Overview

Written by automotive expert Michael Cantu

Updated: 9/22/2026

The Colorado serves as Chevrolet's midsize truck. It's very similar to its corporate cousin, the GMC Canyon, which has a more premium look. The Colorado boasts large and crisp display screens and plenty of excellent tech features in every trim level. But it doesn't forget that it's a truck and delivers plenty of utility thanks to its sizable bed and class-leading towing and payload capacities. There's only one engine option, but it's a powerful one that provides snappy acceleration. The Colorado is available in several trim levels, from an affordable work truck to a pricey off-road-specced brute with specialty parts.

Edmunds Expert Rating

edmunds TESTED

Driven, tested, rated by automotive expert Nick Yekikian

Good

6.4

out of 10

We drove the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Driving experience

7.6/10

How does the Chevrolet Colorado drive? Traditional body-on-frame trucks such as the Colorado have come a long way in terms of driving and handling. The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is responsive when you press the gas pedal, and it produces plenty of low-end torque, which is beneficial for both city driving and towing. The transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and the brakes provide sufficient stopping power for emergency braking and are also easy to modulate for smooth stops.

Our test truck was a mild-mannered Z71 trim. Even so, it was sure-footed and fun to drive in the dirt. Buyers willing to give up a bit of on-road comfort for a lot more capability off the beaten path will definitely enjoy the Trail Boss and ZR2 versions. It doesn't feel too stiff when it's unladen and manages to smooth out bumps in the road well. The Colorado is also pretty easy to see out of and doesn't have massive blind spots.

Many driver aids are also available, including blind-spot warning, lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control. The available 360-degree camera system makes parking and navigating tight off-road trails easier.

Comfort

5.8/10

How comfortable is the Chevrolet Colorado? The Colorado is relatively quiet inside. Trucks with chunky off-road tires tend to transmit a significant amount of road noise into the cabin, but our Colorado Z71 truck was remarkably quiet compared to other midsize trucks. At highway speeds, however, wind noise coming off the front pillar and windshield is very noticeable.

We would have liked more comfortable seats as well. The cushions are flat and too firm for long-distance driving, lacking sufficient lateral support and lumbar adjustment. The front of the cabin feels spacious and open, but taller backseat riders might struggle for knee room.

The Colorado's interior is well thought out. Most of the control buttons and knobs are chunky and easy to find with just a glance. There is a lot of hard plastic around, but the cabin should hold up well after years of hard use. Unfortunately, the Colorado hides crucial controls, such as those for its headlights, within its central screen, creating an unnecessary challenge when making adjustments.

In-cabin tech

8.4/10

How’s the tech? The Colorado's screens are bright and crystal-clear, and the instrument panel is configurable with multiple views. Google's Android software powers the infotainment system, and the Chevy is all the better for it. Its voice recognition is intuitive and easy to use, there's Alexa on board for Amazon users, and you get wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There are also four USB ports (one USB-A and one USB-C up front; the same in back) and wireless charging. It's good stuff for a class of vehicles that rarely prioritizes such offerings. We would have liked a few more USBs, though.

Storage & cargo

3/10

How’s storage and cargo? Storage in the Colorado is mediocre. The door pockets are too small to be of any real use, and the compartment underneath the rear bench is nice but doesn't offer much in the way of storage (though it does offer a 60/40 split). The center console is deep, however, and a divider is included, making it a two-level space, which is nice. We also appreciate the little phone slots that have been integrated into the cupholders.

There's one space for larger cargo in the Colorado, and it's under the rear seats. Sadly, this is nothing to write home about — that bin is already occupied by the vehicle jack. Groceries or larger objects will have to sit loose on the floor.

Value

7.5/10

Is the Chevrolet Colorado a good value? The Colorado's interior is well built, showcasing Chevy's attention to fit and finish. While lower trims feel utilitarian, upper trims offer a refined experience that justifies their cost given the truck's capabilities and features. The Colorado excels in features with a powerful engine, class-leading towing, and a larger infotainment screen compared to rivals like the Tacoma and Ranger.

Everyday usability and solid warranties make it a compelling choice. There's three years/36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper and five years/60,000 miles of drivetrain coverage. Rust protection lasts for six years/100,000 miles. Chevy also provides five years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance, plus a year of free maintenance.

Towing & hauling

10/10

How is the towing and hauling? The Colorado excels in towing and hauling. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,700 pounds, the most in its class. It also has an optional tow package that monitors your trailer's mileage and can diagnose issues with it. The cargo bed offers a neat in-tailgate storage area and a 240-volt household outlet in the bed for powering smaller household appliances.

The Colorado's payload capacity of 1,833 pounds is class-leading. This ensures you can carry your friends and their gear to some pretty far-flung destinations without overly taxing the truck.

MPG

3/10

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the Colorado will get between 16 mpg and 21 mpg in combined city/highway driving depending on the configuration. We tested a Z71 trim, which has 4WD and a 19 mpg estimate. On our real-world evaluation route, the Colorado edged out the EPA's combined estimate, netting 21.5 mpg. That's right on par with other trucks in this class, and if you find yourself in the new Colorado, you should be able to hit the EPA's figures reliably.

X factor

7/10

It's got plenty of personality, even in the middle-of-the-road LT Z71 trim. It's not often that a truck gets compliments in LA, but we heard plenty during our time with the Colorado. More than just garnering compliments, this truck can work. Its impressive towing and big payload numbers, as well as real off-road capability (if you option it correctly), make it a truck through and through. The safe choice in this segment is the Tacoma, but if you want something you genuinely don't see every day, the Colorado is a very good option.

Deals & Buying Tips for the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado for October

The 2026 Chevrolet Colorado has real deal energy right now, with about $3,500 in total savings available and a big pool of new trucks to shop.

Buyers are already paying about $2,500 below MSRP on average, and Chevrolet adds a $1000 customer cash rebate, which stacks to roughly $3,500 total savings. The discount is very consistent across trims at about 6% off sticker, so your deal target should be similar no matter which Colorado you pick.
New inventory is plentiful at about 18,700 trucks nationwide, which gives you more room to cross-shop dealers. Work Truck has the deepest stock, while the ZR2 is the tightest, so expect the hardest negotiating on the off-road halo trim.
Chevrolet is offering a promotional rate as low as 4.9% for 48, 60, or 72 months for qualified buyers. That is well below typical market rates, so financing through Chevy could cut your total interest cost.
New Colorados are moving in about 30 days, which is just a touch quicker than the 29-day market average. That points to steady demand, not a panic-buy situation, so shop quotes from several stores before you commit.

2026 Chevrolet Colorado trim level differences

The 2026 Chevrolet Colorado is a midsize truck available only as a four-door crew cab with a 5-foot bed. There are five trim levels to choose from: WT (Work Truck), LT, Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2. Every Colorado is powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (310 hp, 430 lb-ft). An eight-speed automatic is the only available transmission. Four-wheel drive is optional on the WT and LT trims and standard on all others. Compare the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado trim levels in-depth.

Which Colorado trim does Edmunds recommend?

Most midsize truck shoppers will be drawn to the LT trim because of its reasonable starting price that helps keep the cost in check. It also allows you to customize it with individual options or packages without fear of draining your bank account.

Competitors to consider

As much as we like the Colorado, it's up against a competitive group of midsize trucks. One of our favorites is the Ford Ranger, which was redesigned in 2024. Like the Colorado, it has few flaws and provides lots of tech and utility. The GMC Canyon shares the Colorado's strengths but adds a more upscale design inside and out. The long-running Tacoma is another compelling alternative that offers off-road models and a powerful hybrid powertrain. The Honda Ridgeline has the roomiest rear seats and is the most comfortable alternative. Read our Expert Rating below to help you decide if the Colorado is right for you.

Edmunds spotlight: From well equipped to impressively equipped

Like many trucks, the Colorado offers a model for just about anyone. The Work Truck (WT) model is easily one of the most affordable midsize trucks but offers a list of features including a digital instrument panel, a sizable 11.3-inch center touchscreen, a package of advanced driver aids, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Folks wanting a rugged-looking off-road model without breaking the bank should opt for the midlevel Trail Boss that brings all-terrain tires, large fender flares and a 2-inch suspension lift. But if money is no object, go for the ZR2 Bison Edition. It touts Multimatic DSSV suspension dampers, 35-inch mud-terrain tires, and loads of American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) off-road goodies.

What’s it like to live with?

Living with a Colorado for over 20,000 miles will tell you just about everything you need to know about the truck. We bought a 2023 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 and put it through our test team's thorough evaluation and drove it around like it was our personal truck. Owners Say

Overall, owner sentiment is mixed. Many owners like the strong power, smooth ride, nice looks, and roomy front seats, and some say it gets good gas mileage too. But others report serious problems like leaks, bad sensors, screen issues, rough seats, and truck parts that break early. A few owners also do not like having key controls on the touchscreen.
