Legendary Toyota Tundra still running as strong as the day it rolled out the factory. 5.7 liter is a beast!

Much better than the rest

I bought my 2008 tundra in 2023. I needed a new car as my 2015 jeep Cherokee trailhawk was having some severe transmission issues and I knew it wouldn't be long before a very costly replacement. Use cars were going for insane prices in 2023 though so I took a chance on this tundra. Out the door with an inflated price of about 16k and 165k on the clock for the truck. The price was low enough though that I could make it work. I drive a lot for my job and since I bought it it's now at 206k on the odometer. In that time I had very few issues. And nothing has cost more than 400 bucks to fix. I needed breaks, I could tell they were in need of replacement on my test drive. But other than that nothing seemed off. 4x4 worked fine (well, for a Toyota they're sometimes finiky about entering and exiting the 4x4 modes) but the transfer case engaged easily enough. The power was smooth and it felt linear. I bought new rotors and pads and haven't had an issue with them since. Then, one morning my truck wouldn't start. It would crank all I could ask of it but not turn over. A little troubleshooting later and I found out my fuel pump had gone bad. I got it replaced in 1 day in my driveway. Not an issue since except my fuel gauge isn't right. This particular part failed about a year after owning it so I knew how far I could go on a tank and I just watch my miles. The issues isn't with the truck but the fuel pump float isn't sending the right info. Oh well. Now I've had a somewhat common secondary air pump failure. Luckily based off my code reader it's stuck in the closed position so no real issues there. It's a $3k fix for the emissions equipment or, luckily for me, a $15 fix with a code reader that clear the codes. The truck runs absolutely fine. All the power no issues and no changes in any way other than it throws that code. That's it. For a 17 year old vehicle it has nothing else wrong with it mechanically. It's got expected 17 year old dings and scratches but everything else works. Every time. I wanted this review to be honest. I've driven it daily for a few years now. It's got some issues but all in all, I would recommend this truck. It's hauled my camper, my in laws camper, a friend's boat, and my flatbed utility trailer loaded down before and no issues. Though none of those loads have exceeded 7000 lbs it's pulled everything like a champ. It's an sr5 trim and obviously far less technologically advanced than the 2015 jeep I had. But I find that to be endearing as there isn't much to go wrong. I had to add a Bluetooth screen for navigation and music/ podcasts/ audiobooks and while the screen isn't super reliable (often disconnects from my phone) it's made up for any shortcomings of the truck technology wise. If you find one of these 2nd gen trucks with the 5.7 and 6 speed in decent shape, I would highly recommend it. Any issues you may have are usually easily dealt with and not terribly expensive. These trucks just work. My son loves the size of my backseat (I've got a crewmax) and whole a 5 foot bed is small it holds all my tools and gear easily for work with room to spare for when I bring something back in the bed. I took a risk, and a serious one at that, as I was also looking at a Chevy 1500 with 70k on it for the same price in 2023 but I don't trust gm engines with the active fuel management. This truck hasn't been an issue yet. It rides well, it stops well, it pulls well etc. It's so far been money well spent.

I was wondering if anyone else had to change their brakes on their tundra. i am on my third set of front brakes. they are wearing out very very fast rate. every 5000 miles. I don't know whats wrong. the dealer says the truck weighs too much and its normal. and they blame the way i drive

Big Dissappointment

I got this truck because of Toyota's reputation for quality and a bit of over excitement. I should have done my homework. There are numerous areas for major improvement with this truck. The thing is just not solid. The bed and especially the tailgate is cheaply manufactured. The thing that annoys me most is that since I got the factory installed trailering package they changed the axle ratio so now I get no where near the EPA estimated miles per gallon, which is dismal anyway.
