Overview
The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe can feel a bit like a dinosaur when compared to the endless supply of crossover SUVs flooding American streets. But as any 9-year-old can tell you, dinosaurs are awesome. The Tahoe received a refresh in 2025 and, in addition to an exterior refresh, got a power boost for its optional diesel engine. As such, we don't expect major changes to the 2026 Tahoe. Its massive size and strong towing power make it a great pick for large families looking to hit the open road.
Edmunds spotlight: A substantive refresh last year
Last year, Chevy gave the Tahoe a new nose and tail, a revised dash design and new features. The exterior tweaks are minor enough that you'll have to be a Tahoe enthusiast (do those exist?) to notice them. But the updated dashboard is apparent and gives the cabin a techy vibe. Chevy moved the previously dash-mounted push-button shifter to the column where it belongs. In doing so, it freed up space for a huge 17.7-inch touchscreen that's standard on every trim. The system is Google Android-based, and unlike its application in Chevy's electric vehicles, it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The optional turbodiesel 3.0-liter six-cylinder now makes 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque, up from 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft, respectively. And it's now offered in the Z71 trim. A 360-degree camera system and adaptive cruise are now standard on every Tahoe.
Competitors to consider
The Tahoe's primary competition is the Ford Expedition, which is offered with a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 in standard and high-output versions. However, there's a distinct lack of hybrid or diesel power in the Expedition's lineup. Other considerations include the also-revised-for-2025 GMC Yukon — the Tahoe's mechanical twin — the redesigned Nissan Armada, and the hybrid-only Toyota Sequoia. Checking out any of the biggest three-row crossovers is also a good idea — they're cheaper, more efficient and have nearly as much passenger space.
What’s it like to live with?
We tested the current-generation Chevy Tahoe for 42,000 miles, so if you're looking for a more in-depth view of Chevy's full-size SUV, it's a great place for a deep dive. In short, we relished its space and suffered no major problems, but the 5.3-liter V8's fuel economy was poor even by full-size SUV standards.
Edmunds Expert Rating
Our Verdict
Performance
Navigating city streets with the Tahoe is easy thanks to its tight turning circle and light steering. The 10-speed automatic transmission shifts promptly and unobtrusively. But the Tahoe's light steering is vague, especially at higher speeds, and the combined control feedback makes it clear that you're driving a large SUV and should probably take it easy around corners.
When equipped with the optional Z71 package, the Tahoe gets a standard two-speed transfer case and improved approach and departure angles. It can also benefit from the height-adjustable air suspension. It's quite capable in moderate off-roading situations.
Comfort
The Tahoe's multi-zone climate control system's effectiveness does not disappoint; heating and cooling are effective for all three rows. We're less fond of the smaller climate control buttons in the front and the excessive noise of the rear climate system, especially if you're sitting in the third row. Another source of elevated noise is the windshield. It produced a distinct roar at highway speeds.
Interior
For the 2025 refresh, Chevy overhauled the Tahoe's dash and moved its shifter back the steering column, freeing up dash space previously used by the push-button shifter, for the massive 17.7-inch screen. This is a welcome change that fixes our primary gripe about the 2021-2024 Tahoe's poor use of dash real estate. And there's also a huge volume knob right where it belongs.
Technology
We found the lane keeping assistance slow to respond and inconsistent. Another disappointment: Our test Tahoe's stability control system was poorly calibrated. It was prone to overreacting when going around turns and dramatically reduced the vehicle's speed far beyond what we thought was necessary.
Super Cruise is available on four of the Tahoe's six trims (LT, RST, Premier and High Country), and while we haven't tested it in the Tahoe, we give this system high marks in other GM vehicles.
Storage
The driver and front passenger have little in the way of small-item storage, with only two cupholders and a moderately sized bin. The center console isn't as big as we expected and is lined with hard plastic, so you'll hear items sliding around. Chevrolet did give the Tahoe a lot of door pocket storage, with the front doors getting three tiers for your personal items. Second-row passengers lack a center console but get ample storage in the door pockets.
When properly equipped, the Tahoe can tow up to 8,400 pounds. Our 4WD Z71-equipped test vehicle was rated to tow 8,200 pounds, though we think the 5.3-liter V8 might be pretty strained doing so. Consider getting the more powerful 6.2-liter V8 or more frugal diesel six-cylinder if you plan on doing a lot of towing. For comparison, Ford's Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds.
Fuel Economy
It should also be noted the 5.3-liter engine in the Tahoe does not require premium gasoline, while the Ford Expedition's turbocharged engine recommends it. Chevrolet offers a more powerful 6.2-liter V8 engine that's estimated to get 16 mpg combined (4WD). There's also an available diesel engine, which the EPA estimates achieves 24 mpg combined or 22 mpg combined with 4WD.
Value
The Tahoe's bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties are fairly standard at three years/36,000 miles and five years/60,000 miles, respectively. More impressive is Chevy's roadside assistance for five years/60,000 miles. You'll also get your first oil change for free.
Wildcard
Which Tahoe does Edmunds recommend?
Chevrolet hasn't released official information on the 2026 Tahoe as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Tahoe, we'd recommend the LT trim level. Sure, the base LS is decently equipped and is available with nine-passenger seating (front-row bench!), but the LT's extra features and options are worth paying extra for.
