable transmission is also available), 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, LED daytime running lights and taillights, full power accessories, 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, cruise control, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and manual front seats with driver height adjustment. Electronic features include a 5-inch central display screen, a rearview camera, Bluetooth (phone and audio) and a four-speaker sound system with a USB port.

The standard LX is nice enough, but if you'd like a bit more in-car tech and a few more basic creature comforts, then step up to the LX-P. The LX-P builds off the standard LX equipment and adds a continuously variable transmission (CVT), 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, and remote start.

Stepping up to the EX-T gets you one of the Civic's best items, the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (174 hp, 167 lb-ft). It also comes with a six-speed manual as standard or an optional CVT (174 hp, 162 lb-ft). Thanks to impressive acceleration and big mpg numbers, the turbo-four is reason enough alone to buy an EX-T Civic or above, but the EX-T also adds foglights, heated side mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, a trip computer, heated front seats, a 10-speaker audio system with dual USB ports, Honda's LaneWatch blind-spot camera, dynamic guidelines for the rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 7-inch touchscreen interface with satellite radio, Pandora compatibility,HondaLink smartphone integration andApple CarPlay/Android Auto integration (including app-based navigation).

Right near the top of the heap is the EX-L, which gets the CVT and upgrades to leather upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The top-level Touring trim hardly even feels like a Civic with all the upscale items that are included. It adds LED headlights, automatic wipers, an integrated navigation system and the Honda Sensing safety package that includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane departure intervention, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

The Honda Sensing safety package is optional on the other Civic coupe trims.

Trim tested

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions, although trim levels share many aspects. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2016 Honda Civic EX-L Coupe (1.5L turbo; CVT automatic).

Driving

4.5
The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine works great with Honda's smooth and polished continuously variable automatic transmission. A composed and eager chassis is complemented by reassuringly strong brakes and accurate, steady steering.

Comfort

4.0
The coupe's front seats are comfortable and supportive without being too aggressive or confining, and that applies equally to the backseat. The ride quality is smooth and controlled without being too cushy. Road noise and engine sound are never far away, but neither is obnoxious enough to be distracting.

Interior

4.5
Interior space is impressive, and the large backseat is totally habitable on long road trips. The ideally shaped trunk maximizes the available cargo capacity. The logical and easy-to-use interior controls are unfortunately marred by terrible touch-sensitive audio volume and tuning controls.

Utility

5.0
The 2017 Honda Civic has lots of space, and it uses it well. Everything is packaged in a way that you can store plenty of small items in the cabin as well as several large suitcases in the trunk.

Technology

The Civic's no-knob volume system is always frustrating, and smartphone integration is also disappointing. We've also found reliability issues in our long-term test of the Civic's HondaLink system. What's more, the adaptive cruise control is a bit too quick to react in traffic.
