I like the XJ12, but...
I bought the 1994 XJ12 (XJ81) because this was the only year it came in the XJ40 body style. The car seems heavy compared to the excellent XJ6 (XJ40), but the 6.0L V-12 delivers much more torque. Still, a poor trade off and the fuel consumption is hard to take. If you're a Jag guy, the car disappoints a little. If you're not a Jag guy stay far away - it will eat you out of house and home.
Unbelievable value
Our 1994 xj6 is one of the finest cars I've ever driven. The ride is better than any other car I've ever been in. It's a pleasure just to be in it. But what amazes me is the very low cost of these cars - its inexplicable. They suffer from a poor reputation for reliability, but our car has been extremely reliable, and I think the reputation is undesrved for the 92 on models.

Nice Car but repair cost one arm!
Nice Car but repair cost one arm!. Bought used in 2012 for only few thousand.I know already i have lots to do on this car.Exactly invested $8,500 for put the car as original spec's,complete electric, suspension, and few cosmetic things. Now with 140,000 kilos for a 20 years old car.Car is almost new in and out.But electric system on this car is really one of is bad side.Parking light specially. But still 20 years old model shape he still one good eyes catcher today by public.
GOOD PRICE GOOD CAR
I bought this car last October. I had to change the oil pump, it was expensive. Not only was repair very expensive the local Jag dealer had it for 2 months because they really didn't know how to deal with this car. But to the dealerships credit I have not had a problem since the repair. My only advice is if you buy this car--remember its a keeper --not for future trade ( much less value than when you purchase it)
My Second Jag
This is an awesome looking car and has a superior ride. The air conditioner blower motor went out and Jaguar is the only place I could find to have it replaced. It cost a whopping $1600.00 to repair. Other than that I love the car. Hve you ever got away from the Jag service department for under $1000.00? I haven't!
nice all around
Pretty, great ride, great value for the money. You can easily get a VERY nice low mileage 94 XJ6 for under $7,000, so why buy a newer, but uninteresting Ford or Saturn when you can have a fun, reliable Jag for less price. Yes, parts and service cost more, but not a lot more. I've had 4 Jags now and the drivetrain systems are usually strong and reliable. With these cars it's typically the electrics or some nit-picky thing that goes bad. Keep it garaged and maintained, buy the latest model you can afford (build quality and reliability for the sedan is best from 1990 and up), and it should return the favor. 1994 was the last year for the more angular, European styling, a personal favorite.
xj12 -- Automotive royalty for pennies
What unbelievalbe value!! Fairly reliable. Only mechanical problems are just hoses on 7 year old car. Maintenance is expensive for the V12 but the thril of driving one is undescribalble. It is the feeling of always knowing there is power to spare. The car rarley down shifts. Fuel economy is about 14-16 mpg. Now the good stuff: Luxourous interior comparable to Bently or Rolls Royce Superb ride quality & sound system.
Thrilling Car
In the 10 years I have owned this car I have had no repairs at all. A battery, two front shocks, and a set of tires are all I have put into it. It has not been to a dealer at all in ten years. It is garaged and I use it almost exclusively with top down, which is frequent here in Florida. I have thought about a new one, but this style is too outstanding!
Love it... caution for electronic pbms
I love it, like my wife! However, both give me problems at times. As is known, this Series 40 is better than the previous Series III (which is better looking) but still has issues, especially later in life. Mine have included flaky security system and locks, which act up in wet weather. Particularly troubling is failure of right turn signals, which required replacement of the computer $500 used, plus labor) and not the other side isn't working. The soft leather wears in the front seats, particularly at the edge where the seat belt rubs the seat. Acceleration and handling can't be beat in a car anything like this size. It's still a good value to spend some money maintaining this classic.
Awsome car
This is the best car i've ever purchased. I've had it for nearly ten years and never had any major problems with it. Jaguar dealership always very helpful with everything. I highly recommend this vehicle, or any Jaguar to anyone who is looking for a reliable car.
If it weren't for the little things
Have had this car for about four years. Bought from friend with 15,000 miles on it. I love the car...I have always been a british automobile fan...and it turns heads. Live in East Tennessee and it takes the mountain and back roads well...a little soft compared to the SAAB Turbo I had before this but more comfortable. But the stupid little things that break like door handles and power motors are annoying, And it is a very expensive car to maintain. Example...the door handles have heat sensors to keep the locks from freezing which makes them almost $600 to replace. However the engine and powertrain have been problem free...go figure!
Purrrfect Blackat
My Blackat was purchased new in 1994.I only drive stick and this purchase required a special order and a 4 month wait.It was well worth it.As someone who generally turns over new cars every 3-4 years, this car was different. I've had the Blackat for 9 years and I can't bear to part with her. I still get a thrill everytime I look at her. Her beauty is beyond any other car I have ever driven. The Blackat is sporty and elegant at the same time.Truly a rare find and a real classic. One that will never go out of style. My sympathy to anyone who has never had the pleasure of driving one. You've missed out on one of life's greatest sources of enjoyment.
Mr greene
having owned jag's before , i am amazed by its reliability. although parts are very expensive they are seldom replaced. no horrors like $1000 inboard brake jobs. one major problem--the heater/a/c blowers. they almost always go and dealer parts and labor run $2500--jag has provided no help with this. if you can get by the a/c [max always works]--- this is one of the first good ford influeced years. a reliable jag- very disconcerting!
Reliable, and Built like a tank
If you're looking for a safe, quality, comfortable vehicle this is it. Overall mine has been quite reliable with only a few wiring problems covered by warranty. The drive on it is amazing and very smooth. I was rear ended going on a highway, two other cars were smashed to pancakes mine had a bent bumper. The car is solid and it overall a good vehicle.
Love It
I bought this car with 75,000 miles on the odometer and in nearly 4 years have put 31,000 miles on (now at 106,000). The ride is excellent, handling very predictable, power adequate, and reliability has been excellent. I have replaced the shocks, tires, battery, and brake pads - regular maintenance stuff. I have done nearly all the work myself and have been very impressed with the engineering. I have had the A/C compressor and expansion valve replaced by an independent service garage.
One awesome cat!!
This cat is a beauty!! The lines of the car are timeless, attracting attention wherever it goes. The design of the new generation convertible Jaguars can't hold a candle to these classic coach made works of art. Mechanically the car is pretty sound, but problems with the interior electrical & lighting has been frustrating. I can overlook that setback in the daytime, but at night when you need lighting to enter and egress the car it can be frustrating.
My First Cool Car
The people at work used to make fun of my 1990 Volvo station wagon which ultimately died last summer. My pal Phil was moving to London, and I bought his Jag from him. It is the (almost) perfect midlife crisis car. The drive is great, and the looks really wow people. A sort of negative is that people will assume you spent an enormous amount of money for te car.
Fun XJ12
This car is a true classic high performance luxury sedan. It is very graceful on winding mountain roads and a real joy to drive and own.

My retirement toy
Great car, loads of fun to drive. Gets a lot of looks and positive comments. Great two person car, back seat is only good for storage or packages. This is a great touring car, very comfortable and easy to drive. I’ve been to a few car shows and enjoy talking to other car people. I’ve had the Jag about 8 years now and still enjoy driving. I am still getting a lot of positive comments on the car.

XJ12
Nice, solid car. Yes, it's had some minor service issues. After the waranty ran out(get the extended warranty!), I got sick of going to the dealer and getting raped, so I do all the little maintenance items myself now, including oil changes. Little niggling problems aside, a great car.
'93 XJS Convertible 5 speed
This is the most fun I've had since high school. I love the 5 speed, the lines are beautiful, no mechanical problems. My third Jag.
Wonderful classic British motoring
I have always owned Jaguars, and my '94 Vanden Plas (FYI, the "s" is silent)has been one of the best. I've been to Coventry (U.K.) a few times, and what's amazing is that no one has any clue how many man hours go into each Jaguar. The leather and woodwork is still prepared by hand (woodwork alone takes 6 weeks to prepare!). The only time I have to bring my car to the dealer, is for oil changes. What's interesting is that there's so much history behind each Jaguar model. (Try looking up Vanden Plas coachbuilders, you'll be impressed). If your looking for a classic British motorcar with a gorgeous interior and impecable ride, buy a Vanden Plas.
UNRELIABLE
I recently purchased the 1994 XJ6 3 months ago and already I have had to spend ever $5,000 to fix mechanical problems. Wood trim is cheap and cracks easily.
Car is smart, it fixes itself!!! No joke.
Bought this car 2 months ago and my gosh, it is just awesome. My wife loves it, my kids, I even get stopped on street asking about it. It had one issue 3 weeks into owning it and it was the front fan didn't go off and drained battery. After mechanic told me to take off negative on battery in back until he could look at it, it stopped staying on after 10 days. My Jag, fixed herself. Sick. Everyone laughed at me for buying a 1993 g including my Brit friend, but now he is even a believer. He wants my car, no way! It gets 22 on highway and 18 city. Best car I ever bought!
Its a Jaguar; that says it all.
I've restored a classic 50's car, owned a couple of 60's muscle cars, owned a couple later model performance cars, plus several Japanese cars, but this Jaguar was the most fun to own and drive and it by far attracted the most attention. The repair costs are slightly higher because I always used Jaguar authorized technicians, but it was well worth it. It is a little expensive to insure if you have teenagers on your policy. Unbelieveable mid-range torque and acceleration. This used to be my everyday car, but I bought an SUV and this is now my "pleasure vehicle" as the insurance company calls it, and that actually is a good adjective for this car.
Excellent
This Car has a smooth Drive train, with the Rear-wheel-Drive. The 210 horsepower give this car an awesome acceleration. If your looking for a fun car for spring or summer this is it.
Powerful, comfortable, reliable
I bought this for my wife and we are both very pleased. The Jaguar has an excellent ride, more than enough power, and is made almost entirely of steel. We have an '87 SeriesIII Jaguar and that is why we stayed with the line. Parts are easily obtained off the web or otherwise. In my opinion, an excellent value for the very low prices available as used cars.
money pit
Our 1994 jag was purchased from a dealer with only 34,000 miles. It was still warranted until February 2000. From day 1 we had heating/ac problems and could not get resolved until two replacements of evaporator unit. Rear end was replaced at 43,000. Overall we had $9,500 repair in 21,000 miles. Looks great but performed miserably. Also Jaguar North America really did not care to help on issues. Very disappointed.. we sold for $9,250 and bought a new Avalon with 7 year extended warranty... not going through jaguar nightmare again..
1994 Vanden Plas XJ6
This is my first Jaguar and so far I'm quite impressed. The ride is smooth and the low seating position makes one feel as though one is riding in a sports car. Very fun to drive lots of get up and go. My previous auto was a 300sd so I'm easily impressed. My mercedes mechanic was a little upset when I told him I purchased this car warning me of costs in repairs that would make the angels weep... But my mercedes wasnt exactly cheap so with my extended warranty of 3yrs or 45k I feel it certainly can't be any worse than the 500 bucks a pop to have the mbz serviced. I'll take my chances thank- you very much
XJS 4.0 94
Fun and pleasure. But expensive taxes and fuel in Belgium
A great nightmare
I have owned this car for 2 and a half years, in the winter it has bad acceleration and the accelerator would stick, but it handled very well on ice and snow covered roads. In the summer its a blast, the acceleration is smooth and fast, and having the windows down is enjoyable. But there's many problems, got it at 86,000 and now it has 106,000 miles. Replaced fuel pump twice, has had many times the car wouldnt start due to the battery or random reasons that fixed themselves. Also. the rear end is going on me just a bad experience
Proven Over the Years
I was skeptical when I purchased this car as a Select Edition, but it has been reliable, fun, and absolutely beautiful to this day.
Some misgivings
Bought the car late winter this yr. Car was idle about 5 yrs. So problems were expected. So far I have repaired the AC blower motor - 1.29 part, hell to get installed. Rebuilt R/Pinion and tie rod ends, new battery, new tires, front brake rotors and pads, new roof. Had problems with electrical relays but fixed with no parts. Now the front drivers seat will not recline (bad motor) - this car is becoming a quest
Unbelievable XJ6 3.2L Jag
I have had this '94 XJ6 3.2l sedan about 6 years now and still cannot get over how well the car drives, plenty of power and an incredible ride. The ride is unbelievable and you should try to take a ride in one to see for yourself. I have had bugger-all mechanical or electrical issues (other than normal consumables) so can only recommend this series car from my point of view. Reading some of the other reviews you can see the same theme coming through regarding the comfort and driveability of the beast so all I can do here it to agree with those who have the same feeling as I have. All in all, I cannot think of another car with this sort of build and running reviews particularly in regards to the price nowadays so exceptional value for money. Rolf
