With 671 hp and its compact size, the 2025 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E Performance promises amazing things. But the sport sedan's plug-in hybrid powertrain adds serious weight that blunts its handling and road comfort. Drivers seeking the ultimate driving sedan might consider a different German offering.Read full review

Overview
by the Edmunds Experts
Updated: 1/7/2026
The 2025 C-Class is Mercedes-Benz's small sedan. It's bracketed in Mercedes' lineup by the smaller CLA and the midsize E-Class. It's available in a variety of versions, from the mild C 300 to the wild AMG C 63, with options that allow you to take a more luxurious or sporty path. In an era when shoppers are flocking to SUVs, it's refreshing that Mercedes offers a smaller, more efficient and more agile vehicle for those who want it.
We drove the 2025 Mercedes-Benz C-Class on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Driving experience
6.5/10
How does the Mercedes-Benz C-Class drive? In our testing, the AMG C 63 S E Performance sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and needed only 104 feet to come to a stop. That's nearly identical performance to its nearest rival, the BMW M3 Competition. The transmission shifts smoothly, though it occasionally stumbled in the wrong gear with sudden throttle inputs. We liked the powertrain's responsive nature, even at low rpm.
But the C 63 S E loses some luster in the corners. Our car weighed 4,803 pounds, about 1,000 pounds heavier than the BMW M3. That kind of mass is a challenge, especially on imperfect roads. Bumpy corners easily upset and jostle the rear end, especially in Comfort mode. Switching to Sport mode stiffens the suspension and tames some movement but creates other discomforts. The numb steering also lacks feel, so finding a groove at the limits is challenging. We'd happily trade some straight-line speed for better handling.
The rear seat's semi-high deck blocks some of the rear view, but the wide glass makes it feel less encumbered. Driver aids are plentiful, though the adaptive cruise braking and acceleration can be overly strong. The 360-degree camera system proved handy for navigating tight confines.
Comfort
6.5/10
How comfortable is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class? The AMG C 63 S E offers decent space in both rows, with room enough for adults in back. The seats have great cushioning and support, along with nice heating and ventilation functions. The interior looks great, but functionally falls short. Touch-sensitive steering wheel controls make precise adjustments difficult and the door-mounted seat controls aren't that intuitive. The lack of tactile buttons makes the interior harder to use than necessary. The climate system also has issues. The auto fan control required our manual adjustments, the vents are too focused, and the rear seat lacks separate temperature or fan speed controls. More diffused air circulation would be a welcome upgrade.
Getting in and out can be difficult because of the car's low ride height, and high curbs are a threat to door dings and scrapes. Moving kids in and out can also be a chore, but Isofix anchor and tether points for car seats are easy to access. And if you're looking for a visceral soundtrack, keep looking. Road noise is intrusive, even on what seems like smooth pavement, and the car sounds like a mix of four-cylinder engine and electronic synthesizer. It pales compared to the old V8's inspiring roar.
In-cabin tech
9.7/10
How’s the tech? The infotainment system is packed with features and easy to use, even with a deep menu system. Mercedes' navigation system is the only built-in nav system that compares with the performance of modern smartphone apps. It's a boon for the directionally challenged since the clarity of commands is virtually unrivaled. But if you still prefer your phone, wired or wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes standard, and both integrations look great on the Benz's large touchscreen. To top it off, you have Mercedes-Benz's advanced voice recognition system and excellent audio systems.
Storage & cargo
7/10
How’s storage and cargo? The AMG C 63 S E's trunk space is adequate, but the hybrid battery pack compromises some space. A noticeable hump behind the rear seats shortens the height of the pass-through and reduces volume to 11.6 cubic feet. On the upside, the remote seat-folding buttons make opening the space between the trunk and rear seats quick and easy. The trunk also features a convenient auto open-and-close function, and the shrouded trunk hinges won't crush your grocery bags.
Cabin storage includes an adequate center armrest with split-opening doors, removable tandem cupholders, and average-size door pockets. Storage is functional but not exceptionally clever beyond the cupholders.
Value
7.1/10
Is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good value? Like the other C-Class variants, the AMG C 63 S E Performance exudes Mercedes' typical high-end luxury feel. But it's hard to make a case for the Benz when the BMW M3 is a more well-rounded competitor. The BMW makes less power, but it also weighs less, making it the superior track vehicle. If you're open to a full EV, the Tesla Model 3 Performance offers unparalleled value, outshining both Germans with bang-for-your-buck. Aside from sheer straight-line speed and its cutting-edge powertrain, this AMG is far from the best buy here.
Mercedes has a four-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain warranty. Both are average for the class. It also includes roadside assistance for four years/50,000 miles. Unlike rivals, there's no included maintenance.
Electric range/MPG
1.9/10
How’s the fuel economy? We drove the AMG C 63 S E Performance on our standardized real-world evaluation route. We traveled 8.6 miles on city streets using pure electricity, then averaged 26 mpg for the remaining portion of the drive, which includes a lot of highway travel.
Our results far exceed the official EPA estimates of 3 miles of electric range and 21 mpg combined and go to show that if you exercise restraint, the 671-hp AMG can be more frugal with fuel than you'd expect. Eight miles of range isn't going to cover most people's commutes, but it'll reduce the sting of fill-ups if you're judicious about plugging in.
X factor
7/10
The AMG C 63 S E Performance strikes a beautiful balance of looking the business but not overdoing the design. (We're looking at you, BMW.) Enthusiasts will lament the absence of the previous generation's soul-stirring V8 engines, and sadly this high-tech plug-in hybrid replacement doesn't deliver the same aural experience. On top of that, its extra weight puts a damper on the overall driving experience. A good effort, but one that lacks the personality that made the previous C 63s so good.

The AMG C 63 S E Performance comes well stocked with features. Among the car's options, we'd recommend getting the Driver Assistance package because its extra driver aids can be pretty helpful in congested traffic.
Competitors to consider
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class squares off against its traditional foes that include the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. As you move up the C-Class lineup, the AMG C 43 is equivalent to the Audi S4 and BMW M340i, while the top AMG C 63 challenges the Audi RS 5 and BMW M3. In general, the C-Class is the more luxurious pick, while the BMW is the sportier choice. In many ways, the Audi finds a middle ground, but its age is beginning to show after eight years without a redesign. You can read our test team's Expert Rating below to learn more.
Edmunds spotlight: The replacement for displacement
In generations past, we knew that a vehicle had a burly V8 under the hood when we'd see the letters AMG followed by the number 63. But no longer. The latest AMG C 63 has a four-cylinder that seems to have been pushed to its limits. It makes significantly more power thanks to a plug-in hybrid system, yet it's more efficient and can provide 6 miles of EV range. Sounds good, right? Well, actually, it's the new engine's sound that holds it back. The wail of four cylinders simply doesn't have the impact and ceremony of a V8.

2025 Mercedes-Benz C-Class AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE 4dr Sedan AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 9A)
I have been a high performance car enthusiast for three decades. I will be as concise and straight to the point as I can in this review. As a current 2019 AMG c63s coupe and 2023 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera S owner, I decided to put my biases aside and decided to custom order a 2025 AMG c63s E performance. To my great surprise, after driving this car for 2K plus miles, I am quite … surprised by this car's performance, luxury and comfort. It clearly outperforms my other cars. Do I miss the "muscle car" roar of my older 2019 c63s and snappy movements of my 911?...of course!...but considering all factors I pick my new c63s E performance for my everyday driving enjoyment. Welcome to the future of high performance automobiles!
