For the price and condition this was a fantastic purchase. My first car forty- six years ago was a Beetle Bug and although the air-cooled engine is no longer, the reliability and technology are very much in the product. My wife and I have no regrets. We have a loaded SUV and she claimed the Bug as hers before we returned home from the purchase. It was also a wonderful purchase experience as we were already qualified for credit and knew what we wanted having done extensive on-lineresearch.I One year later - March, 2017 My wife and I are still very satisfied with the Beetle and could not be happier. It is a second vehicle that we garage for about six months of the year as we go north to Maine with our SUV. That being said, we put 3,000+ mph on it and are more than pleased. It is a very good product which has protected its reliability. It is true that my first was German made and this was manufactured in Mexico, but VW has certainly maintained the integrity of the Bug!!! We traded our former Beetle for another one a year older with lower mileage. It has been another year and our new "Bug" is just as loved and appreciated. It's a 2013 convertible with about 26,500 miles at present that we affectionately refer to as our "Platinum Grey Ghost". We try to keep it well maintained and have no plans to either sell or trade it. Another WONDERFUL car and if I can hyperbolize, an integral family member!!! My wife always had her heart set on a convertible. It was in mint condition so we traded our other. It seems another year has come and gone when I hear from you folks at Edmunds. The 2013 convertible beetle has been garage for almost five months which is kosher. We return to Florida on October 23 and that is the due date to place the "bug" back on the road. In turn, our Santa Fe Sport will go into the garage only to be used for a periodic long drive with the pooches. As to our grey ghost, it will get a fresh oil change and will probably do another three thousand of so miles before being stored for another five months or so. She will probably not the 30,000 mile mark between November and April. I am about to turn seventy-one and still find the Beetle a fun car to drive. I find it an easy car to enter and exit. It gets me a zippy go being a 2.5 five cylinder. I loved the Tornado Red 2014, but my wife always wanted a convertible and what better place to have one but central Florida. If there is any drawback, it is that it does not have anywhere the cargo space of the former red devil. Nevertheless, it has everything my wife and I need and she is extremely happy with it. That is what counts after all. I look forward to washing and waxing it. It's impeccable to us and paid for....what more can I ask. As for our Hyundai SUV, it is going to turn about 50k miles by the time we drive from Maine back to our primary dogs and that is another vehicle I am extremely happy with having purchased it new. I just purchased a new set of tires for it so we are good to go. I always enjoy your auto reviews at Edmunds.

1st VW - 1st diesel

2014 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0L TDI 2dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbodiesel 6AM)

I was looking for a 2 door hatchback on Edmonds.com and frankly, didn't know the Beetle was a hatchback. After reading the general reviews I concentrated on the TDI rather than the gas 2.0 Turbo as it requires premium gas. (I have a fairly long commute) I test drove the TDI as was totally impressed with the ride. This car is tight. My biggest concern was how the TDI would handle acceleration onto the interstate and passing at high speed.... Wow! This car can keep up with anything. The fit and finish is excellent and you can't beat the styling. I bought it on the spot. I've only had it a month but I can't say anything negative about it. It's a kick to drive.

NEW BEETLE TDI IS A GREAT VW!

Our new Beetle is our 7th VW. The new Beetle TDI is a far cry from our 2003 model with 490,000 miles. It still gets 47mpg, the new one is not so good, but at 41-45 that ain"t bad. It rides like a much larger car, but is fun to drive and quick in both acceleration and twisty roads and traffic. My wife is very impressed, since she drives it to work because of the gas mileage. Our previous jetta topped out at about 25 mpg, but was also a great car. The Beetle TDI is an ideal short or long trip vehicle, well appointed and much roomier that we imagined. My wife has owned much more expensive cars like Mercedes and Audi, but the Beetle TDI is her favorite. Go Figure.

Rline check. 6 Speed manual. Check. Killer Stereo. Check. Turbo. Check. Horsepower Uniqueness from EVERY OTHER car on the road. Check. $17000 for a used 1 year old with 20K miles on it. Check. MPG. Check. Here's the deal folks...you aren't driving a more fun, reliable, affordable car on the market. And I looked at ALL of them. Unfortunately at the time, there we no Convertibles for sale used. I put this car up against Audi's and BMWs. But go ahead and spend the money on those others if trying to impress the rest of the road is your thing. For me, I look at the Audi and think...what a collosal waste of money. I don't care HOW good that car is. The ONLY NEGATIVE THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS CAR IS YOU NEED TO REALLY PAY ATTENTION WHEN BACKING UP. VISIBILITY ISNT GOOD. I've come to use the camera, which is against my nature. I just pay double attention when backing up. Here is a an idea of how much I like this car. I LOVE MY MOTORCYCLE, and I have driven this instead ON MANY OCCASIONS and it had nothing to do with weather or storage. It had to do with FUN OF DRIVING.

Former '72 Bug owner; and the fetish remains. The legendary, iconic shape is there, and I really like the squatty, stronger look of the 2013. With a diesel motor, how can you lose. The diesel displacement is such that EPA emission add-ons were not required, therefore maintenance is oil, filters, battery, and tires - no DEF fluid. Attaching the diesel to the DSG transmission is a great move for the Beetle - athletic/sure-footed car. The cabin is quiet, comfortable, sporty, and with a great sound-system. Skims comfortably down the highway at 80 mph averaging 41.3 mpg [verified at the pump]. Wife and I are in late 50s; and this car is a big source of driving pleasure for either short or long trips. Based on experience to date, I expect no less reliability than the other Beetle diesel owners have seen thru the years. I can't think of any cons. Also, we obtained this car as a post-EPA settlement/rework vehicle that was certified pre-owned thru VW. Really good value with VW standing behind product. I'd highly recommend for fun and economy. 06/13/19: First oil change - $9.94 Mann Filter HU719/7X, $22.00 Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W40, $20 labor local shop - very good value for a diesel oil change. Will repeat every 5000 miles. Much driving pleasure. 08/12/20: Just returned from Rocky Mountain National Park touring in this car; perfect going over Trail Ridge Rd. Was the best trip car; saved us tons on fuel and was not uncomfortable for the long haul (we traveled over 2500 miles). This is a highway car. It's got 29k on the odometer now; tight, spry, and athletic as the day we got it. Audio sounds great, too. Thinkin' 'bout adding a Golf TDI ......

If you've been looking into the 2015 Beetle, and can't decide between another car you like. Don't hesitate any longer, if you like a sleek modern interior that will wow all your passengers, with the joys of a comfortable ride. This car is for you. Not only is this car fun to drive it's even more fun with the turbo injection and sport mode.

2016 Volkswagen Beetle R-Line SEL PZEV 2dr Hatchback (2.0L Turbo 4cyl 6AM)

This car is the perfect car for a single person. I'm not saying this as my own opinion either. My 7 friends and I, have had older beetles and now we all have 2015 or 2016 beetles, all in different colors (one has a Dune, a few have the basic and the rest have the R lines). from my experience, the beetle is and always has been the best car. Don't get me wrong, I disliked my first beetle in 2001, thought it was very ugly but my friend gave it to me for free. And that was the most reliable and the fastest car I've had. That car lasted me until I decided to get a brand new 2016 beetle. The beetle is great in winter and has all the features needed: heated seats/mirrors, navigation, backup camera, ESP/ABS, sunroof....and there's a lot more. It is quick and small and most people underestimate this car, they think it's a girly car. But me and my friends have always had beetles, along with second cars for fun, and the beetle is always the best everyday car. Also, with a brighter beetle, you're less likely to get pulled over! I've gotten away with so much in this car that I didn't get away with in my mustang. So right now I own a Dune Beetle, a GSR and a RLine (after selling my mustang for the GSR). I also always get compliments on my car and everyone wants to ride in it. All the 2016 and 2015 beetles ride nice, smooth, and stable, you can't hear anything outside really and the car doesn't jiggle like the older models. I have had no problems with my beetles and don't even need winter tir in winter! Get this car!

I traded a '16 Wolfsburg Edition (a base model with heated leatherette seats and monster mats) for a '16 Classic (also a base model, but with Apple Connect, multi-function steering wheel and a fabulous retro interior which features a grey and white check cloth seating with surrounding saddle-colored leatherette). It also has retro wheels, which are cool. I can't think of any car (and I used to own a Mini base model) more suited for a one- or two-person family and especially a commuter car. It's cool, still a bit rare, the 1.8L turbo goes like stink and drives wonderfully. Plus, with $5000+ off MSRP for the many remaining '16s, a bargain. Leases are great too. Around Metro Colorado you can lease a Wolfsburg for $159/mo/48 months/10K--there happen to be several still around at one particular dealership. Anyway, I love it and the interior reminds me of our '59 Beetle which we owned in the '60s when I grew up in Holland.

Every time I get in my Beetle, it puts a smile on my face! Tons of style in this Classic, along with acceleration and mileage. I love this car... first new car I have purchased in 19 years. The only poor feature in this car is the lack of the ability to recline the front seats-It is really a little annoying for long distance travel with passengers.

Update at 28k miles - traded in a 2012 GTI for my Beetle. At the time, I liked adding the Navigation and the style of the Beetle Classic - with unique interior and exterior styling cues. It was/is like driving a classic car with modern features and driving dynamics. The new Golf is a more practical choice all-around but the Beetle styling and vintage vibe won me over. A few quirks and minor complaints: wind noise around the window seals; the gas cap detached from its tether - twice; my friend almost broke the sun shade making an adjustment; the suspension is not sporting, making this a blvd cruiser, not a canyon carver; and the white cloth seating is, as you might expect, starting to get dirty and has a few stains. Overall, none of these items reduce my enjoyment of the car or the compliments I have received. I can get great gas mileage on long freeway trips (35 mpg at 70mph!) but doesn't do much better than my GTI in mixed city driving - averaging 26-27 most stops. The turbo has enough zip to handle traffic and not feel sluggish, but using it penalizes your mpg. I recently drove a new Golf Sportwagon and would argue that the transmission (and same engine) in that car, along with the updated platform, makes for a much more pleasant drive. Buy the Beetle for looks and you still get a very nice, stylish car, but if you want the best VW in this price range - buy a Golf.

Retro design with minor flaws

I've always been a Beetle fanatic since they came out with the second generation in 1998 when I was 8 years old! This 2014 Beetle was my 3rd Beetle since obtaining a license at 17 years old in 2007. I was obsessed with the car! It was a great color and loved the acceleration compared to my 2005 Beetle with only 115HP. I have driven so much in the last 2.5 years of owning it! I have racked up 70,000 miles in just 2.5 years! Yes thats a lot and I haven't had any major repairs yet! Although i'm getting nervous for the water pump/ timing belt replacement that comes between 80-100k miles and the dealerships charge about $1k. Besides that I only take my car to my local VW dealerships for oil changes. The only problem I've had with my car are the breaks. Even when I had my car for a few months they started to squeak when I would slow down. Especially during cold temperatures! Sometimes it gets very loud and my passengers are like wow you need new breaks already? I did take it into the dealership and they said they would have to send a request for them to replace it for free since it was still under the warranty. weeks went by and i never received a phone call. and summer rolled around so it made less noise and it didn't bother me. Before I knew it I was over the mileage for the warranty. Hopefully when i replace my brakes sometime this year the noise will stop. Another problem is my passenger seat sucks! I'm assuming it broke somehow. When someone wants to get in the back seat i pull the seat forward but when i push it back, it goes ALL the way back and the upper part of the seat does not come forward like it should. I have to aggressively pull the seat back with all my force and my passengers are again shocked! Another interesting tidbit is i am a 215 lb male and i noticed either of the front seats if you are heavy, and tend to move or when you make a turn, the seats will squeak! Its' kinda embarrasing if my friends are in the car. Also, I think my speakers really suck! I mean i know i don't expect the base speakers to sound like Fender, but I was in my friends 2011 Jetta and his speakers sounded way better than miles. I was surprised considering mines a 2014. The Beetle that I got happened to be one of the last 2.5L 5-cyl engines made.. a few months later they rolled out with the 1.8L's. Like I said I haven't had any major repairs or been stranded. I know I am getting close to 100k miles and i just get very nervous thinking about what i may need to replace. and since i am a student and work part time in California, money plays a factor. One thing i also don't like are the seats, they are in a way uncomfortable especially on road trips. I am 6'2" and i will get back pain. It feels like i am sitting on top of something. I don't really like it. The gas mileage is not too bad and not too good. I feel like this car shouldn't be your everyday car. But its mine. Its definitely fun to drive. I really wanted the turbo 2.0L r-line but i can't afford the higher gas grade or any major repairs in the future especially since its a turbo. One thing i did notice is that since 2010ish, VW has downgraded their interior quality by using cheap materials which makes it sad. One thing about the newer Beetle is that we all know its retro design, but when you're actually driving and holding onto the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 marks it really does feel like you're almost driving the older ones. not sure how to explain it but it may have to do with the steering wheel design/structure.

2015 Volkswagen Beetle R-Line w/Sunroof, Sound 2dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6AM)
9 of 12 people found this review helpful

This is not an economy car. It is a mid-level performance car, so don't think 70s Beetle, think poor man's Porsche- especially if you go for the R-Line. That is not a criticism, the car is awesome if this fits your needs. Another thing to consider is that the R-Line takes premium gas. So if fuel costs are a concern or you need a daily driver, get something else. This car is meant mainly for people who really enjoy driving and don't need it for daily things like getting to work 5 day a week. I only have it because I am an amateur hockey player and need it to get to rinks 2-3 days week. The rest of the time, it sits in front of my house looking very cool. But I still needed a car, so I figured why not get something I really want, instead of something I need for work? I take the train to work in Chicago. So the car perfect in that respect. Buy this car because you want it, not because you need it, and you'll be very happy. Update: one year later and still loving this car!

VW should advertise this car. It is so much fun to drive. Gets better gas mileage than advertised. Faster than 2014 GTI. Great handling. Powerful Turbo Motor. Looks like old bugs again...Only.... the new one has a great heater......AND it Is really safe. My R-line beats up on classic muscle cars. I love my R-Line and plan to keep it forever! Test drive one. The R-Line Beetle sells itself. With new Civic having engine troubles this year 2016...Time to look at a Beetle? Because of my R-Line I am building a 1965 VW Beetle. Got me back into VW's as a hobby! Again; I love my VW Beetle R-Line Coupe. It honors the old Beetle and has the tech to make it relevant now! UPDATE: 3 years owning this car now, and I love it even more! BEST BEETLE EVER MADE. Test drive one and you will understand. Even the 1.8T is quick compared to other cars in the range. My sister and parents now own modern Beetles and a New Beetle convertible. Unitronic and APR for this car! Stage 1 will blow your mind. Peace, Love, and VW! (#1 Automaker in the world at time of this update. 2-10-2017) Year 4 ......2018 My 2014 RLine continues to amaze me. Best car I have ever owned. APR tuning now offered thru VW. Cars in high altitude should stay away from Unitronic. Trip to Boulder and a run up Tanglewood. 34 mpg. The lil Bug carved up windy road like butter. The car is smooth. The VW Beetle is best car in ARX Rallycross. Will be 2018 Champs. 4th year of total racing domination over Ford, Honda, Subaru (Subaru fans hate the Beetles), etc...... I am a fact guy. The car continues to be my favorite by far. VW dealer has supported me on any need. Great experience owning my Beetle. 2014 R Line is the best bug ever! Peace! #savethevwbeetle 2019 Update My favorite car ever. Period. VW should have put in a TCD button. Rear Headrests affect rear visibility. Rear seats are comfortable, but not for big people. APR is a way better company than Unitronic. APR now offered through VW. This supposed to be last year for the car. That is a shame. 12 up never got love from new CEOs. Killing it will be another mistake by VW management. #savethevwbeetle It’s time to build an Electric Bug. If you can find a used R Line in good condition; buy it! The current model is less car. Still great, but the R Line is its own beast. It’s the best bug ever. 2019 update Drove from Elizabeth, Colorado to Roswell, New Mexico. Love this car! With my APR stage one I have all the power I could want. My added traction control delete button makes the car launch like a beast . Killing the beetle this year; Volkswagen is making the biggest mistake they’ve ever made in the history of the company. #savethevwbeetle #foreverbeetle #ARX #Rallycross The current 2019 model is less car than my R Line. Also a huge mistake. Also the car was not offered in a manual for 2019. Also a mistake. It is a retro car. I bought another Bug to protect my R Line from weather and idiots. It’s to special to be a daily driver. Again; it’s the best car I have ever owned .....It has been extremely reliable! 2020 update! Text: R Line was a special Beast. 2014 was a special year. I would not trade my Beetle R Line for anything. This is my favorite car that I have owned period. Mine has 250 hp. It runs with muscle cars. It handles better than those cars. More fun on a mountain road than anything I’ve ever driven! If you can find a nice R Line Beetle; buy it! It will make you happy! #savethevwbeetle Update: 2022 The car is worth as much as I paid for it. That speaks for itself. 110% of black book. Best bug ever, and the biggest mistake by VW ever to quit making it. My 2014 R-Line Beetle continues to be my favorite car.

The interior sold me!

I love this car, I’ve previously owned a 2006 2.5l Beetle and ran it until it died. When I was looking for a new car I couldn’t help but notice how cool the interior is on the classic coupe! It stood out to me. So far I have modified it with lowering springs and spacers. Soon to have an exhausted and new wheels. This was a comfortable drive even before and currently after. The speakers are clear and loud, also include a funky light set up interior wise with 3 colors; red, white and blue. The simple hit of leather with white plaid cloth really has people in love. I’ve received many compliments on the car itself. Super spacious trunk and I’ve moved my entire dorm room with it. I can’t wait for all the miles I’ll put on her. Going from an older interior and estimating everything to a car that tells me every bit of info is awesome. I highly recommend to either new drivers or simply a fun car to zip around in. It’s more than just the Beetle name that people love and know so well. I could go on for hours about the positives.

In my opinion, the VW Beetle engineered should all be offered other jobs somewhere else. The car is VERY noisy and a with a very rough ride. Road noise is very loud, this cars seems to have no insulation to buffer outside sound, especially tire noise. VW chooses to not have a Garage door controller. How stupid that seems. The Vehicle does not come with license plate holders, they are dealer provided, the dealer we went through used very cheap ugly holders, and wanted to drill 1/2 holes in both bumpers to attach them. We declined, and will have to find our own solution. thanks VW. About the best thing I can say about this car is it looks nice. The interior is nice, and electronics seem to be pretty good. Backup camera, and sensors work well. Our 2006 VW Bug was a diesel, and was twice as quiet and had a garage door opener that worked great, I for one am sorry we traded up to this vehicle, I was disappointed. I think my wife is also, but won't admit it since she just had to have one.

This is a Great car! Agile, fun to drive, lots of power, great on gas, and very cool looking. Have had many beetles thru-out my life, and I'm loving my 2014 turbo R-Line! Closest they've come to the Karmin Ghia design for awhile with a truly gorgeous interior, and exterior even with the duck-tail. A 'Drivers Wanted' dream! A bit pricey, but worth it to me. So sorry about the diesels, but I will always be a VW affectionado!

My 2008 beetle died so I asked the dealership to give me any other beetle they had. They gave me a red basic trim beetle year 2014. I really like the car (though I wish it was a more expensive beetle with navigation, turbo and sunroof but it is not). I am 5’2 and it fits me perfectly! I am always complimented on it, people ask me what year it is and I do decorate the car for the holidays and people seem to enjoy seeing my big, it makes people smile. I find the car kinda classy looking and a little exotic looking, I don’t see many other 2014 beetles driving around my city either. It stands out too, especially red. It gets ok gas, but I wouldn’t be the best judge because i Don’t drive much and this is my only car. My issue is people always feel the need to pass me while driving! It seems like people think beetles are slow even if I’m going over the speed limit. The basic beetle doesn’t have turbo but it has an S mode that seems to make it faster but honestly, it does seem to have slow acceleration and seems to go pretty slow up hill! But once it starts, I find it goes pretty fast. When I turn on the ignition I’m please to find a very strong sounding engine, it’s not v6 or v8 but it’s nice enough. The only issue I’m finding mechanically is that the windshield wiper fluid is constantly needing to be refilled! It is good in snow BUT one issue in winter is that sometimes the windows freeze shut! The windows are frameless so they drop down to open the door and sometimes ice or whatever gets in the windows and will not come down when you go to open it and could cause the battery to short out then you have to reprogram the windows. Just a little annoying. I’ve learned to just cover the car with a tarp so ice can’t get on it since it parks outside as it’s only a problem early mornings. I’d recommend a turbo beetle. Would not recommend the diesel beetle as it drives like a little truck, not sporty at all. Also wish the basic came with automatic power seats.

Road test, and make sure manufacturer maintenance has been done. Perky car to drive with turbo, feels solid, and feels comfortable and ready to take on road trip. Dealer made purchase easy, car hadnt had 2nd manufacturer maint when pruchsed becasue of low miles. A special car for me and my family, a surprise. Have had many VW's in past, never a Beetle, and this is very nice.

When you're battery dies...

When you're battery dies. It's will give you every warning in the book. Key not in range. Key defective. Brake error. Parking break. When you're battery finally fails (no indication other than the key) it basically does what a normal car does. Doesn't start. Bit goes though this weird every error thing. I REPLACED THE BATTERY IN MY FOR. it was a stupid dead battery. I wasn't stupid enough to pay the reprogramming fee to discover this (99$) thank God. I needed a jump and a new battery. The car didn't indicate that at all. Runs great now.

What's not to like about this car? Perfect for empty nesters. With the back seats folded down, lots of room to haul a bunch. Great looks and fantastic acceleration with the 210 hp turbo. It can easily get you in trouble. Rock out with the Fender Audio System and the sunroof open. Sharp 19" mags finish it off. Feel like a kid again!

I leased a new 2016 Beetle Wolfsburg Edition. If you think of the Beetle as a two-seater to zip around town you won't be disappointed. The back seats are too upright and not very comfortable and cargo space is limited. Be careful backing out of parking spaces as the view is obstructed by the large pillars and back seat headrests. That being said, the Beetle has plenty of power and maneuvers quite well. The unique look of the Beetle, as always, makes it stand out. Overall, it's fun to drive and so far, has been reliable with no mechanical issues. Update: After my lease I bought my Beetle. It still runs great. I'm two months shy of 5 years with this car and 40 miles short of 50,000 miles. I removed the back seat headrests, so my rear-view vision is better. That sounds like a minor point, but it made a big difference. Another Update: It's been 8 years, 67,000 miles, two recalls, two battery replacements, and regular maintenance. My Beetle is still running strong. At a time of inflated auto prices (new and used) it feels good to have a reliable car.

Volkswagen gets "F" as far as I am concerned. I love the car but I have had it for a month but do not drive it because I want an invisible Bra for it and not even VW can help me. I want mud flaps for the car and you cannot get it. The Cargo mat if you have the speakers in the door, you have to cut it yourself to fit around the speaker in the truck. Terrible. Nice car but VW needs to make accessories available for the models they produce. Perhaps they are too worried about cheating on Fuel mileage tests than taking care of the people who would like to enhance the image of their vehicles.

Terrific to drive, a true driver's car. I'm 6'4" and I fit in nicely. Excellent gas mileage, 30mpg on daily driving! Premium gas only.... The fit and finish is EL CHEAPO. Flimsy upholstery and lots of hard plastic. Rear seats are "pretend", it should be classified as a 2+2...Interior components fail, having seat railings and the seatbelt changed under warranty. Also, several issues with engine oil leaks were fixed under warranty, and I am a rather gentle driver, so reliability is not all that good at all. It looks beautiful, it's designed to accommodate all drivers, even very tall ones. It's great on gas and, with the GTI engine, it's a BLAST!
