With 65 more horsepower than the standard MDX, the 2025 MDX Type S handily outpowers its non-turbo stablemate. But there's more to this flagship model than just horsepower. Its adaptive air suspension, transmission and all-wheel-drive system all work together to improve handling and performance, and it pays off with a surprisingly nimble three-row luxury SUV. Best of all, the Type S retains all of the day-to-day practicality of the standard MDX, with the 2025 model adding new driver assist technology, a premium Bang & Olufsen audio system, and a touchscreen infotainment screen that replaces last year's distracting-to-use touchpad interface.

Edmunds spotlight: New touchscreen infotainment

One of the biggest issues we had with earlier versions of this fourth-generation MDX was the so-called True Touchpad Interface, or TTI. It seemed like a good idea in theory but it was complicated to use when driving because it worked differently depending on if you were using the Acura interface or smartphone integration. Luckily, Acura has abandoned it once and for all in the 2025 MDX in favor of a much more straightforward touchscreen. Not only is it a huge improvement over the previous touchpad, it's one of the snappiest touchscreens we've used and has a straightforward, sensible layout.

If you're interested in the MDX Type S then you might also want to check out six-cylinder versions of the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. Although the German SUVs typically outpace the MDX for acceleration, the Acura merits consideration thanks to its generally lower price. How does the MDX Type S drive? The 355-hp V6 engine gives the MDX Type S more character, and the turbocharged power feels much more well suited to hauling around a vehicle of this size. It's not exactly a rocket ship, however. At our test track, the Type S accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. That's quicker than the standard MDX (7.5 seconds) but still a bit slower than a comparable Audi Q7 or Genesis GV80.

Around turns, the Type S feels sportier and more secure than the standard MDX. Its all-wheel drive and snappier transmission programming, in addition the extra power, make it a more enjoyable car to drive than the standard MDX. That said, we longed for better straight-line performance, and that's the biggest knock on the Type S.

Comfort

How comfortable is the MDX Type S? How comfortable the MDX Type S is largely depends on how comfortable you want it to be. There are a range of drive modes to pick from that alter how firm the suspension is — Comfort is the most sedate. It's nearly ideal for everyday driving, soaking up most road imperfections with ease while maintaining excellent body control. Very little was able to flummox the Type S in our time behind the wheel, and we were impressed by the cabin's serenity regardless of speed.

The seats are a particular standout in the Type S. They're covered in a supple leather and offer plenty of adjustment range plus heating, cooling and massage. They're a fantastic place to rest, and no matter how much time we spent in them, our backs never came away fatigued.

Interior

How’s the interior? The MDX Type S cabin is largely the same as the one in the standard MDX. That means both its pros and cons carry over. Aside from the seats, a slightly different steering wheel and some new trim, the MDX Type S is nearly identical to the standard car. Luckily, our biggest gripe has been resolved since the touchpad has been replaced by a proper touchscreen. It's not only easier to use but significantly more responsive and quicker overall, even if shorter drivers might find the 12.3-inch screen a bit too far away.

Otherwise the MDX interior is spacious and comfortable for front and second-row passengers, although the third row is mostly for kids. Getting in and out of the cabin takes little effort, and Acura's push-button seat release for the second row is very easy to use. Visibility is pretty good thanks to large windows all around, and the optional surround-view camera system provides an even better 360-degree bumper-level visibility.

How’s the tech? Replacing the touchpad with a proper touchscreen infotainment system makes all the difference in usability and makes it easier to access the MDX's plentiful technology. The wide center screen is attractive, easy to read, and very responsive to touch inputs, and the integrated navigation system works well. The new 31-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, exclusive to the MDX Type S, sounds terrific, with excellent separation of low, mid and high range, great staging, and practically zero distortion at higher volumes. Audiophiles who knew the previous ELS was a sleeper will be happy with this system too.

Acura has expanded its suite of driver assist features for the Type S, highlighted by a new lane change assistance that scans traffic and makes a lane change for you while you're using adaptive cruise and lane keeping assistance. It also includes a new capacitive touch steering wheel that requires no more than a finger on the wheel to maintain lane keeping assistance rather than the full weight of the driver's hands. Beyond that, the tech is largely the same as in the regular MDX, with multiple USB ports throughout the cabin to help make sure everyone's devices stay topped up. And there's a wireless charger on top of all that.

How’s the storage? Cargo space and storage capacity are strong points. The MDX offers 16.3 cubic feet of space behind the third row, slightly more space than many other three-row midsize luxury crossovers. The second- and third-row seats fold flat, and there's bonus storage underneath the rear load floor. There's 39.1 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a max of 71.4 cubic feet. There is also a plethora of cubbies and large door bins for bottles and other small items.

Got small kids? The middle seats have three sets of car seat anchors, making it possible to fit three (small) child safety seats across. Maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. That's a decent amount and suitable for a small trailer, but some rival European SUVs can pull even more.

How economical is the MDX Type S? The EPA says the MDX Type S returns 19 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's an average figure for a three-row luxury SUV with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine. On our real-world mixed-driving evaluation route, the MDX Type S posted a respectable 20.9 mpg, which indicates the EPA's estimate seems realistic.

Is the MDX Type S a good value? The standard MDX offers strong value, but less so for the Type S. Yes, you're getting a roomy and comfortable SUV that's well built, but all of those qualities can be found in the standard MDX too. The Type S doesn't take performance high enough to warrant all that extra dough in our opinion.

For something of this size, yes, the MDX Type S is fun to drive. And it is a well-rounded luxury SUV. But there's an expectation of performance with the Type S moniker, and this MDX version doesn't fully deliver. 2025 Acura MDX First Impressions

The Acura MDX stands out in the luxury midsize three-row SUV class with a sharp design and a generous suite of features for the price. For 2025, the brand is sweetening the pot with fresh styling on the outside and new technology on the inside, further enhancing the MDX’s appeal.

Acura is replacing the 2024 grille with an updated version featuring an edgier, more defined diamond pattern to go along with darkened headlights and taillights. The differences are subtle but give the SUV a more aggressive look overall. The MDX Type S leans into the daring design with a frameless grille that seamlessly blends with the blacked-out exterior treatment.

What's under the MDX's hood?

The standard powertrain remains a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. All models employ a 10-speed transmission, but for the base and Technology models, the gears turn the front wheels only (with all-wheel drive as an option). Starting with the A-Spec grade, every MDX is equipped with all-wheel drive.

Buyers who want their family hauler a little spicier can continue to opt for the MDX Type S, featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter with 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque.

How's the MDX's interior?

While we appreciated the 2024 model's nicely crafted interior, there was room for improvements. Acura kept the parts we liked — comfortable seats and good visibility all around — and corrected missteps. The automaker is finally ditching the touchpad interface, which was a source of frustration for many of our editors. The 2025 MDX has an updated console that seamlessly integrates physical controls with a new standard 12.3-inch touchscreen. There's also more storage space due to a more efficient center console design.

Acura says it reduced road noise by an impressive 10%, which should make an audible difference at highway speeds. Rear doors are enhanced with laminated glass, and insulation is more robust in the front and rear fender liners as well as the door. Coupled with the new 16-way Milano leather front seats with nine-way massaging function available on Advance and A-Spec with Advance models, the interior has a spa-like atmosphere.

How's the MDX's tech?

Acura clearly put time and effort into shoring up the technology interface of the 2025 MDX. The standard 12.3-inch touchscreen interface with Google built-in is new (wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto remain standard), as are USB-C ports now in the first and second rows.

The spotlight is on two new Bang & Olufsen audio systems. Audiophiles will appreciate the high-end system in the Type S (which now comes standard with the Advance package), featuring an astounding 31 speakers. That's six additional speakers compared to the outgoing model. Technology, Advance and A-Spec grades now get a 19-speaker setup, including four in the headliner. Even the base model receives two additional speakers, for a total of 11.

Also of note are the updates to the safety suite included with every MDX, like new radar, cameras and sensors that enable active lane assist, lane change collision mitigation, and front cross-traffic warning.

Overview

The MDX is Acura's biggest SUV, and it's also one of the brand's most well-rounded machines. It comes standard with a powerful V6, has a lush interior (especially on higher trims), and has a starting price that won't break the bank. There's also a performance-oriented Type S model that features a more potent engine and a more engaging driving experience. The MDX has been a front-runner in its segment since it was refreshed in 2022, and 2025 is bringing some updates that might put it even further out in front.

Edmunds spotlight: Big changes coming

The MDX is getting big updates for 2025. Acura will finally ditch its finicky touchpad controller for the infotainment system and simply go with touchscreen controls in the MDX. That's a very welcome change. The MDX also carries forward the brand's move toward Bang & Olufsen as its premium sound system partner, something audiophiles will no doubt be happy to hear. Acura has also said that the MDX will get "additional automated driving capability," which could mean Acura is going to launch a Level 2 advanced driver assist system. We'll have to wait for more information until we know exactly what this will be.

You can expect massaged looks that bring the SUV more in line with the ZDX, the brand's new electric crossover. Think sharper, tighter-looking bodywork, a new frameless grille, and some mild updates to the front and rear fascias.

Competitors to consider

Even though Kia might not have as much brand cachet as Acura does, the Telluride is a great alternative to the MDX. It's similarly sized, and though its interior space might not be as lush, it still feels very high-quality. It's also less expensive, with top-level trims running about the same as a midgrade MDX. Another alternative to the MDX (and a new offering from Lexus) is the TX. It offers an abundance of space, an interior that's just as well appointed, and a number of different powertrains to pick from.
