The Durango might not appeal to a broad audience, but its performance and practicality are certainly impressive. After all, not many SUVs can hit 60 mph in under 5 seconds and tow up to 8,700 pounds. But what you get in capability you lack in refinement. As well equipped as the Durango might be, you are constantly reminded this is one of the older platforms on the market.

Overview
Midsize three-row SUVs are wildly popular with growing families but, let's face it, in general they're not all that exciting or inspiring. For those rare shoppers out there looking to spice things up, the 2022 Dodge Durango may be an intriguing alternative. Think of it as a wonderful mash-up of a muscle car and a sensible SUV. For 2022, the stunning Hellcat variant has been discontinued but, fear not, the 475-horsepower SRT model is still available.
Cost to DriveCost to drive estimates for the 2022 Dodge Durango SXT 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded in Ohio.

Avg. Large SUV
A byproduct of that stout power is excellent towing capabilities, but otherwise the Durango isn't as well rounded as the top SUVs in the class. These include the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot and Hyundai Palisade, which get higher scores for versatility and efficiency. We spell out in our Expert Rating below where the Durango shines and where improvement may be needed.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.0/10
How does the Durango drive? The Durango SRT, which is what we tested, is a testament to Dodge's commitment to performance. The engine is powerful, accelerating this 5,500-pound behemoth effortlessly to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Yet the Durango is also well mannered in everyday driving. Braking performance is strong and smooth.
The transmission's shifts are also buttery smooth and don't feel the least bit abrupt in stop-and-go traffic. Steering and handling are decent for a vehicle of this size and weight, but it does have its limits. Performance and everyday usability are rarely so even.

Comfort
7.0/10
How comfortable is the Durango? The seats in the Durango for all positions are roomy and comfortable. The first and second rows offer a good amount of legroom, while the third row can easily hold larger kids. The climate control works well with adequate airflow for all three rows.
The Durango SRT's ride, on the other hand, leaves a bit to be desired. While tolerable, it's not going to lull you to sleep on road trips. Road noise is omnipresent and so is the engine but that could be a welcome thing. The exhaust note is intoxicating.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The interior is airy and you can see well out of it, but the front and rear pillars can obstruct some visibility in tighter situations. The cabin is straightforward and user-friendly, and the interface for controls are simple to understand and find. Getting in and out of all seating positions, even the third row, is also fairly simple.
Drivers of nearly any size should be able to find a comfortable seating position thanks to the numerous seat and steering wheel adjustments.

Technology
7.5/10
How’s the tech? The Uconnect 4C interface on the 8.4-inch screen, while feeling a bit dated, is user-friendly and syncs up well with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration systems. If you can get the new 10.1-inch screen, which has Chrysler/Dodge's latest infotainment software and features. There are plenty of USB and 12-volt charging options for passengers in all positions.
Driver aids such as adaptive cruise and lane keeping assist are useful, but they are part of an optional Technology Group package. The upgraded Harman Kardon audio system sounds great and is worth getting.

Storage
8.0/10
How’s the storage? Even with performance as the top priority, the Durango SRT manages to be practical and flexible like an SUV should be. There's 84.5 cubic feet of space with all the seats folded, which places it slightly above the middle of this class. Small-item storage is exactly what you want in a three-row SUV with enough cubbies and cupholders for all passengers. But the party trick for this Durango might be its excellent 8,700-pound tow rating when properly equipped.
Fuel Economy
5.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? Here's a formula for you: SRT = bad mpg. That's just the way it goes. The Durango SRT is rated to get an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in combined driving (13 city/19 highway). On our 120-mile evaluation route, we were able to get 15.5 mpg, indicating that the EPA's estimates are at least realistic. The best fuel economy you can get is a rear-wheel-drive Durango with the V6, which gets 21 mpg combined. That's a lot better but still a tad below rival V6-equipped SUVs.
Value
6.5/10
Is the Durango a good value? What do you want in your SUV? That's what you'll have to ask yourself to define value. If you want luxury and comfort, look elsewhere because that is not what this SUV is about. The interior looks and feels a bit low-buck. But you certainly get your money's worth in performance. Dodge lines up with the rest of the class in warranty and roadside assistance coverage.
Wildcard
9.0/10
The Durango SRT is a burly, powerful SUV that looks and sounds the part. It's upfront, in-your-face, and shouts at you like a drill sergeant. It doesn't handle all that well but doesn't feel like it loses a step when it's fully loaded with people. Day to day, it's really more fun than an SUV has a right to be.
If you're into making a scene as you arrive and leave, this is the SUV for you. The looks and exhaust note will turn heads. Though it might have more attitude than sense, we can definitely see the appeal.

Which Durango does Edmunds recommend?
Among the Durango's best attributes are its power and towing capabilities. In order to take advantage, you'll need to step up to at least the R/T trim that comes with the stout V8 engine. We'd also consider adding the R/T Plus option package that includes some driver assistance and safety features as well as plenty of other convenience upgrades.
2022 Dodge Durango models
The 2022 Dodge Durango is available in five trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel and SRT 392. Dodge offers a choice of a V6 or one of two V8 engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Perfect do-anything vehicle

2022 Dodge Durango R/T 4dr SUV AWD (5.7L 8cyl 8A)
I researched vehicles for about a year (looking at 2-door coupes right up to full-size trucks, because I couldn't decide what I needed!) before finally deciding on a Durango, and placing an order for a 2022 R/T Tow-and-Go. I've had it for about four months now, and I am incredibly happy with my choice. Every time I get in the Durango, every time I smash the pedal to the floor, every time … I'm walking up to it in a parking lot, I smile. It has everything I want: aggressive good looks (especially from the front and side, with the SRT-style fender flares and wheels), amazing throaty sound (the Tow-and-Go trim has performance exhaust, and it is music to the ears), good solid performance, ride comfort, utility, etc. It has fantastic road manners, and drives like a much smaller vehicle; you feel very planted on the road, and it loves corners, despite its proportions.
I could go into detail on just about anything on this vehicle, but I'll try to condense it into a pros & cons list for brevity:
Pros:
Amazing sound both in and out of the vehicle; no drone, either!
Great performance – it’s not a Hellcat, but the R/T is no slouch!
Sleek, modern, and comfortable interior – good workmanship and no rattles
Great compatibility with Android Auto & wireless charging
Pretty good stock speakers
Very, very smooth ride – even with the stock run-flat tires
Aggressive good looks
Great pedal feel especially with the Brembo brakes on the TnG
Plenty of utility; tons of trunk space with the third row folded down
I haven’t had a need for it yet, but a huge towing capacity
Cons:
I wished they tuned it for a little higher on the horsepower; other Dodge vehicles with the same motor are rated for an extra 15 HP
Gas mileage isn’t great, but that’s to be expected with a 5000+ pound vehicle with an 8-cylinder motor
Everything else has been updated, but the rear of the vehicle is getting dated and could have used a touch-up
Overall, I love this vehicle. I’m very happy with it, and I can’t say enough good things about it.

Excellent balance of performance and utility

2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat 4dr SUV AWD (6.2L 8cyl S/C 8A)
The 2021 Dodge Durango fresh has basically addressed all minor complaints I had. The interior is up there with the most competitive in the segment, LED headlights, revised suspension, 10" UConnect 5, and more. Combined with the R/T, SRT, and HC in particular, this is one well-rounded SUV that is able to check a lot of important boxes. Everything from performance to practical utility. It … has 3 rows, lots of interior room, good reliability, and is easier to maneuver than a full-size SUV. Opt for one of the V8 engines and you can have all of the performance you could ever want.
The only real negatives are a somewhat dated exterior due to its old platform and fuel economy isn't the best with the larger 6.2 and 6.4l V8 engines. But it's a reasonable compromise for the excellent performance and V8 rumble. The Durango also hasn't had the most amazing reliability track record, but my personal experience with the latest models has been excellent. It seems they've addressed the big issues.
I've had countless makes over the years, everything from Toyota, to GM, to Audi, and much more. And this is the first model I've bought twice. That alone says a lot. Overall, the Durango is an excellent and underrated SUV that's easy for me to recommend.
UPDATE FEB 2022: Still love the Durango, no issues. With the v8 dying off, the higher-end models (SRT/Hellcat) will only go up in value. Get one while you can!

Totally awesome. Never expect this from dodge
Brian's GT, 10/06/2020
2021 Dodge Durango GT Plus 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Quiet, smooth, powerful even with the v6 and head turner with gloss black 20s and reactor blue pearl coat. Sport mode will have you in the fast lane passing others in seconds. More options on the touchscreen than you can image. Totally impressed as I'm not historically a dodge guy. Bought this for all the above ... not as big as full size suv but darn close. Right, she'll suck some fuel … if you get into the 295 horses. Amazing get up for only 295 hp. Pleasure to drive all the way around.

My 2021Durango R/T

2021 Dodge Durango R/T 4dr SUV AWD (5.7L 8cyl 8A)
++Update: 17,000 miles, 20 months of ownership and Durango is still problem free. The Sirius was finally reloved.** Wanted an SUV with ample towing capacity. The Durango R/T is in a class by itself. I purchased a new 2021 model in Jan 2022. In addition to being able to tow my Polaris Ranger UTV, this vehicle is just fun to drive. I love the fact that Dodge kept actual buttons to … control climate and media/radio instead of everything being thru the Uconnect System. I'm hoping that non-towing gas mileage improves a couple of mpg better than the combined 15 mpg I'm currently getting. I've only driven 7,000 miles during 8 months of ownership. So far the only thing that has not worked is Sirius Vehicle Condition Report that is to be each month. A case is open for the this problem that Sirius can't resolve. They had me go to the dealer a couple of times but problem still not resolved. This is not a deal killer for me as long as the Durango cranks and runs without any problems.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2022 Dodge Durango, so we've included reviews for other years of the Durango since its last redesign.
