My Yellow Banana
I love my Xterra! There is plenty of room for me in the front and passengers like the stadium seating in the back. The rear seats are versatile! But they rattle when you drive. My airbags didn't work in an accident. My seatbelt worked and left a red mark on my neck and chest. I have had a recurring problem with the seatbelt light coming on. I have tried to repair it several times. The roof rack would smack against the roof and was really annoying, after the rubber tabs blew off. Of course, the gas mileage is not the best with any SUV, but, since the gas prices have gone up, I feel like I spend most of my time at the pump.
Love My SUV!
I researched (edmunds.com) this vehicle prior to buying it. I tried several others SUV's because I was afraid of getting a premire SUV. I work as a massage therapist and I travel to my clients. Having a vehicle that accommodates my table. I literally took my table with me in trying out each one. The Xterra, besides accommading my table, has carried many loads of camping gear, groceries, shopping sprees, and so much more.

This is a fun vehicle
I purchased this vehicle with 70,000 miles on it and I have taken it all over the great outdoors and it is more fun than any other vehicle I have ever owned.
Not enough power
Good truck if you don't want to use it to tow anything. The design is nice and it is very capable in 4WD. At 140 horses, it just doesn't have enough power. The gas mileage (18-15MPG) should be better. No problems mechanically. Looks nice and design features (cargo netting, rear power point, roof rack, etc.) are useful if you are an out-doors type.
good quality bad gas milage
the car has been reliable. Everything works. No troubles for years. But it's kind of noisy, and sluggish. The gas milage is really poor.
It's my fault I'm not impressed
This truck provides an excellent view of the road. I have the four cylinder (my fault) and the rear wheel drive (also my fault) I disgusted myself when I discovered that for 20.00 more a month, I could have had the V6, 4wd, power everything truck of my dreams. Don't skimp, or don't buy. Believe me, power door locks, 4WD and extra power would be worth another 100.00 a month.
Still going strong at 115k
This SUV's great. Not anything like JD Power's review. Practical, fun, low maintenance. Just do the maintenance and everything works fine. Still a very tight sounding vehicle 5 years and 100k+ miles later. Not too many vehicles can pull that off.
Great at 88K
I've driven lots of cars (field salesperson) and have to say at 3+ years, I still REALLY LIKE this car. Very dependable, solid gas mileage for an SUV, and fun. Towing - I pull two jetski's with no prob. It's a no frills, solid, cost efficient vehicle in a cool looking package. I strongly recommend buying one.
Xterra
i purchased this vehicle certified pre owned with 22k miles. right from the start it was my favorite suv, i have driven hundreds of different vehicles (sales and service) and hae not found anything like it. this is a true SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE. a lot complain about the ride and few features, new SUV's are more like Luxury Utility Vehicles. this vehicle is everything that nissan sells it as. from the medi kit in the trunk to the standard roof rack and SPORT amenities. this tough RELIABLE vehicle is a true SPORT Utility Vehicle
GREAT SUV but, glad I got the 5spd!
I love this SUV! The look is GREAT and seeing other XTerra owners around town makes you feel part of click! We live in CO and go to the mtns frequently. The 4X4 capability is great over rocks and thru creek beds. Long distance travel is nice but a little cramped! My complaint, as is most peoples, NO POWER!! I was wise and found a 5spd and love it. It's great on the hwy going up the mtns. Maybe in a couple yrs I'll buy the supercharged version! I would recommend it to anyone!!
beats the hell out of my pathfinder
This truck is FUN! I've had it for about 3 weeks and I love it.
Almost 5 Years and Still Running
July 2004 will be my 5-year anniversary of owning my 2000 Xterra XE 4WD V6. I am on my 3rd set of front brakes and original rear brakes. I replaced the stock BF Goodrich Long Trails at about 65,000 miles with Goodyear Forteras. I replaced the battery around the same time and have just recently noticed the upper radiator hose has been leaking coolant under pressure. The body still looks good although the plastic has faded over the years. The interior still looks great. I'm averaging around 14- 15 MPG. Overall Im very pleased but would not buy another Xterra just because I dont use or need its off road capability.
XTERRA
I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT EXCEPT THE GAS MILEAGE WHICH IS 14-15 IN SUMMER USING A/C. GETS ABOUT 20-21 ON THE ROAD W/ AIR CONDITIONING ON. NOT GOOD FOR SMALL WOMEN OR WOMEN W/SHORT LEGS.
Great SUV
Everything you need, nothing you don't. Perfect car for fun or solid for the whole family, with safety rating and child lock seats. Perfect for the young Dad or an outdoorsman.
out and about where you can't find me!!
I am or better yet "WAS" a die hard 4- runner fan. Now after the luxury craze took over our beloved suv's I had to look else where to replace my 1993 4- runner with the same ruggedness that an suv should have. The Xterra fit the mold perfectly. The Xterra has been everything my older 4-runner was and more.
2nd Nissan, still in love
live in Kalamazoo, MI; purchased from MA. It's been as far as (MA,) NV and FL; of course never a problem. Actually, when I bought Nissan Sentra in 1990; I'm now on my FOURTEENTH YEAR without any repairs thanks to Nissan. Enjoyable to drive, backseat riders like the comfort. Durable interior, running boards (pipes) that absorbed being T-boned, starts every winter, fast HOT heating system, decent gas mileage for SUV- just a great truck. I have stick-shift & 4WD; winter driving no problem. Tows like it's not towing.
Former Jeep Guy
When i got tired of my loud, hard to deal with jeep wrangler I was looking at the grand cherokees but fell in love with the style of the nissan Xterra! I love my 2000 Xterra. Get one equipped with V6 and 4WD. Also be sure to get the power package, I noticed some have the manual roll up windows (like my wrangler did) I do not miss my wrangler like I thought I would. I love my Nissan Xterra (solar yellow with over sized tires and greay leather seats make it my dream vehicle!) Test drove a 2000 jeep grand cherokee which cost $4,500 more than the Xterra and had basic cloth seating. Very happy with my purchase so far!
I love my Exterra
I have had my Xterra for only a few years and have hit over 100,000 miles (yea I drive alot). It has given me relativly little problems but the normal wear and tear fixes ( brakes, batteries and tires). I have taken long road trips and the gas milage, tho not ideal is not as bad as I would have thought. I can drive from LA to SJ on 1 tank of gas.
Great Truck
I'm had the xterra for 5 years, 93K miles. So far so good. Nothing has ever broken down, and it still runs like new. I cant ask for anything more. Go anywhere capability, good wear on the brakes. Brakes are awsome. Changed the oil every 2500 miles, using castro syntec 5w50. I cant say enough about the build quality. A little bouncy on the but upgraded the suspension with a tokico kit and it rides well. GREAT CAR111
Xterra-Xtreme
I have taken my Xterra from where the waves crash on the shore to the top of snowy mountains. I have yet to get stuck and I have had no maintenance issues. It tows it hauls and is nice to just ride in. My favorite places is to take it out on the beach at the Outer Banks of NC and to the drive, drop down the back seats, lay out some blankets and enjoy a good show.
Best SUV for the Money!
I have owned my Nissan Xterra for three years now and have loved every minute of it! I have owned two Toyotas before and probably will not go back anytime soon.
extera tough
Hello yes it has been a most reliable car . The ride could be better but 4 wheel drive are stiff rides I have been very pleased with it thus far. I would buy another. I am a mechanic and have done nothing but routine maintanice. It is a very stylish ride from the outside. Over all a nice car
KW's
I really have enjoyed the car these past 5 years, but it can be a little noisy on the highway. If it could be soundproofed some more it would be great
Great Car
I found this vehicle very fun to drive and quite capable both on road and off road. I used the car for everything from road trips, to LA commuting, to Rocky Mountain offroading and it did great. The gas mileage left a bit to be desired, but to be fair, mine was lifted with oversized tires. I was recently in a 20+ car pile up that unfortunately totaled my Nissan, but let me tell you, that car crashed incredibly well. My girlfriend and i were both able to walk away from the accident uninjured. The car took several high speed impacts from other vehicles and even a few walls quite softly. We both believe its safety features saved us. It really was an great car both in driving and in crashing...
Xterra Owner
I love my Xterra. It has 100,000 miles and I have only had to change the tires, brakes and a couple belts. Nothing huge considering the mileage.
Just OK...
Good buy for what you get. When they mean "no frills," this is exactly what you get. No luxury appointments, but I wasn't going for that. Needed something to haul two large dogs, but didn't cost a bunch. I won't buy another one of these, as the ride feels as if you are on a buckboard wagon - could have had a better suspension installed.
What a great little SUV.
My wife and I purchased this Xterra almost 7 years ago (when we had no kids) and it was worth the price. We finally paid it off and it has been a very reliable vehicle. It is very comfortable on long and short trips with the family. A family of 4 will fit comfortably. As I am now finding out, 3 in the back seat is a little too snug. Other than that I think 7 years ago we made a good decision that we still own today with over 81,000 miles on it. Other than one recall from the dealership, we have had no problems at all. In the future we probably would be better off with 3rd row seating. Other than that I would keep it.
Simple but great
You get exactly what you pay for with the Xterra. It's hardy, functional, cool looking and reliable. Servicing really started at 125,000 kms at which time most bits started to come apart. Keyless entry, shocks, clutch, muffler, power windows, a/c all needed either partial or full replacement. I did miss some of the luxuries of upscale models. Overall a great buy.
Real SUV for Real Men
I was caught in the Christmas 2002 blizzard on the NY Thruway. Drove 90 miles between Albany and Utica in 4WD and passed hundreds of stuck cars. A lot of them were those Honda CRV type of fake 4WD SUVs. My Xterra got me there without a problem. I even plowed my mother's driveway using my front bumper!
2000 Nissan Xterra
Have owned an Xterra since October 2000. Has approx. 80000 miles and no major problems so far. It is a fun vehicle to drive. Has been great in the Iowa winters and provides a comfortable, secure ride. It has all of the creature comfort features you need without over doing it. Although there are features I would like to see incorporated in the vehicle, overall I have been very satisfied with it's performance, dependability and looks.
Bad paint job and rattles
The Xterra is perfect for our one-baby, two-dog, surf-board, and kayak carrying lifestyle. Even towed out a stuck Cherokee once. (4WD, no less!) The paint job (white) was really bad. Warranty work was done to repair serious rust below the radiator. Also look for rust spots wherever there is s spot weld. Also, there is a mysterious rattle on the front passenger side that the dealer was unable to fix. Overall, we like the vehicle, however, I recommend hunkering down and taking a close look under the grill at the paint below the radiator and in other hidden areas for signs of rust.
real suv
I purchased this vehicle with 50k on it. It has been the most fun to drive vehicle I've ever owned. It has a much better feel off road and on than my previous explorer. It still feels tighter than my explorer did when it was new.
Going on 4 years...
I bought the 2000 XE V6 4WD and I am impressed with the reliablity and ride after +60K miles. Sure, Gas Mileage could be better, but what are you going to do. My X has capably handled several snowy winters in the last few years and annual trips out on the beach in North Carolina. It has "passable" comfort for long trips, but it certainly isn't a Benz...Then again, there are no SLK's pulling up to the surf on the beach! I've had a couple of little rattles and squeeks, but overall, I am pretty impressed.
What SUVs were meant to be
The Xterra has been an excellent truck. I expected a reliable, well-built vehicle, and that's what I got. It is great both on and off road; especially great in the snow. Needs a little more top end on the manual transmission, but great low-end power. I highly recommend this truck for anyone looking for a reasonably priced, well- performing SUV.

X-terra
Smooth ride. Sun-roof a little noisy
2000 Xterra Still Going Strong
I have owned my Nissan Xterra since I bought it new in 2000. I have not had any problems at all mechanically. I have the oil changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. The only thing that has been replaced a couple of times has been the battery. Other than that it has been a great vehicle. I am even thinking about buying a 2008 or 2009 when I'm ready to buy another vehicle. I've been totally happy with my Xterra the past 8 years. I have read that some people have had problems with rust forming on the exterior. I noticed some rust that appeared to form in the paint but with occasional waxing it inhibited any corrosion. Overall the best vehicle I've owned.
best in class
This car is not a sports car or fun around town grocery getter. This car is tough and "all business". I've yet to get it stuck and believe me I've tried. Acceleration on the road from a dead stop is my only complaint. It's perfect for the outdoor adventure guy and light work around the house. I've halled all material to build my fence in the back, all my bikes for triathlon and mountain biking, and it carries all the camping gear you need for a month! Go for it.
203,000 miles 3.3 xterra automatic 2wd
2000-2004 . The roof has a 12,000 lb per square inch crush rating no other SUV has that rating.

215,000 miles
The Xterra has had 215,000 miles put on it, bought it in 1999 for the 2000 model year. it started life in Minnestota, and had no rust problems! when we went to Alabama it pulled the boat to the river and back easily then we moved here 215,000 miles later through two car accidents it runs and drives like its brand new!

great! i love it so much!
love this car
and i have to say i believe you are supposed to have your airbags serviced every so often so people who's airbags didn't go off could have done that. probly a good thing to do for all late model vehicles
You get what you pay for
Should have known when I bought the cheapest sport ute that it wouldn't last long. It was great for the first year and a half, but now all the plastic bits & bobs are starting to break: the plastic rivets that hold the cloth to the back of the seat, the plastic panel on the hatch back, the arm rest/cd holder. Oh well, I bought it to take camping and its never let me down on our adventures in the wild.
good price needs comfort
Rides like a truck, seats are uncomfortable. Poor fuel milage for such a weak engine. "ABS" & "BRAKE" light come on occasionally. Dealer insists that there is nothing they can do unless light is "on" when they check it. Try getting that light to come on during scheduled maintenence. Rugged good looks on the outside but lacks ride comfort inside and out.
X Terror
This vehicle looks great BUT the 2000 model is severely lacking in interior design. I have had my XTerra in the local shop close to 30 times in the past year. It took about 7 visits just for them to do an alignment, 4 visits to replace the intake manifold, 3 visits to replace the window seals on both of the front windows. So on and so forth.
dont buy one
I would not recommend buying a nissan xterra. The plastic bumper turns white, the buttons on the radio come loose, the paint on the buttons to the radio lasted 2 years, shift gear broken, driver seat uncomfortable, entire car not quality made. I can't wait to trade in to buy a toyota. This is my first nissan, I miss my toyota.
