Ion-1
Bought this car new in May 2005 and had one problem with the transmission but haven't had any other problems since. I'm up to 47,000 miles now. A decent car overall. I average 32mpg driving conservatively and about 27mpg with no regard to fuel efficiency driving. The car has some zip if you need it. Nice thing about the plastic panels is that the car looks the same as I bought it new and I rarely go to the car wash. And replacing the panels is cheap if I have to.
Raving about ION
My third Saturn, it has the same great reliability, and low cost of operation, but the '05 is vastly improved. Use of QuietSteel and powertrain mods makes the ride luxury-car quiet. Electronic throttle control (new for '05) provides excelent throttle response at any speed. Once one turns the ignition key the cranking sequence continues automatically until engine starts. How many economy cars have this feature? New for '05 suspension is much improved, small bumps dissapeared from roads the day I started driving it (Jan. 8, 2005). Very precise newly recalibrated steering, with excellent feel compared to the 2003 ION 3 I traded in. Distinct sense of refinement is felt right away, with great newly redesigned seats for '05. It has etter braking and grip performance than Accord V6, quieter than Mazda 3, 34 mpg in mixed freeway/city traffic.
Will buy again !
I haven't had any problems with this car since I bought it new. I get 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the freeway at 75 to 80 mph. Its real easy to change the oil and filter. In the winter this car really handles the snow, up to 10 inches no problem. Has lots of power for a small car, stomp on it from a dead start and it will break the tires loose.
2005 ION
Should Saturn/GM ever decide to advertise these cars, they'll be exposing the best kept secret in the car industry. This is a great car for a very reasonable price, about $12.5K after incentives w/ air, auto, CD player and floor mats. Rides and feels like a mid size car without all the bulk. The center instrument panel took no time to adapt to on the test drive, and has never been a problem since. This one belongs on your list. Test drive one and find out for yourself before letting your friends or reviewers decide for you. The only way to fairly evaluate one is to get behind the wheel of one.
You get what ya paid for
I purchased this car with 50K for $7K. I really got my money's worth which wasn't much. The right headlight refuses to work, it runs hard, the engine can't take going 70 mph, and the whole car seems to be made of cheap, cheap plastic. To top it off, my engine light turns on then after a few hours to a day it turns off by itself. And no one can figure out why it does that! Buy this car if you want a cheap compact gas saver.
