Low-Guilt Range Rover

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 Ultimate 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

There are limited choices for 3-row PHEV SUVs. We live in a city and charge at home but do regular roadtrips to our vacation house so wanted a vehicle that can do both. We considered the Mazda CX-90 and the new Lexus TX. The Mazda is nice for a Mazda but still lacks the premium feel and high seating position, and has no air suspension options. The PHEV version of the Lexus TX is hard to find currently and the lack of sunroof on the PHEV model is a weird choice by Lexus and a showstopper for us. Looked at the new Range Rover PHEV too but didn’t seriously consider it due to price and reliability concerns. So, the Volvo felt like the right choice, even though it’s an older design now. We got the Ultimate with the optional air suspension, which I think is worth it. Highlights so far: - seats are amongst the best I’ve ever sat in for comfort. I just wish they had a massage function for long road trips. - seating position is high and ride quality is excellent. - pure electric range is decent (enough for all our usual in-city school runs, etc) - electric-only acceleration is adequate so you can actually use it in Pure EV mode in practice - in hybrid mode, it is FAST because of the combined power of the engine and electric motors. This car is something of a sleeper - 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. In a straight line, it’s on par with the BMW, Audi, and Mercedes performance trims. - supremely quiet - the switch between pure electric mode and hybrid is actually quite smooth, unlike some of the reviews I had read had suggested. Perhaps they updated the hardware and/or software but there’s no massive lag in the engine kicking in when you floor it. - 3rd row seats are comfortable for kids and small to mid-sized adults - overall, big and roomy enough for us - no need to step up to a true full-size, truck-based SUV like a Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe/Navigator/Sequoia. Lowlights so far: - Apple car play is wired only. When you’ve gotten used to wireless in other cars, it’s a pain. - the built-in Google system is ok but there are certain apps which don’t work well. Eg we’ve never worked out how to get the built-in Waze app to work properly. The dream being that built-in Waze would display the map on the screen behind the steering wheel, like it does for Google Maps. So, we have to use Apple CarPlay for Waze, which is fine but only shows the map on the central screen. Many of the built-in Android apps are just not on par with the Apple iOS equivalents. - Sirius satellite radio is implemented as an app in the Google system, versus integrated into the car directly. This is mostly fine but it means you can’t see anywhere what station you’re on, what song is playing, etc unless you have the Sirius app in foreground on the screen. In most other cars, this info is shown somewhere even when you’re on other apps. - the charging port is manual and has 2 covers - inner and outer. This is a PHEV so the battery is quite small and you need to charge it pretty much daily if you want to avoid using gas. So, it seems an odd choice to add both an outer and inner flap that need to be opened and closed each and every time. Just an extra pain every day. Our Audi Etron has a nice, motorized EV charging port flap. - the car developed a rattle from the backseat after only 500 miles which is annoying for a new car, especially one which is so quiet so you can hear everything. Overall, close to a 5/5 but not quite.

2025 Volvo XC90 T8 Ultra 4dr SUV AWD w/6 Passenger Seating, w/Prod. End 11/24 (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

I’m leasing at 2025 XC90 T8 ultra plug in hybrid. Its beautiful design isn’t enough to prevent you from realizing you have been transported back to 2009 in terms of vehicle features. Aside from a pretty comfortable and smooth ride in the absolutely beautiful leather clad cabin - every single other aspect of this car is lacking. For $82,000 - Volvo should be ashamed. Starting with the cup holders. They fit maybe 1 out of 3 beverage vessels. Otherwise you’re either using your right elbow to hold them steady while you drive or youve got your hydroflask pinned between your thighs because it doesn’ stand a chance of pushing into the opening in the center console. Moving on to the fireball/atomic brightness of the windows 98 infotainment screen in the middle of the dashboard that has no controls for BRIGHTNESS. Night and day - defcon 5 brightness for no reason. Day after day, each element raises the question, “who did they build this for?l Even the most basic functions lie simply activating one of the memorized presets for the luxurious leather front seats (they are lovely) requires the user to hold the preset button until the seat and mirrors reach their preset positions. Hold it down until it stops. UNLESS you do it with the car door open. Only then, will the seat adjust to the driver’s stored position via a single press of the button. There is no apple CarPlay via Bluetooth, so your iPhone must be tethered in order to have contact information included for incoming calls or text messages —unless you want to import all of your contacts into Google. You also need that tether to charge your phone since the car doesn’t support wireless charging. In 2025, your 80K new car perpetually has a cable poking out from the center console where the only usb ports for the front of the car live. The suit hanger hooks in the backseats will accommodates no more than 2 hangers at a time, so make sure to limit those dry cleaning pickups. Did I mention the beautiful leather front seats? They really are, and the ultra level gets you ventilated ones. And you won’t have an opportunity to forget about them once activated. The amount of noise they generate is like a mini wind tunnel, which I guess is fractionally more soothing then the barely muffled exterior noise you usually hear. The gas/battery level indicator is completely unreliable and often jumps 10-20 miles up or down suddenly. Parking assist via the sensors and cameras - barely useful. The alarms blare at nothing, or neglect to activate for real hazards. Also, you cannot adjust the sensitivity of the side mirror blind spot indicators. Then again they are positioned so that you don’t notice them without actively turning your head to look anyway. Also - the users manual is useless. The tire pressure indicator alerts you of low pressure - but no indication of which tire. So you pull over to a gas station and kneel down next to your car to check them one by one. Apparently there’s an auto windshield wiper function. You can’t just select that as your default setting though. You have to press a button each time you turn on the car to activate it. Isn’t that the opposite of Auto? The homelink button works perfectly! Does Volvo get a star for that? It’s another company’s product right? I do appreciate there is a headrest fold down butting for the middle and back row seats to increase visibility. Unfortunately, you’ll need to crawl in the raise them back into position manually if you’re having adults in your car post fold. No button to raise them back up. You can lock or unlock your car from the Volvo app. You’re also able to cool the car remotely prior to getting in on a hot day. Super cool - I would prefer having the little slide out extender on the driver’s visor that came standard on Indian rickshaws from the early 70s to preserve my ability to see when driving in full sun myself. But cool! The Volvo XC90 plug in hybrid is a very pretty car. The leather seats are gorgeous. I have the bone colored leather which isn’t available everywhere. I love looking at it and sitting in it. I don’t like how long I have to look to find information that I want about the car I spent so much money on. It’s almost like they’re hiding something…perhaps it’s the fully loaded 2009 Honda Civic EX’s features packed into a beautiful 2025 “luxury” vehicle’s shell and it worked on me. I was totally fooled You’ll get better bang for your buck elsewhere, take it

i’ve had my volvo for less then a month and have nothing but issues. Remote Start Problem: When I use the remote start feature via the Volvo app, the car starts but does not fully engage when I get inside. The system prompts me to turn the ignition knob, and even when I press the brake and turn the knob, the car does not fully start. I then have to turn the car off through the app and restart it manually with the knob. Apple CarPlay Connectivity: CarPlay works intermittently, often disconnecting after a few days of use. The system displays a message stating that the USB is not connected and that the paired phone cannot be located. After performing a hard reset, CarPlay briefly reconnects, but this issue continues, requiring multiple connections and disconnections of my phone. Sirius Xm will just pause when listening to music out of no where. I have taken the vechile in for service 2 times the first time after they did a “update” the cigarette lighter blew and a fuse needed to be fixed. Took it back the 2nd time and not even after 1 hour of having the car back the check engine light is on. Per the dealerships, this is a known Volvo defect with NO ETA on the fix. Volvo appears to have a latent defect with its cars, and communication is being avoided. The fact that I purchased my first Volvo for the safety aspect (previous Jeep owner) and this is the outcome of choice is mind-blowing. Not only are the cars not safe, but your lack of care for your customer’s safety makes this more concerning.

The in-lane and distance behind car features have been degraded, cheapened and trash. The car drives jerky on interstate. No actual hard copy owner’s manual. It’s all on the center screen. So much for bringing inside to read through it. Have to sit in the car to read it making it very uncomfortable.
