Best two row SUV for the money

2023 Hyundai Santa Fe
I wanted a mid size two row AWD SUV with the newer technology and traded my trusty 4Runner. There’s lots to like about my first Hyundai and some niggling things I’ll mention. It has the exact same exterior dimensions as my 4Runner, but it has more room in both the front and rear seats so they fit my 6’ 2” better. The seats are more comfortable, it has more power, the handling is better, … I’m getting 40% better mpg on regular and the cargo capacity is the same. I’m enjoying all the technology, especially the adaptive cruise with stop and go, the blind spot cameras and warning, the lane keeping assist, and the HUD. After 5 months and 5k miles I haven’t had anything go wrong and the mpg amazingly matches the window sticker with plenty of power. The dual clutch transmission is very buttery when I’m moving and contributes towards the good mpg, but it’s sometimes a little jerky from a stop. To me that’s a reasonable trade off. I’ve gotten used to the start/stop feature, which I didn’t think I would, since the car is so smooth and starts up immediately, but I can turn it off with a simple push of a button if it bothers me.
I like the quietness and the way it drives - smooth and comfortable with plenty of instant power on tap, but holds the road well. This is my 5th turbo car and I’ve never had any trouble. All the storage under the cargo floor is super. My phone doesn’t work with the wireless charger because I have too thick of an otter box protecter, but I like the vertical holder as the phone is out of the way. I prefer that there is not wireless connection for Apple play because I like the navigation that comes with the car. It has all the traffic info, much easier to use interim stops, and the HUD and center display shows me when and where to turn which it wouldn’t do with Apple play. If I want Apple play I use one cord to plug in the phone. Otherwise I use the other plug to charge up my phone. BTW I’ve already received at least one over the air update to my nav. It shuts down the nav for about 20 minutes while it updates, which it can do with the car on or off.
As to the negatives. AWD cars do not come with a spare. It has that worthless can of goop. The dealer installed the cable carrier underneath and rubber cinch brackets (as part of buying the car) and I bought a third party spare and lug wrench/jack for $275. Problem fixed. The car does not have an eyeglass holder and there’s a bit much hard plastic, but it’s in mostly innocuous places. The Harmon Kardon stereo is just ok. It should be better for a premium stereo.
I like all the controls on the steering wheel and the button controls on the stack. Many cars are putting too many controls on the computer screen so you have a choice of driving or messing with the computer. You might as well be texting. I like the electronic gear shifter. Some people prefer the old gear shift handle, but it takes up a lot of useful real estate and obviates the storage space underneath.
There are many other features I like such as the hands free hatch opener, the blue link start, pre air condition and fuel monitoring, the heated and ventilated seats, the heated steering wheel, etc, etc. I like the car better than my wife’s X5 which is 5” longer and 2” wider. Her back seat is much tighter and harder to get into and the turning radius is much larger. I have pretty much all the features she has, but at half the cost, 1/4th the maintenance and repair costs, much less depreciation, better reliability, and a much better warranty.
A few last notes - the 2021 through 2023 Santa Fe’s are virtually identical so you can get any one of those years and you get the same car. I much prefer my 2023 Santa Fe over the 2024. I don’t like style of the 2024, the lack of buttons, the bigger size, the third row and the bigger price tag, but it has the exact same drivetrain. It’s getting harder to find a mid size two row SUV. You either get a smaller SUV like a RAV4 or Tucson or you get a larger three row SUV.
