After purchasing a 2000 Subaru Legacy/Outback to be used as a kid's car, the wife and I were amazed at how well the Legacy had held up for the past 12 years.
Aside from some wear and tear, it was a better car than our 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser and 2008 Ford Edge SEL.
That got the ball rolling into researching and ultimately replacing the aforementioned vehicles with a new 2013 Subaru Outback.
We've owned the car now for a little over two weeks and about 700 miles of driving.
The Outback looks great and with Subaru's AWD feels competant and safe.
Fuel economy thus far has been a rock solid 24.3 mpg in city driving.
The car is exceptionally quiet and road noise is dampened to a whisper.
My favorite feature is the comfort of the front driver's seat.
The perforated leather gives the seat a luxurious look and feel.
Combined with power seat controls and electronic lumbar support, I could drive long distances before needing to stretch.
The interior also has a lot soft touch material adding to the luxurious aura. Overall visability is excellent. I appreciate the Outback for the confidence boost it has given my wife when she drives it.
She never felt comfortable driving the Edge.
Although the Edge was a good vehicle, it didn't feel as nimble as the Outback.
The FWD Edge was never a solid performer in snow or on rain soaked pavement.
The Outback holds the advantage there.
Of course no one vehicle is perfect and the same can said of the Outback.
If you order the moonroof model, the electronic compass is sacrificed.
The name of the car is "Outback". Although Mick Dundee never needed one to navigate the real Outback, I would prefer a compass as std equipment.
The radio on-off/volume control nob seems tiny and difficult to grasp.
However there is volume control on the steering wheel.
Overall the gripes are minor.
The 2013 Subaru Outback is a great looking, roomy interior, fuel efficient, well appointed, and competant handling wagon/crossover.
Given Subaru's AWD pedigree, the Outback is a stong contender if you're in the market for a AWD wagon/CUV.
