Overview

Remember the first-generation Acura ZDX? Over a decade ago, it attempted to capitalize on the SUV coupe trend but struggled to find an audience. Now, the second-generation ZDX arrives, a competitive five-passenger electric crossover SUV based on General Motors engineering and technology. Acura gives the ZDX a unique design, but otherwise this EV liberally pulls parts from the GM bin, both good and bad. It shares a platform, drivetrain, and assembly location with the Cadillac Lyriq but employs downgraded interior tech and some materials that are not up to snuff for an Acura.

Edmunds spotlight: Acura ZDX vs. Cadillac Lyriq

Naturally, you're wondering why Acura partnered with GM to create the ZDX. The TL;DR is that Acura needed an EV ASAP, and GM had a technologically advanced platform on which Honda's luxury division could build one pronto. Your next question might be whether you should get the Acura or the similar Cadillac Lyriq. That's harder to answer, but the Cadillac has a lower base price, a more elegant interior, a more sophisticated digital instrumentation and infotainment system, and hands-free driving at a more accessible price point. Performance, range and recharging times are almost the same, and the Acura supplies slightly more cargo room. Mostly, your decision comes down to design: Which one do you like best?

Competitors to consider

The Acura ZDX rolls into a growing luxury EV segment. Besides the Lyriq, rivals include the BMW iX, Genesis Electrified GV70, Lexus RX 450e, Mercedes EQE SUV and Tesla Model Y. Soon, the Audi Q6 E-tron will join them to claim a piece of the pie. Fortunately for Acura, GM's EV platform is competitive, erasing a hurdle the ZDX would otherwise need to surmount. Unfortunately for Acura, the ZDX's interior looks, feels and smells like it's from Detroit.

How does the ZDX drive? We tested a ZDX Type S, which is the most powerful version you can get. It accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds at the Edmunds test track. That's certainly quick, though a few other performance versions of luxury EVs are quicker still. A BMW iX we tested sprinted to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, for example.

Our test ZDX Type S had the optional summer tires, which helped it achieve short emergency braking distances in our testing. The firmer suspension and steering of Sport mode made the most of the tires on our handling course, and there's just enough rear bias in its power delivery to almost make the ZDX fun to drive. However, the ZDX is pretty heavy and doesn't offer much feel for the road through its steering. It's a sporty-ish EV but not particularly satisfying to drive with enthusiasm.

For daily driving, the ZDX works well. It accelerates smoothly and gets up to highway speeds quickly. The regenerative braking effect when you lift off the accelerator pedal is strong but not so jarring that it's hard to drive smoothly, and the ZDX's easy steering and tight turn radius are useful in cramped parking lots.

Comfort

How comfortable is the ZDX? The ZDX Type S is comfortable as an all-day cruiser. Putting the suspension in the Normal mode is the best bet, as it delivers a smooth ride even on the crummiest of freeways. The front seats offer plenty of adjustment. They're also both heated and cooled for those cold or hot days. The climate control works quite well, keeping the cabin at the right temperature.

The ZDX is also quiet, although we were surprised to find that the related Honda Prologue was actually a little quieter in our testing. It's likely the summer tires on our test ZDX Type S were the main cause of the extra noise.

Interior

How’s the interior? The ZDX's expansive interior has plenty of room between the driver and front passenger. The wide doors make it easy to get in and out, and physical knobs and buttons for basic audio and climate control functions make the interior easy to use, even if there are quite a few functions left to the touchscreen. That touchscreen has big icons that are easy to tap, but some functions are still hard to find. The surround-view camera that's standard on the Type S is welcome since the low roofline and tight rear quarters limit visibility.

How’s the tech? The Acura ZDX comes standard with smartphone integration and many driver assist systems, while the Type S supplements these features with Hands Free Cruise. This rebranded version of General Motors' excellent Super Cruise system works on the same network of premapped highways, allowing you to take your hands off the wheel while the ZDX drives itself. It works surprisingly well, with the ZDX happily staying in its lane and giving you plenty of time to retake control when needed. The rest of the driver assist systems also work well, although the collision avoidance warning is too alarmist.

The ZDX's infotainment system has the Google built-in feature. It's helpful to see the Google Maps turn-by-turn directions on the digital instrument panel, and the Google-based voice controls that you can use for a variety of features are also useful. Unlike some of the GM vehicles with which the ZDX shares its underpinnings, Acura still includes smartphone integration so you can use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto wirelessly if you want. It also has wireless charging in a convenient pocket behind the cupholders that's actually cooled so it works without overheating your phone, even if it's in a case.

Storage

How’s the storage? The ZDX has up to 29.7 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats. That's typical for an electric luxury SUV. The cargo floor is low to the ground for easy loading, and it holds a week's worth of groceries with ease. It's also simple enough to fold down the rear seatbacks to expand the space if you need to.

Small-item storage is decent, with a nicely sized center console bin, a two-tier center console tray with generous space underneath for a purse, and good-size cupholders. For family duty, big child safety seats should fit without the front passengers compromising on space.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? Acura estimates that the ZDX Type S with summer tires, which is what we tested, should be able to go 278 miles on a full charge. On our real-world Edmunds EV Range Test, we exceeded that, stretching the range to about 313 miles. That's certainly enough for daily driving and the occasional road trip; you can expect other versions of the ZDX to be able to go even farther. Acura says the ZDX can charge at a maximum 190 kW when connected to a public fast-charging station under ideal conditions, which should be good to get the battery from 20% to 80% in a little more than 40 minutes.

Value

Is the ZDX a good value? It's hard to consider this electric Acura as a value in any meaningful way. While it drives just fine, the ZDX is let down by the midlevel interior materials. The use of so many lowball plastics inside is obvious, especially compared to the much nicer interiors on the similarly priced Genesis GV70 Electrified and Cadillac Lyriq. Sit in a ZDX and you won't really notice a difference compared to the related but far-less-expensive Honda Prologue. Considering competitors offer a more luxurious experience for the same price, we can't give the ZDX a pass here.

Wildcard

The ZDX, though it carries some novelty as Acura's first fully electric vehicle, lacks many of the qualities found in the brand's other vehicles. Even the Type S version isn't all that exciting to drive. This is a merely competent EV that's less luxurious than its nameplate and price tag suggest. There's very little here to make it memorable.

Which ZDX does Edmunds recommend?

Compared to a dual-motor ZDX A-Spec with all-wheel drive, upgrading to the ZDX Type S reduces the maximum range by 26 miles and costs $5,000 more. In exchange, you get a performance increase, an adaptive suspension, better brakes, and exclusive access to features you would rightly expect to find on any luxury performance SUV.

Acura ZDX models

The 2024 Acura ZDX is a five-passenger midsize electric crossover SUV available in A-Spec and Type S trim levels. A 102-kilowatt-hour battery is standard, providing electricity to a rear-mounted electric motor (358 horsepower, 324 lb-ft of torque) in the A-Spec. The maximum range for this version of the ZDX is 313 miles.

A dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup is available for the A-Spec (490 hp, 437 lb-ft) and offers 304 miles of range. I received my 2024 Acura ZDX A-Spec on August 6, of 2024. I love how the car looks, how it drives and handles, and the red interior is super nice and comfortable, but that’s about it. After only 17 days of owning it, the vehicle left me, my wife and 2 month old son stranded in the middle of the road after losing power on a casual drive home from dinner. Acura Ev app that was supposed to take care of remote connection to the car didn't work 100% of the time. I was getting a message "Unable to connect. Try later " Car infosystem doesn't recognize voice commands. The other party could barely hear me during all phone calls that I attempted to make. 2024 Acura ZDX First Impressions

What is the Acura ZDX?

The 2024 Acura ZDX is the brand's first electric vehicle. Now, Acura history buffs might recall that Acura first applied the ZDX moniker to a quirky coupe-style SUV that ran from 2010 to 2013. But this reborn ZDX is a more conventionally styled SUV that sets the tone for Acura's electric future. It's nearly as long as Acura's three-row MDX SUV but it has more of a wagon-like profile and seats five passengers.

As with most Acura vehicles, the new ZDX shares a mechanical lineage with a related Honda product. In this case, it's the similarly new Honda Prologue. Which, hmm, is also based on something else — the Chevrolet Blazer EV. Which is related to the electric Cadillac Lyriq. Does this matter? Not necessarily; the ZDX is a reasonably compelling luxury electric luxury SUV. But the General Motors connection does play a part, both good and bad.

What's powering the ZDX?

You can get the Acura ZDX with a single electric motor that powers the rear wheels or a dual-motor setup that has an additional motor up front, giving the ZDX all-wheel drive. Both draw power from a 102-kWh battery pack. That's part of the platform (powertrain + chassis) that Acura shares with the Cadillac Lyriq. The base ZDX A-Spec with a single motor produces 358 horsepower. A dual-motor version is also available, and it produces a more substantial 490 hp.

The more expensive ZDX Type S only comes with dual motors and cranks out 499 hp. That's awfully close to the dual-motor A-Spec's 490 horsepower, though the Type S does make substantially more torque (544 lb-ft as opposed to 324 lb-ft on the A-Spec) and it should be quicker to accelerate.

How much range does the ZDX have?

The Type S, which is only available in all-wheel drive, gets an EPA-estimated 278 miles of range when fitted with its available summer performance tires. The most economical ZDX, the rear-wheel-drive A-Spec, gets 313 miles. Overall, these range figures are on par with other midsize luxury EVs such as the Lyriq or BMW iX. We'll know more once we put the ZDX through Edmunds' independent real-world EV Range Test.

The ZDX can handle DC fast-charging power of up to 190 kW, which Acura estimates will add about 80 miles in 10 minutes.

How does the ZDX drive?

Power comes easily in the ZDX Type S, which is the only version of the electric vehicle we've driven for now. It doesn't deliver the face-melting instant torque you get on the quickest Teslas, but once its hulking body gets up to speed, it's quick. The dual-motor ZDX is about 1,600 pounds heavier than an all-wheel-drive MDX, and that extra weight is noticeable when tackling curvy roads and making sharp turns. The ZDX doesn't lack for grip, but both driver and passenger will feel the shifting weight when utilizing the SUV's sporty potential.

How comfortable is the ZDX?

Both front seats are quite comfortable and offer generous side-padding. The seat heaters turn on quickly and provide comfortable warmth, and the automatic climate control system doesn't struggle to maintain your preferred temperature. There's some hard plastic on the driver's side, toward the center console, that may prove bothersome for taller drivers when on long drives.

Legroom in the second row is ample and headroom is fine, too — only the tallest passengers are likely to feel headroom is compromised. The back seat is a bit flat, though, and only the Type S comes with heated seats.

How's the ZDX's interior?

The Type S offers some flash, including either an all-red or all-white leather interior. But otherwise the interior is nice, if a bit subdued. The dashboard has a mixture of materials that is nice to look at but not all that noteworthy. Getting in and out of the rear seats may be challenging for some passengers, as there's a bit of a lip that must be stepped over. One particularly uncoordinated passenger (uh, your reviewer) tripped stepping out of the back seat.

But the ZDX is very quiet, even on highways. Wind and traffic sounds do not seep into the cabin, which makes for a very pleasant drive when combined with the silent electric powertrain.

How's the ZDX's tech?

The ZDX is the first Acura to feature Google built-in as part of its infotainment interface. Google built-in means that a significant amount of the touchscreen interface is powered by Google. The ZDX's onboard navigation system, for example, is effectively Google Maps, just like you'd have on your phone or PC. It also includes the Google Assistant voice system and the ability to add a variety of third-party apps through the Google Store, such as Spotify. It's a pretty slick interface, and you can still use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (wireless!) if you prefer.

However, we found the ZDX's touchscreen to be a bit glitchy during our initial testing. There were moments when it ceased to respond to any inputs, which was frustrating. It's also potentially concerning because we've experienced a lot of technical glitches with Edmunds' long-term test Blazer EV. Which, as we noted above, is significant because the two EVs are related.

Thankfully the ZDX also offers many physical inputs for features like climate control and volume. You can also increase or decrease the volume using buttons that rest under your hand when holding the steering wheel.

The Type S also utilizes hands-free driving that is nearly identical in form and function to General Motors' Super Cruise. The system, which Acura calls Hands Free Cruise and is part of AcuraWatch 360+, functions on most major mapped U.S. highways and freeways. Combined with the ZDX's adaptive cruise control and lane centering systems, Hands Free Cruise allows you to take your hands off the steering wheel when activated. However, you still have to be paying attention in case a situation arises where the vehicle needs you to resume control. In our limited testing, the ZDX was able to change lanes autonomously and provided impressive hands-free capability.

How's the ZDX's storage?

The ZDX provides 28.7 cubic feet of storage behind its second row. That's the same amount you'll find in the Cadillac Lyriq but less than you'll get in the BMW iX. Small-item storage is just OK and its certainly lacking if you're looking for places to throw your keys and wallet. But the front cupholders can fit a wide water bottle and the center console is cavernous, but there's no tray so you'll most likely be dumping your keys, wallet, etc., into the abyss.

What are the ZDX's trim levels?

The Acura ZDX comes in two trims: A-Spec and Type S. The A-Spec is available in both rear- and all-wheel drive. The Type S is only available in all-wheel drive. Here's a quick rundown of the features you get with each version.

Competitors to consider

The most obvious competitor is the Cadillac Lyriq, which shares much of the hardware you'll find on the ZDX. The BMW iX is quite a bit pricier but also significantly more opulent. The Genesis Electrified GV70, while a little bit smaller, is similarly well equipped and its smooth ride may give the ZDX a run for its money.

What is the ZDX?

The 2024 Acura ZDX will be the brand's first EV. Yes, the name was first used on a quirky SUV-esque wagonoid thing, but the reborn ZDX will be a more conventionally shaped EV SUV that sets the tone for Acura's electric future. The brand just released new photos of the Type S variant undergoing development testing, and it looks, well, a lot like a camo'd-up electric SUV. There isn't much in the way of defining features, but we like the long hood, two-box shape, and strong shoulder line on this camouflaged ZDX Type S, especially in profile.

Other than the fact that it will come as a 2024 model year, Acura hasn't released anything concrete about the ZDX yet. Information like range estimates, horsepower figures and drivetrain(s) are all still under wraps. That said, we can make a few educated guesses about the forthcoming ZDX, so here is everything we know about Acura's upcoming EV.

There's a very good chance that the production version of the ZDX will be based on the 2024 Honda Prologue, an EV that shares its platform with the 2023 Chevrolet Blazer. That means a GM-supplied battery pack and EV architecture will likely be found in the floor of the production version of the ZDX. That leaves a lot of room for potential drivetrain configurations and a wide range of power outputs, too. We expect output to be in the upper 400s, and the Type S might even crest 500 horsepower, with lesser models packing closer to 300-350 horsepower.

Other educated guesses can be made about the range by looking at this car's platform mate, the Chevy Blazer. Chevy says that the upcoming Blazer EV will have anywhere from 247 to 320 miles of range on a full charge. That range figure seems to be the sweet spot these days, especially for these five-passenger crossover EVs. The Genesis GV60, a key ZDX competitor, has a maximum range of 248 miles, so if Acura can either match or exceed Genesis, it'll be putting itself on equal footing with a car that has quickly become one of our favorite EVs.

While we don't have an estimated range or a price, Acura did mention a few neat details about an eventual production version when it revealed the Precision EV concept, the concept version of the ZDX. The ZDX likely feature a raft of advanced driver assist systems. These systems don't currently feature full autonomy, but remember, Acura is looking well into the future of its cars with this concept. It might not be here soon, but it's part of its vision for the brand, and as a result Acura will do its best to future-proof the ZDX for that eventuality. It also says the ZDX will usher in a new era of sustainability for the brand, too, with responsibly sourced interior materials and paints that are less toxic, in addition to other smaller sustainability improvements.
