I purchased the 2012 Elantra Feb. 2013 as a birthday gift to myself. I must say I have no complaints other than the car not coming with a spare tire (that is just lame and cheap), what am i supposed to do with a air pump?! And the steering quality on rough or damaged roads (can't have it all). Also I just received a recall notice because of the side airbags, but I am happy that the company was able to communicate this safety error.

Decent looking. Acceleration non-existent. Suspension very below average. Handling also very below average. Went from driving a Lexus IS350 to the Hyundai Elantra. Extremely disappointing all the way around. Bought a week ago from dealership. The more I drive it the more I regret buying it. Acceleration of a Prius without near the fuel efficiency. On the "Pros" of the vehicle- very good air conditioning. Other than that, nothing good to say about it.
Have owned this car for 1 year...My opinion

Overall, I am very pleased with this car. Just a quick breakdown: -Road noise is loud but not bad (to me at least) -I have gotten 28/38 MPG, after subtracting 2 from the reading it gives. I have changed my driving habits tremendously. -Owners now receive an MPG reimbursement card. After 11,000 miles, I was given $46 and can continue to get reimbursed when I visit the dealership.
Nice styling and yes you can get the advertised MPGs

I have the GLS with Preferred package (auto trans, a/c, bluetooth, steering wheel controls, etc.). I chose the Elantra after also driving the Cruze, Focus and Mazda 3. I have 1,200 miles on it. Regarding mileage: I see some with the 2011 model (same vehicle) saying they don't get the stated 29/40 mileage. I would guess that they didn't follow the break in period instructions in the manual - for the first 500 miles drive at a variety of RPMs between 2-4,000 RPM as much as you can. If you have the auto transmission you can do this with the shiftronic mode. After break in, I can get over 42 mpg at 75 mph with the a/c on. The 29 mpg in city is tougher but can be done.

I don't usually write reviews, but after seeing all the reviews reporting poor gas mileage I felt like I had to say something. I've got about 10K miles on my 2012 elantra. Just about a month ago I drove from Cleveland to Ann Arbor (~180 miles) and I averaged 41 mpg. That's with speeds between 65-75 mph. When I first got the car I could get 29-30 in a city. However, I've recently found it more fun to drive this stick shift car in a less-than-optimal way. I now average about 26-27 in the city but get to enjoy the car a little more. So getting at or above the estimated mpg is very possible. In addition, there is plenty of room in the interior of the car.
