1998 Olds Aurora

David Kehne, 12/18/2008

This is a great car to have for just plain comfort and getting groups of five adults around. The style still turns heads even if it looks a bit overgrown by today's standards. The Northstar-inspired engine still burns rubber and the rear seat, not that I've travelled while there, is one of the most comfortable ever put in a sedan. This car is a great one to have in addition (or instead) of an SUV. The trunk is large but the size of its opening does present some limits.

The Best

I have had my Aurora for seven years, almost twice as long as any other vehicle! It has absolutely been the best car I have ever owned, except for the depreciation. I love this car. The one problem that I had with it (fixed while under warranty) was the alternator went. Since then all it has needed is tires, oil changes, and gas! What else can one ask for in a car?

Sleek and Luxury In One

Definitely a luxury vehicle. Moving from one state to another,...requested a simple oil change (high quality products)from a quick lube shop that allowed a trainee to perform the oil change (without oversight), etc... overtightening then causing engine to leak and eventually fail (cost me $6,500 to fix).

After 10+ years of driving BMWs this car was a surprise. I didn't like driving it. The wife liked it, so we bought it. Six years later, I love it. It is rock solid, low maintenance, gets good gas mileage and is great to commute in.

Head bolts 98 aurora

I love my 98 aurora. I have 225,000 miles and still looking good. I did blow a head gasket from broken water pump. When I replaced the gaskets I ran into a problem when the head bolts were stripped out. Do not buy the heli coils they will not work and you will waste a lot of money. the only kit I found to work is the Time Sert Big Serts. The cost is high but the kit is complete and now that the job is done my favorite car is back on the road running like a champ.

This car has been a pleasure to drive and i highly recommend it. The engineering is great. The engine seized up at 101,000 miles on it so we brought to a guy and he put a surplus motor in it with 60,000 miles on it and now the car runs strong as an ox. The repair cost was 4,000 but the guy guarantees the motor for another 100k miles and we have no doubt it will last longer.

Underrated car/excellent used bargain...

Used-car sleeper. Very distinctive (few on the road; bargain on the used market due to death of Olds). Similar to $50k Caddy STS; mine stickered over $40k, but I got it used w/27k miles for $17k). Styling? love it or hate it (I LOVE it). Base is loaded, few options. Mechanically, hit-or-miss (GM build quality issues). Mine, other than water pump, has been mechanically solid (was for the 1st owner - check maintenance history!). Lots of technology - a third-party extended warranty is recommended.

I have had to problems with this car that I felt Olds should of addressed with at least some assistance. Air conditions unit went out at 70000 miles dealer wanted $1200.00, A repair shop down the street charged me $595.00 The radiator is of poor design allowing road debre to collect in the fins. Almost impossible unit to clean of flush. Will have to replaced in 2003

Perhaps the best-priced, luxury sedan on the market today. Excellent balance between comfort, power. Suprisingly good fuel economy. Egonomically, nearly perfect. Excellent reliability during its first 100K of life. Would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Fun to drive, Affordable to the masses now after starting with a price tag of $38K in 98. Controls are ready for use with the "cockpit" styled interior. Starting to see more mechanical stuff go wrong now at 75K mi. Brakes, calipers, alternator, air conditioning, steering noise at low speed turns, Tried riding in the back seat for 1st time... why is the ceiling so low? So many of them on the road now, it's hard to feel original...

Best car I have ever had. Built like a tank, expect to put another 100K on it. Air conditioning compressor (built by third party) went out at 80K, rear suspension sensor out at 90K - small potatoes given the hi tech build of the car. Not a single rattle in the car after 105K. The car will always look marvelous.

We did not go to the dealer with an Auora in mind. I had always thought of it as a grandma car. We are happy that we bought it and there isn't a thing that we don't like about it! We will be sad when we have to sell. (too many kids! We no longer fit!)

'98 Aurora is a great car!

Since purchasing my '98 Aurora new in '99, I have had virtually no problems until last week. My speedometer started a jerking action from 35 to 55 MPH and the transmission was trying to adjust to the speed it was showing, which caused some surging. I took it immediately to a GM Dealer who advised me two hours later that it would cost $2200 in parts and labor to fix. The electronics problem was going to require them to pull and replace several parts. This makes absolutely no sense to me! The car only has 39,000 miles on it, has never been wrecked or mishandled and always serviced. Other than that, I love my car!

The car is over six years old, has 92,000 mi. and it still performs like it did when I got it in 2000. Great for city or highway driving; 18+ mpg in town and 23+ mpg on long trips. Rising gas prices have generated thoughts of switching to something else but I don't think I could stand the shock. Had to replace the directional switch, apparently not totally uncommon, for an uncommon price of $550.00.

I was checking for a caddy when the Aurora jumped at me from the dealership floor. This one was Marine green (that's me,) with two-tone tan and burl interior and loaded. The V-8 performed like a rocket ship and the car cornered like a racecar. I was 24 years old again! The car is subtle in its appearance but when the young kids pull up beside this grandpa at a light and start revving, I show them what a jackrabbit start is really all about. Gotta go. Its time for my geritol.

This is the best car I have ever owned. The battery went sixteen years before replacing it. I thought my Toronado was good, but Baby beats it. I have always met the checkups required and have the secret to a great running car, I a!ways use high octane fuel. The Mechanics call her a Powder Puff car and had people track me down in stores wanting to know if I would consider selling. She has 86,000 miles and a purring engine. Thanks to the factory where she was assembled and the great North star engine.

Best domestic car of its year

I love this car. It looks great, handles nicely, is eminently comfortable and some of the features are very thoughful (like a passenger mirror that rotates down to look at the curb when placed in reverse - for parallel parking). My AC compressor failed, but other than that, no mechanical issues. GM killed the wrong make. I have a Buick too - the Olds is dramatically better.

Only thing i dont is when its raining you cannot even have your window partially open with out alot of water getting in particularly on the driver side due to the wipers, this issues is largely in part to the aerodynamic design, however some rain guards would be nice, and when opening the trunk in the rain, the water isnt always caught by the "gutter" Other than that, i love it.

We just picked it up used with 36,000 miles on it. All the creature comforts of a Caddy or Lincoln but doesn't look like a "grandma" car. Powerful, smooth riding and handles like a sports car. Oldsmobile screwed up when they changed the body style in 2001.

Bought this car off of EBay after research many 4 door sedans. My wife said I had to get a 4 door, so I decided to get a fun one, and this car has been great. While not quite a BMW, it certainly is price MUCH less than other sports sedans. Too bad GM did have the good marketing to keep Olds around. On the highway I have not had a better car and it is effortless to drive while stuck in traffic.

Since I purchased my car, it has been excellent. My only copmplaint is that it is a little cramped for such a large, long car-- not much leg or head room for someone over 6 feet tall. I'm 6'2", and I drive with the seat all the way back (and tilted all the way back), and the backrest tilted back at about 35 degrees. My (short) hair still brushes the roof. Because of that, my next car will probably be a Cadillac STS. But if you're altitudinally challenged, this is one great, smooth, good-looking and reliable car.

I couldn't be happier with my pearl white Aurora. I bought it 2 years old with only 5,000 miles on it. It was like brand new! It runs like a top and I have never had any mechanical problems with it. I did have a problem with the horn not honking, which turned out to be pinched wires under the airbag in the steering wheel. A bit costly (~$250) to fix, but worth it. It is fun to drive if you like speed and power. It feels like you are going slower than reality, so be careful not to get a ticket! :-)

I read about this car's development and wanted one for years, so this year I bought one used and absolutely love it. Great styling turns heads and brings compliments. Roomy and very comfortable. Lots of intelligent touches, but the engine is the real jewel. Never had such a free revving and powerful engine before (based on the Cadillac Northstar. Great chassis, very solid, drives like a much more expensive European sport sedan, without the high foreign parts costs for repair. Service is available at the local Chevy or Olds dealership at reasonable rates. Insurance is reasonable too.

This is the best car I ever owned, easy to drive, great performance on the highway and supremely comfortable. The design inside is made for the driver although the front passenger has their own temperature control. Comfortable leather seats - and the heated seats are perfect for Canadian winters. I checked out a Chev Impala at the same dealer - no contest!

I bought my '98 used for ten grand. I always thought these cars looked a bit "duddy"...like a shoe. But when I opened the door at the dealership and saw the interior, I melted. It was like a jet cockpit. Unbelievably plush and comfortable. 'Screw what it looks like on the outside', I thought. This car was just getting comfortable at 90 mph...unbelievably quiet and smooth. I pushed it to 110 but the governor kicked in (for a second I thought I'd blown the engine!). Then the trouble began....one thing after another....starter ($1200), fuel injectors ($800), cat converter, etc., etc. By the time I got rid of it (tranny let go at 130k miles), I'd spent over $9000 in repairs.
