Just the Facts:
  • The Ford F-250 and Dodge Charger are the most stolen vehicles, according to two separate reports by the Highway Loss Data Institute and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • The Ford F-250 has replaced the Cadillac Escalade as the favorite target of thieves, says the Highway Loss Data Institute.
  • The Dodge Journey, Volkswagen Tiguan, Audi A4, Acura RDX and Toyota Matrix are among the least stolen vehicles, said the HLDI.

ARLINGTON, Virginia — The Ford F-250 and Dodge Charger are the most stolen vehicles, according to two separate reports by the Highway Loss Data Institute and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Ford F-250 has replaced the Cadillac Escalade as the favorite target of thieves, says the Highway Loss Data Institute.

"General Motors has put a lot of effort into new antitheft technology, so that may help explain the decline in the Escalade's theft rate," said Matt Moore, vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute, in a statement. "On the other hand, sales of the Escalade have fallen in recent years, so there may be less of a market for stolen Escalades or Escalade parts."

Theft rates overall are declining, due in large part to the spread of ignition immobilizers, which prevent vehicles from being hot-wired. But HLDI says it cannot explain the theft rate of the F-250, which had a standard immobilizer for 2010-'12.

"Ford vehicles, including F-Series trucks, offer the latest in antitheft technologies and features to help provide customers with peace of mind for the security of their vehicles and belongings," wrote Kelli Felker, a Ford spokeswoman, in response to a query from Edmunds on Tuesday.

"Since the 1990s, Ford has offered a standard SecuriLock feature that helps prevent vehicles from being started without keys that have specially coded computer transponder chips. Ford continually monitors the performance of its vehicles and is confident locking mechanisms work properly in all of our vehicles. But, like any lock, thieves can overcome them."

The Ford F-250 is followed by the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ford F-350 and Cadillac Escalade on the HLDI's most-stolen list.

The Dodge Journey, Volkswagen Tiguan, Audi A4, Acura RDX and Toyota Matrix are among the least stolen vehicles, said the HLDI.

NHTSA says the Charger is followed by the Mitsubishi Galant and Cadillac STS on its most-stolen list.

Federal safety regulators tell consumers that July and August are the worst months for vehicle theft. Every 44 seconds, a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States and more than 40 percent of motor vehicle theft incidents are due to mistakes by drivers.

Edmunds says: There are lots of steps that consumers can take to avoid becoming a victim of auto theft.
