My 2500 mile report
Quality of workmanship seems on par with expected from MBZ, though I did have some initial reservations from 2004 and 2005 owner reviews. This SUV is very comfortable, handles and has the power of a sports car, and averages over 25MPG so far! I opted for the AMG pkg, P02, HID's, NAV, wood steering wheel and hitch (for bike rack). My wife has an E320CDI, and we love them both! I have owned many Mercedes,Porsches and Jags, but this ML is my favorite. It's really a pleasure to drive. Hey, maybe it doesn't park itself, but a man likes to do some things himself anyway! If Mercedes has a nemises, it would be electronics. The Command System is complicated, and takes some time and study to master.
Love the ML, hate the expenses
Great car, not much to whine about. Exterior still looks great with regular care & good wax. However, at 3.5 yrs (no abusive driving) 78,000 miles transmission had to be replaced (no repair options) @ over $7,500. Changing headlight bulb $150 vs. $50 for local mechanic. Basic oil changes @ dealer $150+ on A maint, usually $500+ on B maint. Like a inkjet printer, it appears most of the profits come after the sale. Saved $$$$ with local tire store vs. dealer, oil changes also at the Jiffy Lube (just more than usual for Mobil 1).

A pretty good vehicle
Recently purchased a new CDI ML. Interior is great, as qulaity workmanship stands out. Diesel is quiet, capable, and seems initially reliable. The outside could look a little more modern, but I enjoy it looks (we were comparing the new Acura MDX and ML). Ride is supple and sure-footed, with the all-wheel-drive. My only bark about the vehicle is the navigation. I was spoiled with the Acura's, as you say "Find the nearest..." and it's spot-on. With the Merc, not so. I couldn't find many local places like Wal-Mart, which was seriously disappointing in a $50K vehicle. This is seriously something Mercedes needs to improve. Also, if you opt for NAV, include voice-activation. Overall, a great car.
165,000 Mile Report
We bought this ML320 CDI used 7 years ago, and it has proven to be one of the better cars we've ever owned, especially over 80,000 miles of ownership. Fuel economy and range I calculate manually by always filling the tank and recording the miles. I've used fueleconomy.gov to track my mileage which averages 26.2MPG, with as much as 29, when I'm not driving 80MPH. We've used this vehicle to make multiple highway trips to and from MN from AZ and CA annually. An excellent highway cruiser, we've been 700+ miles between stops. The torque, power, drivability and fuel economy of this powertrain is amazing. I do much of my own servicing, including the oil cooler seal repair as well as regular transmission services too! Much of the engine oil leakage issues on these earlier OM642s comes from the intake seal on the turbo. Properly cared for, which isn't much, they don't leak. We did upgrade the suspension to bilstien B6s which stiffened the ride a bit, but has proven to be a huge improvement in handling over the OEM shocks and struts. The interior is nearly indestructible, no glitchy button or nob fails, seats still look new and clean up nicely after even the most abusive use. Fit and finish have remained tight, no funky rattles or squeaks as it has aged. The seats are amazingly comfortable over extreme distances as well, and the HVAC keeps the cabin very comfortable at any outside temperature. The 4-Matic has been flawless, and the mechanical reliability the same, proper servicing helps make that happen! My only disappointment comes from the way the MLs consume tires. I run Continental CrossContact LX20s that are lucky to go 30k miles. Rotation is a must or 30k number would be greatly reduced. They always wear nicely, but quickly in my opinion. According to my favorite shop, this is an ML issue across the line. I'd buy the 2007 ML320 CDI again without a second thought! Upgrade coming soon, 2016 GL350 BlueTec!

Wonderful Ride
Before Mercedes ever built their first first M-Class I have been sending an annual E-Mail to Damiler-Benz's New Jersery headquarters about having a diesel M-Class. It took several years to finally get my ML 320 CDI. The new M-Class is wonderful. A extremely smooth ride as compared to my old 2003 ML500 that I have had since September 2002. The interior is well thought out with some of the easiest folding rear seats which make a flat cargo area with out any gaps. My wife loves the power tailgate, especiallly in a heavy rain. Currently I'm getting about 18MPG in city driving and around 27MPG on the freeway into town from the suburbs. Haven't had it on the open road yet.
Some good some bad
Purchased the vehicle in June and just took delivery the middle of October. First one for the dealer. It is one of the most stable driving vehicles I have ever driven. No wind noise, no sway or instability. Steering is on the loose side, but comfortable. Very quiet drive. You can't tell it is a diesel, except in the garage at idle. Seats are hard European like, with back seat not comfortable. The console control is very hard to learn, with everything (radio, sat. radio, navigation, audio, telephone) in one unit. A pleasure to drive. The best navigation unit I have owned. Center console is functional. Big fuel tank. Initial mileage did not meet expectations, but seems to be improving.
ML 320 Review
I was skeptical with the reviews and don't listen to them. This is a luxurious SUV and fun to drive. I previously owned a Lincoln Navigator and Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. This is a much better SUV. Diesel is smooth, quiet, clean and gets 20/25 mpg. Ride is exceptional and corners like a sedan. AWD is noticable only when used, not when turning. It hauls a boat effortlessly and has great low speed get up and go. NAV/radio and Bluetooth work great. I have experienced 0 problems and it goes 550 miles between fillups. I highly recommend the ML 320 to all. A nice looking SUV and a lot of car for the money.
ML 320 CDI
Runs quietly, with power to spare. Off road capability impressive. Need to apply more aggressive tread pattern. Continentals good for street. Aluminum running boards for we short legged people as not to wear the seat edge down cost $750 installed. The chrome running rails cost more but look tacky. The higher package 3 aluminim rails were ordered.
The only car I've actually loved
Sturdy little beast. 26MPG HWY, 28-30 MPG in town.

Stay away from the ML320
I drive an older Mercedes Diesel and I have for years. I purchased this 2007 ML320 less than two years ago with just under 70,000 miles and the problems began. First, it has electrical problems and has burned out several brake lights in the two years. Then the rear hatch locking mechanism broke, over $400 to repair. Then it would not accelerate and we had it towed, there was a turbo valve issue, over $1400 to repair, then the alternator went out which required complete reprogramming of the car and was over $900. About two weeks ago just before a huge snowstorm it shredded not one but two serpentine belts. Now its in for a transmission problem. STAY AWAY these cars are junk.
As good as it gets . . .
I'm now 2.5 years into this vehicle and it's a real keeper. Typical German performance and the diesel is simply awesome. Can't understand why anyone would settle for gasoline version of this. It performs as well as most sedans and easily pulls my 4,000 lb. boat!! Moreover, 25 miles to the gallon running at over 600 miles per tank - are you kidding me? No, I'm not.
The BEST car ever!
I absolutely love my 2007 ML320CDI. Beautiful design, highly reliable, 30MPG Hwy. Stable, fun, safe, with a dealer that has been THE BEST. Get with it U.S. market and buy diesels...no smell...low noise....and terrific overall. Drives wonderfully in the mountains or on flat roads...great handling for an SUV...The ONLY problem is the darn PHONE pairing.....MB is archaic when it comes to this and it's a problem for a car of this cost...They need to get their technology package up to speed with the GM and the Japanese!.. (sorry, but true) Wonderful car with a weak spot.
I'm Impressed
I'm not easily impressed with Cars and Trucks but my 2007 ML320 CDI has greatly impressed me. The 3.2L diesel engine coupled with the 7-speed electric-shift transmission make very responsive package. On a recent 1300 mile road trip and averaged 24 MPG while driving at 75 MPH. The driver controls do take a bit of getting used to. The transmission shift lever (switch), while logical, is unconventional. Mercedes has the best ever cruise control. The Harmon Kardon sound system is great. The down side is the price of the vehicle and Ultra Low Sulfur fuel can be a bit difficult to find at times. For off-roading the standard tires will need to be replaced with something more aggressive.

Diesels are Great
I have owned this CDI for 4 months and love it. It is a great engine... plenty of smooth, quite power. I routinely get 23 MPG around town and up to 28 on the highway. The transmission shifts a little "truck like", but does a great job of slowing the vehicle without brakes. The cruise control is excellent, hardly ever downshifting. The interior is very nice. My biggest complaint is the finicky Bluetooth adapter that does not work with many cell phones. Diesel service costs will be higher.
Diesel sets this SUV apart
Selected the ML because I wanted a diesel with good mpg. To my surprise this is a great driver, probably because I ordered the air suspension handling package. This is a pricey vehicle, but has exceeded my expectations. Great on country roads and highways, which together comprise about 90 % of my driving.
Pleased with purchase!
I purchased the 2008 ML CDI with Package One last month. Pewter with Macadamia interior. I got the appearance package with i-pod connection. I am very pleased with the decision. I've owned MBs for the past 20 years, including the old diesels, and this is by far the best vehicle I've ever owned. I drove 330 miles on half a tank of fuel! Comfortable, relatively quiet, nice features. This is my first SUV, so it's taken some getting use to, especially after driving an S320. Ride is a little stiffer. But I have no regrets and would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone.
Great SUV....so far
This is my first SUV and my second MB, my wife drives an 02 SLK. I leased my ML 320 CDI in Feb. 07 and so far I have been very impressed with the quality and workmanship of this SUV. The ML320 drives and handles well for a AW drive SUV. The performance is impressive, the diesel is super quite and the MPG is good for a vehicle this size, I have been averaging 21-22 combined and 24-25 highway. I have 7000 miles on my ML and so far no problems. The only down side is the price, MB needs to start offering more options as standard equipment, ie: Bluetooth, formed mats, power and heated seats, moon roof...etc and a lower price so more people can afford it. I would highly recommend this SUV.
Best Car I have owned
This SUV is great. I have gone 10,000 miles and the fuel mileage is about 23 MPG. It is a diesel and I have had no problems finding fuel. I would recommend this versatile vehicle to anyone who is shopping for a new high end SUV.
Everything we wanted!
We ordered the vehicle in May, and got the first 2008 into the dealership! Have nav, keyless go, heated seats, and much more. Have 500 miles so far and the car is so extremely quiet I can't beleiev it is a diesel. Can't wait to take a road trip. Build quality is excellent. This is our first MB and we have owned several Bimmers. Thrilled with the decision!
First Mercedes Exceeds Expectations
Ordered this vehicle in January and did not get delivery until May. This is the only thing that disappointed about Mercedes. After almost 6 months and just over 10000 miles, I have found very few shortcomings and many pleasant surprises. The most pleasant has be fuel efficiency. Overall combined mileage is right at 27 MPG. Trips up and down the east coast this summer registered almost 30 MPG, both better than the ratings on the sticker. Solid construction, quiet operation, real luxury feel, terrific acceleration and very comfortable seats among the most pleasing characteristics. Only disappointment so far is iPod integration bug which MB has promised to fix. Highly recommended.
Expensive Problems
This was an excellent choice for the first 18 months. It has since started to self-destruct. Driving is an adventure. Our Civic just rolls along.
Happy and Proud
We bought the diesel variant of the ML for the MPG and torque ratings. We have been very happy with power and the MPG. It is a turbo diesel so I knew to expect the 1-2 second lag when hitting the gas but love the punch once the power hits. I have been lucky not to experience any reliability or odd little noise issues and am thank full for that.
The future is here and it is CDI
We took our ML320 CDI on a 4 day trip through the winter mountains of Oregon and California. The ML ate it up. Here's why: Full time 4 wheel drive with full time traction and stability control, quiet roomy interior, comfortable seats, a bright sunroof and pleasant interior decor, driving feel of a car and not a truck, and an incredible drivetrain. This very quiet diesel engine and 7-speed transmission make the ML a rocket. You never lack for power. Ever. You want to pass someone? Uphill? Press the throttle and it's done. Here's the best part. We got 27 mpg on our trip!
I love my Mercedes
Although I only purchased this vehicle one month ago I have been out on two road trips (over hill and dale) of 600 miles or more each. I have owned a number of quality vehicles over the past 35 years and SUV's in particular for the past 7 years. I have found the ML320 CDI Turbo Diesel to be far superior in every category to our 2000 Toyota 4 Runner Limited (gold edition).
Excellent choice
We ordered one with iPod connection, trailer hitch, Parktronic, running boards - no packages. The factory messed up the order the first time, the dealer did everything possible and the re-order was correct. We could not be happier after a thousand miles or so. We have a Garmin Nuvi 660 for GPS, so the navigation problems people mention do not effect us.
