This vehicle has been awsome. I have had no problems. Plenty of power. It has 78k miles and still going strong. I replaced the AC unit about 3 years ago, but other than that I have only done normal maintence to it. I hope my next vehicle is just as good.

Commander is a Cherokee wanna-be

I cannot be happier with my fun 1996 Jeep Cherokee that I bought at 126,500 miles. It is a sleek, black Sport 4Dr 4WD with gray cloth interior, OEM aluminum wheels, and Goodyear Tracker tires. The car is in fantastic condition, in terms of the engine, transmission, suspension, electronics, interior and exterior. It simply looks cool and commanding. It's as if Jeep's new Commander design team went retro and modeled their design off of the original '84 Cherokee. I'd even venture to say that the new Mustang is to the original '65 Mustang as the new Commander is to the original '84 Cherokee. It's a lot of fun driving this car. The shift-on-the-fly 4WD gets me anywhere in brutal Chicago weather.

165,000 Miles and Still Going Strong

Have owned the Jeep for 10 years and it's still fun to drive and knock down a Mustang or 2 with it's fantastic acceleration to 70MPH. (Speedo only goes up to 85MPH) Best engine that was ever put into a Jeep. Even my wife gets a kick out of it. Have only put in approx. $600 in repairs needed over the 10 years with the biggest expense being to replace the radiator with a new aluminum one with a lower pressure cap. This happened at 163,000 miles last month. Interior carrying room is also great and I remove the lower back seat and put the back down to get more room than that offered by the new SUV imitators. Wish they still made this one.

96 Cherokee 2wd 4 door 5 speed

I like this Jeep; it's got the advantages of the smaller suvs such as ground clearance, storage, passenger room, roof racks, rear wheel drive and just being up higher than small cars (plus it looks like the 4wd). Plus the advantages of a compact car -- good ride, fuel economy no extra drivetrain to weigh it down or maintain, transmission/clutch repairs are a breeze compared to its 4wd cousin (no transfer case to deal with). Overall good little suv for the budget minded person. Also the 2.5 4 cylinder is surprisingly spunky. It's not a slouch as you would think; it's no 4.0 liter but more power means less fuel economy. This day and age I'd rather have the torquey 4 banger! it does the job quite well.

Great performing small SUV

I bought my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport new. It is still running great. I have only had general maintenance and no major repairs. It is perfect for me to haul around my 5 dogs. The only complaints I have are 1. the cup holder was poorly placed when designed. It broke off twice and I replaced it once. At $12 a pop I decided to do without. 2.The radio died after 5 years and the replacement I got is nowhere near as simple to use. 3. I wish they had allowed for a little more leg room. Overall, this Jeep has been very good and reliable transportation and I will probably drive it another 10-12 years.
