DETROIT — The 2015 Chevrolet City Express, a rebadged version of the Nissan NV200 compact van, will go on sale in fall 2014, General Motors said on Tuesday.

GM said the price of the 2015 Chevrolet City Express will be announced later.

The compact van market in the U.S. is heating up, with even luxury maker Mercedes-Benz studying whether to bring its Citan van here.

GM said it in a statement that it will "procure the vehicle from Nissan and distribute it through the Chevrolet dealer network."

"Our fleet customers have asked us for an entry in the commercial small van segment, so this addition to the Chevrolet portfolio will strengthen our position with fleets and our commercial customers," said Ed Peper, U.S. vehicle president of GM fleet and commercial sales.

The 2013 Nissan NV200, which is built in Cuernavaca, Mexico, went on sale in April. The base 2013 Nissan NV200 S starts at $20,985, including a $995 destination charge.

The 2015 Chevrolet City Express will compete with the Ford Transit Connect.

Edmunds says: This agreement between GM and Nissan underscores just how important the compact van market is becoming.
