SHANGHAI, China — The MG CS concept, which previews MG's first production SUV, has been unveiled ahead of the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show.

The Chinese-owned British sports car maker says the MG CS concept was designed by Anthony Williams-Kenny, its British global design director.

Exterior cues include headlights with a multifaceted "shard" structure that refracts light in different colors and shape from the side.

The MG CS is aimed at the Nissan Juke.

No word yet on whether the production version will be offered in the U.S. or when it will debut in China.

MG Motor offered no powertrain details on the MG CS, but it is expected to be equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The company says the concept is aimed at "young, fashion-conscious people."

SAIC Motor, MG's parent company, sold a record 4.49 million vehicles in 2012, according to the company. SAIC Motor is the No 1 car manufacturer in China, building millions of GM and VW models under joint ventures.

It is little surprise that MG Motor continues to dabble in crossovers and SUVs instead of the brand's iconic roadsters. Last year, MG Motor unveiled the Icon, a crossover coupe concept, at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. A market for open-topped cars in China has yet to develop significantly.

The MG CS makes its world debut on April 20.

Edmunds says: The MG CS concept underscores SAIC's big ambitions for the MG brand.
