Overview
There was a time when luxury and affordability were mutually exclusive terms, but in the 1990s that all changed when Japanese carmakers spun off their own upmarket sub-brands. South Korean manufacturer Hyundai followed a few decades later with Genesis and has been making a strong impression since. The 2025 Genesis GV70 is the company's small SUV, bookended by the smaller all-electric GV60 and larger midsize GV80. As with Hyundai, Genesis makes its mark with value, delivering a lot of features at a more attainable price while maintaining a very high level of quality.

Edmunds spotlight: Comfort is a top attribute
You can't go wrong with either of the Genesis GV70's engine choices as both the four-cylinder and six-cylinder deliver plenty of power that will easily satisfy the vast majority of drivers. Unlike some of its European competition, the GV70's suspension is tuned to favor comfort and compliance more than handling performance. As a result, it's more composed over rough pavement for a more serene in-cabin experience. It's not as athletic as some of its rivals, but we contend this isn't as important for most luxury SUV shoppers. Check out our Expert Rating below to see why the GV70 rises to the top.
Competitors to consider
The Genesis GV70 is our favorite small luxury SUV for a number of reasons. You'll save a few thousand compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLC or BMW X3, but that's meaningless if the quality and performance aren't there. To the GV70's credit, you likely won't be wanting for more athleticism, and the interior is most certainly up to luxury SUV standards. If performance is a priority, you'll have to spend a whole lot more for the higher-end Benzes, BMWs or the Porsche Macan.

Rated for you by America's best test team.Performance
8/10
How does the GV70 drive? The GV70's enjoyable driving experience starts with its smooth and robust powertrain. The turbocharged V6, which is what we tested, provides easy and accessible power from just about anywhere in its rpm range. In our testing, the GV70 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds. The automatic transmission delivers smooth shifts when you're just tooling around, but it can also crank up the aggression with crisp, positive shifts when the roads get fun.
Around turns, the GV70 isn't as sporty as a Porsche Macan, but it responds intuitively and predictably to your inputs. Braking is predictable too, with a natural-feeling pedal stroke that makes it easy to stop smoothly. All in all, it is a quick and smooth SUV but not the athlete that some others are.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the GV70? Comfort is a big part of what makes the GV70 a great SUV. The front seats are highly adjustable, and our test vehicle's seats also had heating, ventilation and a massaging feature. The rear seat cushions are also pretty comfy and offer a generous amount of recline. An adaptive suspension (standard with the V6) adjusts itself based on the road conditions ahead. The ride isn't quite as plush as in the larger Genesis GV80, but it strikes a commendable balance between comfort and compliance.
The climate control has a dedicated touchscreen that's easy to use. The seat heating and cooling are nearly unmatched for their intensity, and the heated steering wheel was equally as impressive. A quiet cabin rounds out the luxury experience with dual-pane windows keeping a lot of the wind and ambient noise at bay. There was only some low-level road noise on particularly textured surfaces.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? The GV70 has a slightly different interior design than other recent Genesis models and is better for it. The infotainment control knob, in particular, is much easier to use than the GV80's. The dial rotates and moves and even features a touch-sensitive surface, all of which can be used to navigate the menus. On the downside, it's easy to mistake the dial for the gear selector, which is also a dial. The touchscreen is also located a bit too far away from the driver, so you might find yourself stretching to press it.
The GV70's cabin is among the more spacious-feeling in the small luxury class. The extra-wide door openings make it easy to get in and out. We love the driving position and appreciate that Genesis makes all the main controls easily accessible for the driver. And despite the GV70's rakish body, it's actually quite easy to see out of.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The GV70 comes with a healthy amount of modern tech. For starters, advanced driving aids including adaptive cruise, lane keeping assistance and collision prevention are all standard. The available 16-speaker Lexicon audio system is certainly worth getting to if you are an audiophile.
There are plenty of power options for keeping devices juiced up, including four USB outlets, a wireless phone charger and an available household-style outlet. The GV70's voice controls can understand a decent amount of natural speech but can only perform functions related to the navigation system, audio system and phone.

Storage
8/10
How’s the storage? Rear cargo space is very generous at 28.9 cubic feet, which is right up there with the class-leading RDX and Jaguar F-Pace. The loading area is wide, allowing for easy loading of larger things. The rear seats can be folded flat from the cargo area, so there's no need to walk around to the rear doors. Genesis' smart trunk opens automatically based on your proximity.
Storage space within the cabin isn't super generous, but it's adequate. The center armrest bin is a decent size, and we love how the tandem cupholders stay out of the way of the driver controls. The wireless charger is deep and out of the way, so you can charge a phone on it and have another one plugged in resting on top of it in that open cubby. The door pockets are a little small and the glovebox is modest, but ultimately there are enough options.
Got kids? The spacious back seat makes it easy to install child safety seats. The anchors and top tethers are easy to access. Towing, however, is limited to just 3,500 pounds, which is well shy of class leaders.

Fuel Economy
7/10
How’s the fuel economy? The GV70, which is what we tested, with the V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined. That's decent, though some competitors are slightly more efficient thanks to integration of a mild hybrid system. We ran the GV70 on our real-world evaluation route, and it returned an average of 20.2 mpg in heavier than usual traffic. Despite the traffic, we have a feeling that hitting the EPA estimate will be a challenge if you don't drive with efficiency in mind.
Value
8.5/10
Is the GV70 a good value? The GV70 is definitely a value leader when it comes to features, build quality and price in the small luxury SUV segment. While the interior may not quite reach the same level of finish as a Mercedes-Benz or Audi, it certainly isn't far behind. And the areas we think that are lacking — slightly tacky-looking carbon-fiber trim and touchscreen iconography that looks too similar to a Hyundai or Kia product — are pretty minor.
Then when you bring Genesis' warranty into the equation, it leaps even further ahead. The five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties aren't close to being matched by anyone in this segment. Roadside assistance is good for five years/unlimited miles, which is a year better than most rivals. And Genesis provides free maintenance for three years/36,000 miles.

Wildcard
8.5/10
The Genesis GV70 is a striking SUV that catches more attention than most in its class. And it's not just the outside. The interior is a fresh and thoughtful design that looks and feels luxurious. The GV70 mostly backs up its looks with a driving experience that's sporty enough to have fun on a backroad.
Which GV70 does Edmunds recommend?
Starting with engine choices, we suggest sticking with the base 2.5T model as it produces more than enough power for most drivers and you'll end up saving yourself more than $12,000 off the top. For a more representative luxury experience, we also recommend the Advanced trim level to get genuine leather upholstery and a raft of additional safety and driver assist features.

2024 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I have a 2024 GV70 and took it on a long cross country trip and was impressed by the driving quality and handling. However there are several issues that concern me. At 3000 miles the brakes were very loud backing up. The dealer told me that it needed new brake calipers. At 10,000 miles the transfer case started leaking. I have owned at least a dozen new cars and never had issues … like this occur so early. My last was a Accura RDX. At 48,000 miles no issues. I should have researched the the GV70 more before purchasing. The dealer is waiting for ordered parts and their service has been great. I think they are a bit embarrassed with the cars problems

2024 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Bought a brand new 2024 Genesis GV70 Sport Prestige. Only had it for about 4 hours before having to bring it back to the dealership. I went out to dinner with my family and about an hour or so afterwards, I started the car just to see a bunch of flashing warning lights on my dashboard and a message saying that the cameras were without any signal. Basically, all of the electronic features … had somehow malfunctioned. The navigation system had no signal. The radio did not work. My blinkers didn’t even flash on the dashboard. Upon getting in contact with a sales representative, we were told that we would have to wait until Monday and that there was nothing that could be done because it was the weekend. We had to drive it back to the dealership while the car system was in failure. Couldn’t even see what speed I was driving at because of the malfunction on the dashboard. It was pretty heartbreaking driving off of the lot in a beautiful, brand new car only to find it malfunctioning just a couple of hours later. We were told that it may be an issue with the battery, but after researching it seems like more of a wiring issue. I have never heard of anything like this happening from any other high quality, luxury brands. I don’t think Genesis will keep my business, to be honest. For a $60,000 car, there’s no way that this should be happening. It’s almost as if the manufacturers are not performing system checks before authorizing these vehicles for sale. It appears that reliability may be somewhat of an issue with this brand. Please beware of this manufacturer. As a first time customer, this is extremely disappointing. This was such a let down. Not sure that I can trust this brand. Looks like we got a brand new $60,000 lemon.
The Different Premium SUV
4 out of 5 starsAdrian Pineda, 01/25/2024
2024 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I give it a four star because I don't believe there's the perfect car. Every vehicle is perfectible and this is an example of that. First with the negatives that make me give this precious SUV only 4 stars:
The seats: They are rock hard! Not a deal breaker but be cognizant that the seats are super firm. They are highly configurable and that helps tremendously as well as the massage … feature for the driver but, firm they are.
On the Prestige Package they come with a mesh insert that pretty much covers 50 percent of the seating surfaces so, yes, you upgrade to leather only to get half of the seating surface covered in fabric. I always opt for leather or vinyl seats because they're easier to upkeep than fabric and they are easier to keep clean as well. So I'd say, keep this in mind if you have small children and or pets.
Now with the positive: EVERYTHING ELSE. I loved the buying experience. I was hesitant to set foot at the Genesis dealership for all the bad rep that I see online but my experience was very comparable to what I've dealt with with Lexus.
I love the interior quality, fit and finish. I also love most of the features that I actually use on a daily basis. I love the looks, the paint finish (metallic black). The vehicle is quiet and the ride is super comfortable despite the firmer seats and bigger wheels. The 2.5 offers plenty of power and you save at the pump too vs the 6 cylinder.
I also love: the fact that it has distinctive looks vs the X3 or the GLC300. The long warranty, the free maintenance for 3 years and the valet service.
Keep this vehicle on your list of premium SUV's. It made sense to us and we are loving it 3 weeks and 3000 miles into our ownership. Yes, 3000 miles in 3 weeks. We just drove it from California to Texas and back.

2025 Genesis GV70 2.5T 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
We've never owned a luxury vehicle of any kind so we really wanted to treat ourselves with this purchase. Because this would be our most expensive vehicle purchase by far, we compared and tested many 5-seat luxury SUVs. All had some good points but the GV70 checked more boxes than any of the others.
We've now owned our 2025 2.5T Sport Prestige for close to a month and absolutely love … the performance, the drive quality, the quiet cabin, the excellent audio system and the luxurious appointments. We're in the Sierra Nevada foothills so we've taken several drives "up the hill" on winding mountain roads and 26% grades, in elevations from 2000 to 10,000 feet, and temperatures up to 110°. The GV70 has handled everything we've thrown at it with competence and poise. There have been no issues whatsoever - we've enjoyed every minute we've spent in the Genesis.
Are there any downsides? Well, the GV70 does feel rather heavy on tight mountain turns. A BMW X3 would handle the twisties with a little more balance, but at the expense of ride quality. An Audi Q5 would return better fuel mileage. A Lexus NX350 may be more reliable over time. But every one of these compact SUVs cost more than the GV70 Sport Prestige when comparably equipped, and they don't do as many things as well as the GV.
No car is perfect so the GV70 won't get 5 stars from me but 4.7 stars? ABSOLUTELY!
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2025 Genesis GV70, so we've included reviews for other years of the GV70 since its last redesign.
