Mercedes-Benz has been quite busy lately expanding its lineup to include EVs, and one of the latest is the 2023 EQE. This all-new electric lozenge rides on a shortened version of the EQ platform that Mercedes-Benz debuted with the EQS. As the second E in the EQE name signifies, Mercedes sees this as an electric alternative to the midsize E-Class sedan, and it's sized accordingly. And since electric motors are compact, the EQE's wheelbase is 7.1 inches longer than the E-Class sedan's, and that extra space is used for a cavernous rear seat.

All EQEs share a 90.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Fully charged, it could be good enough to give the base EQE 350 a range of about 400 miles. The 350 is a bit underpowered for a luxury EV, however; its single electric motor on the rear axle makes 288 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. The EQE 350 4Matic adds a second motor to the front axle. Horsepower remains the same, but torque jumps to a much more substantial 564 lb-ft. The EQE 500 4Matic's two motors combine for 402 hp and 633 lb-ft. For EV buyers who are in a real hurry, the AMG EQE generates 617 hp from its two motors, which can be temporarily boosted to 677 hp and 738 lb-ft. Launch the AMG version from a stop and Mercedes says you'll get to 60 mph in a scant 3.2 seconds.

Not only does the EQE offer plenty of stretch-out space inside, but it's also trimmed as opulently as you'd expect from a brand synonymous with luxury. Rich synthetic or real leather wraps the seating surfaces and dash, and separate sharp-looking OLED panels are used for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Mercedes offers just about everything from its feature and technology catalogs in the EQE as well. Overall, we think the EQE should be a smart pick for shoppers wanting a luxurious EV sedan, particularly if it's one that's less expensive than flagship models such as the EQS, BMW i7 and Porsche Taycan.

We drove the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Performance

How does the EQE drive? We tested the EQE 350 4Matic. Acceleration is far from blazing — we recorded an unremarkable 0-60 mph sprint of 5.5 seconds at the Edmunds test track — this version of the EQE still has plenty of get-up-and-go. And on top of that, it has better handling than its comfort-tuned suspension would suggest. Around corners, the EQE feels controlled and accurate. Our test car had the optional rear steering system that enhances maneuverability.

Our experience when trying to slow down the EQE, however, was not as good. The EQE has plenty of stopping power for emergency braking. But in daily driving the brakes can feel grabby and unintuitive. There's also an odd feeling during which the brake pedal moves away from your foot during regenerative braking. This makes it difficult, even with practice, to get the sedan to stop smoothly.

Comfort

How comfortable is the EQE? The EQE has a very smooth ride. It's a great luxury sedan to rack up highway miles in. It's not as quiet as the more expensive EQS but it's very close. The front seats are superbly comfortable and have plenty of adjustments and supportive cushioning. We weren't as enamored with the rear seats, however. A flat bottom cushion and an odd seatback angle make it hard to get fully comfortable back there.

The climate control works well, except in its most Eco setting, where it barely blows cold air. It does maximize range by a few miles according to the car's range computer. But if the sun is out you won't last long in that mode unless your goal is to turn the EQE into a rolling sauna.

Interior

How’s the interior? The cabin's appearance immediately draws you in with its high-quality materials and cohesive, modern design. Unfortunately, the touchscreen interface's organization could use some improvement since some key features, like certain drive settings and audio adjustments, are hard to find. There's a deep level of customization available with this system, but getting it set up to your exact specifications will take a while.

On the upside, finding your ideal driving position is easy thanks to lots of adjustment range for the driver's seat and steering wheel. Adults can fit comfortably in both rear outboard seats and have plenty of room under the front seats to put their feet.

Technology

How’s the tech? Our test car had the standard center touchscreen display. It works well and is in some ways preferable to the full-dash Hyperscreen, which can seem a bit like technological overkill. The onboard navigation system is responsive and features high-quality graphics. Our test vehicle also came with the Burmester audio system, which is absolutely fantastic.

Voice commands triggered by the phrase "Hey Mercedes" work great. You can use natural speech to quickly perform a wide variety of tasks. We also liked our test car's advanced driver aids, such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. They worked correctly and unobtrusively to make driving easier.

Storage

How’s the storage? The EQE's trunk is large enough to fit several large bags or suitcases. It does not have a front frunk like the Tesla Model S, however. At first glance, it also doesn't look like the EQE has much interior storage. But then you pop open that cover beneath the center screen and realize that the space is pretty large. The floating console opens up a very big storage space between the front seats, which is perfect for a purse or small bag.

Range and Efficiency

How are the range and efficiency? The EQE 350 4Matic we tested blew past its EPA-estimated range of 260 miles to cover 302 miles on the Edmunds EV Range Test. It was also impressively efficient. On our range test, we measured that it used 34.4 kWh for every 100 miles driven, which is also considerably better than the EPA's estimate.

Maximum charging power for the EQE is 170 kW on a DC fast charger. That's not as strong as some other luxury EVs (the Lucid Air, for example) but it's good enough to get you going without too much waiting. Mercedes says you can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 32 minutes at an appropriate fast charger in ideal conditions.

Value

Is the EQE a good value? The EQE's tight build quality, upscale materials and luxurious cabin design live up to expectations set by Mercedes' other vehicles. However, you're not really gaining any significant range or performance benefits versus other electric sedans (both luxury and non-luxury). BMW's rival i5 is less expensive too. The EQE is a lovely vehicle to travel in and drive, but it needs to have one more trick up its sleeve to feel fully worth its price.

Warranty coverage is about standard, with four years/50,000 miles of basic and powertrain coverage. The battery does get a longer 10-year/155,000-mile warranty. There are also two years of scheduled maintenance and free 30-minute Electrify America fast-charging sessions included with every new EQE.

Wildcard

In its base 350 versions, the EQE hangs its hat on practicality rather than thrills. It's a very comfortable and smooth-riding EV but not particularly fun to drive. The styling is pretty bland too. The design emphasizes aerodynamics over aesthetics and somehow looks futuristic without being bold.

2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE trim level differences

The 2023 EQE's powertrain progression forms one pricing hierarchy, but motor output and drivetrain configuration are the only major differences separating the EQE 350, EQE 350 4Matic and EQE 500 4Matic. All three come with the same roster of standard equipment and the same 90.6-kWh battery pack. Equipment differences lie in the three trim levels — progressing from Premium to Exclusive to the Pinnacle — available with any powertrain. The AMG EQE has its own level of standard equipment. It is only offered in Exclusive and Pinnacle trims, but the equipment included in each varies slightly compared to the rest of the EQE lineup. Which EQE trim does Edmunds recommend?

The ability to execute an authoritative pass on a 55 mph two-lane seems like a necessary part of the Mercedes-Benz experience. While no EQE is slow, electric-motor punch tapers as speed builds, and the 350 models lack the stank necessary for such a dispatch. We, therefore, like the EQE 500 4Matic, and considering that it leaves buyers wanting for absolutely nothing. The Pinnacle trim's relatively minor upcharge is a no-brainer.
