AFFALTERBACH, Germany — The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive set a new speed record for a production electric car at the Nurburgring.

Daimler announced that the electric AMG super sports car mastered the legendary track in under 8 minutes. The SLS AMG Electric Drive circled the Nurburgring Nordschleife or north loop in a record time of 7:56.234.

"Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer which makes it possible to circle the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically powered series production vehicle," said the automaker in a statement.

The car is the most powerful launched by the AMG division. The SLS AMG Electric Drive churns out 751 horsepower and has a top speed of 155 mph. It sprints from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds.

The Mercedes AMG electric car goes on sale this month in Germany at the U.S. equivalent of $552,552. There are no plans to sell the car in the U.S. It is the world's most expensive EV.

The overall electric car record was set last year by Toyota's TMG EV P002 race car.

Edmunds says: The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive sets another record — one that has nothing to do with price.
