Just the Facts:
  • The base 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with the new LT1 6.2-liter V8 engine churns out 455 horsepower with the standard exhaust system and 460 hp with the optional $1,195 performance exhaust system.
  • In comparison, the base 2013 Chevrolet Corvette with the 6.2-liter V8 engine delivers 430 hp with the standard exhaust system and 436 hp with the optional performance exhaust system.
  • The horsepower numbers on the 2014 Corvette Stingray are better than GM first estimated.

DETROIT — The base 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with the new LT1 6.2-liter V8 engine churns out 455 horsepower with the standard exhaust system and 460 hp with the optional $1,195 performance exhaust system, General Motors confirmed on Tuesday.

In comparison, the base 2013 Chevrolet Corvette with the 6.2-liter V8 engine delivers 430 hp with the standard exhaust system and 436 hp with the optional performance exhaust system.

"It is the most powerful standard Corvette ever offered," said Monte Doran, a GM spokesman, in a phone conversation with Edmunds. "The thinking was we wanted to deliver more of everything."

When asked if that included beating the Ford Mustang in the horsepower department, Doran replied: "We're not thinking of Mustang."

The base 2013 Ford Mustang with a 3.7-liter V6 engine delivers 305 hp.

The horsepower numbers on the 2014 Corvette Stingray are better than GM first estimated. GM earlier estimated that the base Corvette would deliver 450 hp and 450 pound-feet of torque.

GM said the 2014 Corvette will sprint from zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

Of course, the base 2014 Corvette Stingray's horsepower numbers do not trump those of high-performance versions of the 2013 Corvette. For instance, the 2013 Corvette Z06 with the 7.0-liter V8 engine churns out 505 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The base 2014 Corvette Stingray's official torque numbers are 460 lb-ft when equipped with the standard exhaust system and 465 lb-ft when equipped with the optional performance exhaust system.

What has yet to be officially reported are EPA fuel economy numbers on the 2014 Corvette Stingray. As of Tuesday, GM was still only saying that the car will return "better than 26 mpg on the highway," according to Doran.

The 2013 Chevrolet Corvette with the 6.2-liter V8 engine and a six-speed manual transmission delivers 16 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

The 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the first Corvette to get Active Fuel Management or cylinder deactivation, which helps to conserve fuel.

Edmunds says: The long-awaited official performance numbers on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray are out — and they are impressive.

Sure, there will certainly be 'better' cars out there, but you simply can't argue with the fact that this thing will offer a lot of performance for the money. For those not needing the hardcore refinement of a 911 or the exclusivity of other more expensive exotics, the Corvette seems like a clear winner. Can't wait to see some road/track tests.

That's a lot of grunt for the money.

420 hp out of a 5.0 liter in a 30k car is more impressive to me!

Personally though I've always liked the form of an Aston, honestly for 52k it's rather difficult to turn down something like the Stingray. Performance within reasonable reach of the everyman is certainly refreshing.
