This is my first Subaru ive ever owned. Ive been a Mazda fan for years due to its "zoom-zoom" factor, I test drove the Impreza and walked away ecstatic. I bought the 5speed manual over the CVT because I love to shift gears. The CVT gets better gas mileage. The AWD system gives you grip right off the line, no waiting for power to build. I rarely feel the need to redline just to merge onto the highway, just a blip of the throttle, downshift and your off. This isn't a WRX and shouldn't be treated as such. The interior is pretty simple but very nice materials. Its very spacious and four 6ft adults fit nicely in my sedan.

I traded in my VW Jetta sedan a month ago for the Impreza hatchback. As the salesperson informed me during the "I'm still looking" phase, people buy Subarus for the "waist down" performance, as they lack many of the luxuries that other car makers add as perks. Having said that, the leather is good quality, the car handles very well (can't wait to get it in the snow!), and it's got a decent backseat and storage for the daily haul. Bluetooth and USB are decent, but stereo very generic. Controls are simple. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is interesting...takes some getting used to. One month in, and I'm a happy customer!

I purchased this car brand new....Drive about 20k a year. Mostly to work (90%) flat boring 65mph commute.. The BAD...The bluetooth is terrible sounds like you're in a wind tunnel always.. The car eats about a quart of oil every 5K. Subaru says thats normal. PZEV? The wheel bearing needs replacement already. The biggest problem is the terrible CVT.....Its heading to the dealership Monday. Even when the transmission is good its still a terrible item. Subaru had extended the warranty to 100k or 10 years...thank you Subaru:) Maybe to avoid a class action lawsuit perhaps? These transmissions tend to fail a lot! THE GOOD - Great on gas, especially on the highway. 35mpg at 65mph..... The AWD is AMAZING in snow. Hands down the safest car in snow by a mile. Leather interior is nice, visibility, controls are all great..you can pack a ton inside the hatchback at least. DO NOT GET THE CVT......

Overall the car is fine. The interior is okay and it handles well on flat roads and downhill in the mountains. It's light and fun to drive in these conditions and feels very stable. Downside: It's more underpowered than I expected--even hilly neighborhoods have the engine revving high and loud. AC seems to increase the problem. The nav system is not intuitive--my cell phone app is more user friendly. Speakers are tinny and HD radio is not useful because it keeps fading out--unsure if the problem is the car or HD radio in general. Biggest problem is MPG--have yet to break 25 MPG with 60+% highway driving. Trip computer seems to overestimate actual by about 1.4 MPG. Updat after 42 months, 36 k mikes: MPG still way under epa estimates. I average about 19 city and 27 if pure highway driving (as in a road trip from LA to San Francisco. This is exactly what I get in my 1999 Acura TL which is a much older, heavier, and more powerful car. In fact my Impreza matches the EPA estimated MPH fur my Acura. At around 36 k miles, we noticed oil leaking from the cylinder head. 5.5 year update: just sold it to dealer for just over half the original purchase price. Not bad. Never did much better on mpg. Averaged about 23 with an even mix of hwy and city driving. (The new car gets the mpg I expect from it.) But the car did grow on me over the years. Paint seems to be a weak point.

Lots of noise

I have a 2012 @ have put 20,000 miles on it. This one has the deluxe stereo & $300 speaker option, which is good because sometimes you can actually hear some music above the engine/transmission noise when you're starting off & the awful tire noise all the time. Subaru apparently has no knowledge of sound proofing. They ruined the car for me by choosing these noisy low rated tires. Maybe I'll like this car once these tires are replaced with something better.
