Overview
Genesis is Hyundai's luxury brand, aiming to deliver world-class comfort and refinement at a lower price point compared to its established German rivals. The G70 sedan is the smallest and most affordable model in its lineup, slotting below the larger G80 and G90 executive four-doors. It may not be as finely crafted as the newest competitors from Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz, but a well-executed next-gen G70 could close the gap.
Edmunds spotlight: How much is a badge worth?
Comparing the starting prices for the G70 and its European rivals initially shows that the difference isn't all that great. It's when you stack up standard features in an apples-to-apples comparison that the scale tips toward the Genesis, revealing savings of several thousand dollars. There is a difference in the G70's materials quality — perhaps an interior trim piece looks metal but is painted plastic instead, or maybe the leather isn't quite as supple — but they do look the part. Altogether, the G70 is a solid pick, but in the brand-conscious luxury class, some may be turned off by the lack of a German logo.
Competitors to consider
The Genesis G70 competes against the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in this compact sedan space; as noted earlier, Genesis is tantalizingly close to matching the Germans in terms of overall goodness. Alternatives include the Acura Integra, Cadillac CT4 and Lexus IS. We think the G70 is superior to the non-German competition.
