Best Value in safety, tech, style

My previous car was a BMW 5 series. We wanted something utilitarian to support our lifestyle with two kids, visiting family, road trips to the mountains, beach etc. Minivan was out of the question. We could have spent $70K+ on a comparability equipped Benz GL or Audi Q7. We netted a fully loaded Explorer for $45K - a great value in my book. We have 5,000 miles on it over 6 month and it's been positive. The car does not provide a thrilling driver's experience like the 5 series does, but that's not what you get this car for. We will put the $25k we saved over a benz/audi and put it towards a real drivers sports car as our other car.

On a different plane...

Having considered an Explorer Limited since the 2011 redesign, my wife and I are glad to have waited a couple of years for the Explorer Sport. Trading off a 2007 V8 Explorer XLT, the Sport's Ecoboost V6 and Taurus SHO driving dynamics made us completely forget the V8. This is a fully modern, refined and fun-to-drive vehicle that exists on a completely different plane from the body-on-frame Explorers of yore. It's tight, solid, carefully constructed and (to our eyes) very handsome. The dual-panel glass roof, ambient lighting and Star Trek dash layout create an interesting and special interior environment, especially at night. It feels upscale for a Ford. And at nearly $49K, it should!

2013 Ford Explorer Limited

Love the Explorer. I am starting to dislike Ford. I have a rust spot on the rear lift gate and paint flaking off in the same area just on the other side of the license plate area. Ford refuses to repair because I have 52000 miles and the bumper to bumper warranty has expired. I would think an obvious defect in the paint process would be covered on a 2013 vehicle regardless of warranty status. Three service advisers at my local dealership all agree that Ford should fix this paint defect.

Thought I was gonna keep it forever...changed mind

I bought this car with the intent of keeping it as long as I could. I have now decided that it’s time to sell it. Pros: This car has beautiful styling. I see my car in parking lots and still think “wow that’s a nice car” and it stands out in a good way. Inside is a nice blend of different colors of materials and styling as well. The metallic accents give it a really premium look. This car does great in the snow. My Lexus Rx that I had before this did a little bit better, but still does amazing, no issues with that at all. Handling is absolutely amazing. Does better than my Lexus did. Interior materials don’t feal cheap at all. SYNC system is well equipped, but hard to use. Lots of technology on the car. So far (knock on wood) only thing under the hood that’s gone wrong is the battery, which is expected. CONS: Where to begin. Let’s start with the carbon monoxide that’s getting into the Explorers. I always get a headache from driving this car and it wasn’t until I found out from a friend that I was aware that there is carbon monoxide getting into the cars and Ford has failed to do a formal recall. Instead they did a “service bulletin” so whoever wants the repair done can come get it done and everybody else just doesn’t know that there’s toxic fumes getting in their cars. I wish Ford would have contacted owners about the issue, especially being carbon monoxide getting into family cars. Next is visibility. I can’t see out of my windows. The pillars around all of the windows are so large that you can’t see where you’re turning. I still hit curbs every once in a while. I can’t see behind the car without the backup camera either. This is a huge problem, especially since the Explorer drives like it is a lot larger than it actually is. The SYNC system is well equipped but is hard to use. I still don’t know how to use the buttons to connect my phone so I have to use the voice commands every time I start the car and say “bluetooth audio”. All my other cars automatically default to bluetooth if I was on bluetooth before, this one doesn’t. MPG is absolutely horrendous. I average 17.7 and I drive like a grandma, and I live in a hilly area. All of the other cars I have had do better than the estimated but this one does worse. Lastly, this car has problems with the electrical system. Always says passenger side door is open when it’s not, sometimes does it with driver side too. Annoying to hear the chime every time I take my foot off the brake and see the door ajar message. Lights won’t turn off either even after I lock the car. My driver side rear window opens but doesn’t close properly. I have to drive while pulling the switch when I open that one because it cuts in and out. Other than that, my only complaint is with the lights. The headlights don’t turn off by themselves which was standard on all other cars I’ve ever had. The lights on other cars usually turns off 30 seconds after you turn off the car or when you lock the car. On this car, they just stay on. As far as acceleration goes, this car is absolutely horrible. Old minivan does better. My next car will likely not be an Explorer.

My Newest Sweetheart

This is a truly marvelous SUV. Styling is a head turner w/20 inch wheels, well sculpted body and body creases. Corners great with its unitized body and the interior coddles its passengers with plush leather seats, an ABUNDANCE of space in all rows, intuitive tech features and a wonderfully clear, 13 speaker stereo. I love the solidity of driving in our nasty Chicago winters while the terrain management system makes short work of 10 inches of untouched snow and my wife and I are treated to heated seats, satellite radio and warm cocoa. Summers are also a treat under the dual sunroofs. This car was designed heavily based on the Land Rover and I swear somedays I forget that it isn't one!
