The 2024 Volvo S60 Recharge provides a bridge between the worlds of gas and electric vehicles. Its electric motor is powerful enough to deliver a near full-EV experience for more than 40 miles of driving. Once the battery is depleted, the gas engine kicks on and it runs as an efficient hybrid with more than 30 mpg combined. The interior features luxury-grade materials and very comfortable front seats. Subpar technology features are the biggest thing holding this stylish sedan back.Read full review

Overview
One of today's underrated compact luxury sedans, the Volvo S60 doesn't typically find its way into the conversation with class standouts like the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4. And while the 2024 Volvo S60 isn't as athletic as those rivals, or offer Mercedes-like indulgence, it provides its own brand of ice-cool luxury, with high-quality cabin materials, sublime seat comfort, and advanced driver and safety aids. It also offers a rarity for the class: a plug-in hybrid option. For drivers who prefer fluidity to fireworks in a luxury sedan, the S60 earns its place alongside its more vocal peers.

Edmunds spotlight: Plug in for power
Among the features that set the 2024 Volvo S60 apart from its rivals — exceptionally comfy seats, understated style, standout Bowers & Wilkins audio system — is its optional plug-in powertrain. The Recharge T8, as it's called, pairs a rechargeable electric motor with a turbocharged gas engine for both increased fuel efficiency (the EPA rates it at up to 530 miles of range on a full tank and battery) and about 40 miles of all-electric range. The S60 Recharge also adds a wallop of horsepower and nearly double the low-end torque of the standard gas engine, and it can refill its battery in five hours on a 240-volt charger. We'd take the Recharge for its extra performance and efficiency, even with the nearly $10K premium.
Competitors to consider
The compact luxury sedan class is flush with choices, starting with established benchmarks like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Then there are more affordable alternatives like the Cadillac CT4 and Genesis G70. All offer sharper handling compared to the S60 (the Mercedes leans into its luxury roots more than any performance pedigree), which is closer in execution to the similarly cushy Lexus IS 350. The S60 has an edge with its optional plug-in hybrid, though. BMW offers the only other rechargeable rival.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8.5/10
How does the S60 Recharge drive? At Edmunds' test track, the S60 Recharge sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. It doesn't feel like it will run out of steam at any point up to and past highway speeds. The strong electric motor also means that when you're driving it in EV mode (which Volvo calls "Pure"), you don't have to baby the throttle at all. It feels quick and light on just electricity, with enough power to even merge onto the freeway without too much effort.
The brakes are predictable, and the transition between the regenerative braking and physical brakes feels smooth. The S60 Recharge also has more handling chops than its tires and styling would suggest.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the S60 Recharge? Volvo is known for its supremely comfortable seats, and those inside the S60 don't disappoint. The front seats also offer lots of adjustability. We also like the S60's ride — the suspension smooths out bumps and cracks quickly and the S60 remains composed even over undulating surfaces. The cabin is also very quiet, especially when you're using partial or fully electric power.
The climate control system, however, could be easier to use. It requires diving into the confusing touchscreen interface, but once you're there things aren't great. The system needs consistent readjusting to reach your desired temperature and there aren't many fan speed choices, so it feels like you're choosing between on and off without much dexterity.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? The S60's confusing mix of hard buttons and screen-scrolling leaves us wanting something more intuitive, and getting a grasp of the steering wheel controls that come without labels can take a while. It's a shame because an excellent range of adjustability in both front seats, coupled with stellar outward visibility, makes the cabin a truly comfortable place.
The S60 has good-size door cutouts that enable passengers to get in and out without too much bending, though the car does sit quite low so taller folks might have to drop down some to get into their seats. Once inside, there is good space all around in the front, but the back seat can get tight for passengers about 6 foot and over, who will be left wanting for headroom.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? Google is heavily integrated into this Android-based infotainment system, and the native maps application has been replaced with a car version of Google Maps. There's even an app store to download the things you might use regularly on your smartphone. But there is no more Android Auto integration. You only get Apple CarPlay and it has to connect via a USB cable. On the upside, the Google-based voice command system is pretty helpful, though you'll have to log in to it using your Google account. We highly recommend the optional Bowers & Wilkins stereo system and its outstanding concert-hall modes.
The S60's adaptive cruise control works well to keep a set distance from the vehicle ahead. The operation of the lane keeping system, however, can be overly busy. Some of our drivers preferred to leave it off.

Storage
6.5/10
How’s the storage? The S60 Recharge suffers in terms of interior storage. The center console only has about an inch's worth of depth. That's enough to lay in a phone or some keys, but that's about all you're going to fit. A couple of cupholders and slim cubbies round out the storage options for the front row. On the upside, the wide trunk is just as big as the non-hybrid S60's. At 11.6 cubic feet, it's adequate for the class, and you can fold the seats down to accommodate longer items.
The roomy back row and highly adjustable front seats make for an accommodating area for bulky child seats. The car is rather low to the ground, which may force you to crouch while you install a seat. But the anchor points and tethers are easy to reach, and there is room to safely secure two seats in the back.

Fuel Economy
9/10
How economical is the S60 Recharge? The S60 Recharge offers an EPA-estimated 40 miles of all-electric range. After that, it's estimated to get 31 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Both figures now handily beat those put up by BMW's 330e sedan, the Volvo's closest competitor, and the S60 Recharge has a lot more power.
We drove our test car on our mixed-driving evaluation route with a full battery charge to start to test its electric range. It covered 46.7 miles using electric power, though we should note that it kicked into hybrid mode and activated the gas engine for about a mile with around 5 miles of electric-only range left according to the trip computer. After that, our S60 Recharge got 36.7 mpg on our test route, which beat the EPA estimate by a good margin.

Value
8/10
Is the S60 Recharge a good value? This luxury sedan looks and feels the part. The interior is full of authentic leather and metal, with an airtight cabin that creates a quiet ride. Considering its advanced powertrain, the S60 Recharge seems appropriately priced.
Volvo includes an industry-standard four years/50,000 miles for both the basic coverage and powertrain warranty, though several other brands offer more generous packages. The S60 also comes with four years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance and three years/36,000 miles of free maintenance.

Wildcard
9/10
On the outside the S60 Recharge is a clean-looking and sophisticated luxury sedan, but it's hiding a secret side that is both efficient and fun. The 455 combined hp from the gas engine and electric motor gives the Volvo plenty of speed, and it has more handling chops that you'd expect as well. And on top of that, you get well over 40 miles of electric range.
Which S60 does Edmunds recommend?
The base trim comes well equipped, but we think it's worth the stretch to the midlevel Plus trim. It builds on the Core trim with upgrades that make daily drives more pleasant, including leather upholstery, cabin air purifier, and additional safety aids such as adaptive cruise control and lane-centering for reduced stress on long drives. A surround-view camera and front and rear parking sensors also make parking easier.

2024 Volvo S60 Recharge T8 Plus Black Edition 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
Just completed first 1000 miles on my 2024 S60 Recharge. A lot of positives so far. Extremely comfortable, very quiet cabin, user friendly touch screen and excellent performance. Since most of my daily driving is less than 45 miles I use very little gas, currently at 156mpg for all miles driven.
Cabin could use more storage spaces, but no big deal. I leased before the year ended to get … the $7500 off of capitalized cost. Have the option to purchase at lease end for $31k.
No additional garage wiring was required, just use standard 110 outlet and it charges overnight. If you install a 220 circuit charging is much faster.
Now seven months into lease, no problems at all. MPG has been as high as 335. Recent 500 mile road trip drops that down. Transition from battery to engine is quite seamless. One additional bonus, the Vapor Gray never looks dirty..Sorry to hear Volvo dropping this model after 2025.
Unable to control charging

2024 Volvo S60 Recharge T8 Plus Black Edition 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
For reasons best known to Volvo, they elected not to allow drivers to control charging for this PHEV. I spent months of trying to find out why I could not control the charging schedule with the Volvo app. It turns out Volvo enabled only fully electric vehicles to be controlled that way. How is this leadership for a brand that pretends to be at the vanguard of electrification of … cars?
Since I made the above comments earlier this year, Volvo has not yet made any improvements to their Volvo Cars app to allow control over charging. Perhaps reflecting their lack of vision on this aspect, the company has walked back it commitment to have an all-electric automotive lineup by 2030.
