WOODCLIFF LAKE, New Jersey — The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive , a diesel-power version of the automaker's flagship 7 Series sedan, will start at $83,425, when it arrives in U.S. showrooms this spring.

Pricing includes a $925 destination charge.

In comparison, the gasoline-power version of the 2014 BMW 740Li sedan starts at $78,925, including shipping.

The 740Ld xDrive will make its U.S. debut at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show in February.

The diesel engine is now available in the long-wheelbase version of the 7 Series.

The car is equipped with a 255-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder diesel engine linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The diesel model also features all-wheel drive. The 740Ld xDrive accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, according to BMW.

The EPA has not yet posted official fuel economy numbers on the 740Ld xDrive. But BMW said "other models equipped with this engine have seen a 25-30 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over their direct gasoline-powered counterparts." The new model will come with standard features including an "eco" driving mode and an auto start-stop system designed to conserve fuel.

The EPA said the gasoline-powered version of the 2014 BMW 740Li xDrive delivers 19 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway.

The chief rival of the BMW 740Ld xDrive is the 2014 Audi A8 L TDI, which is Audi's shorthand for diesel.

Edmunds says: Diesel vehicles typically offer greater driving range and better gas mileage than their conventional counterparts, so it might be worth a short wait for the BMW 740Ld xDrive.
